Heartless - Chapter 27:The Forest's Anger
It was red as far as they eye could see, different shades of red of course.
It was a dream, a dream of a couple, a couple that shouldn’t have loved. The woman was rich and the man, middle-class. This was a match that the world would’ve rebelled against. For the laws of the rich, this was unacceptable, one of the greatest sin that you could ever act out.
And yet nothing can stop the love birds from letting their hearts run into the sunset, young and free. Every night, whenever possible, the woman would sneak out to meet her loved one. Regardless of the danger and the consequences that she might face, she still had that silly grin that stretched to her eyes. And so too, did the man, even knowing that what he was doing was only short termed happiness.
There, under the stars, they talked about all the little things they could. From the weather to the goals they dreamed of. Sometimes, they’d let the silence talk for them when there was nothing else to say.
I watched the couple, like a deity high above. Only watching, never interfering but knowing what would happen next. It would end in tears of course.
But before all the worst could happen….
a sense of warmth enveloped me and it all vanished into darkness and I sank into the first deep sleep I’ve had since the moment I’ve become a Keeper.

I stared at her sleeping figure, it was rather surprising at how fast she could fall asleep. Her silver hair glistened in the artificial light, and she didn’t even remove the glasses she was wearing to go to sleep. The temples of the glasses were sticking out of her ear, showing that if she kept doing that, it wouldn’t take long for it to deform. It didn’t help that her face was buried in her arms.
But unlike most people, whose face would relax the moment they slept, hers kept the stern look she had. It was like she wasn’t truly sleeping, merly closing her eyes, but her deep even breathing refuted that idea.
Perhaps she was lucid dreaming, perhaps it was the price she paid in becoming what she was now. I have encountered a few raceless in the life I’ve led, each that paid a price in becoming what they were now. In fact, many were still paying that price.
I sighed, walking towards her. As much as I would like to remove her glasses, wouldn’t that be awkward if she woke up?
In the end, I rummaged through the cabinets before finding the blanket I brought with me. It should be known that I myself liked to take a few naps wherever I went, but that was usually after school. It’s not like I was in a hurry to go home, there wasn’t really anything to return to after all.
I chuckled, perhaps I was one of the reasons why the younger students used to think that teachers lived in the school. But the custodians usually kick me out at some point in time.
I gently placed the blanket over her shoulder before I continued to plan for the afternoon class. She really was an odd teacher, in fact she wasn’t much of a teacher now, was she? She was a teacher that improvised on the spot, the sort that I didn’t think existed until now.
She truly was an odd one.
