Help…My Wife is a Spy - Chapter 400
“Me?” Hummingbird asked in surprise.
“Yes, have you forgotten the knowledge we transferred you. I have faith in you,” Halia replied.
Hummingbird’s heart raced. Although she had the knowledge, she had never actually defused a bomb before. Could she really do it?
She walked over to the bed with hesitation and bent down to look under it. Immediately, she recognized the components under the bed and knew it was a simple bomb to defuse. However, she only had 4 minutes left and Amun had deliberately added a heap of extra wires to confuse her, so she wasn’t sure if she could find the right wire in time.
She knew if she ran away with the other agents at that very moment, they could still escape the radius of the explosion with no injuries, but there were still innocent people in that base, including children that had no idea about the bomb, so she agreed that defusing the bomb was the best option.
“I’ll give it a try, but I want the other agents to leave. If I can’t do it, I don’t want them to die with me,” she said.
Wolf, Sasquatch, and Orca looked at each other and had the same thought. They couldn’t abandon Hummingbird on her own at a time like that. They were a team; they went in as a team, and they were leaving as a team. If they were scared of dying, they wouldn’t have chosen the career path that they did.
Wolf walked over to Hummingbird and said, “I know you’re used to being on your own and not having to worry about others, but you are not alone anymore. We are a team and we have faith in you. You can do it. We will walk out of this together.”
Amun looked at the four in disbelief. “Are you guys crazy?!” he yelled. If they weren’t leaving, then he wasn’t leaving either. Was he about to die in this place?
The agents ignored him as Hummingbird smiled thankfully at her colleagues. Their trust gave her the confidence that she needed. She lay down and slid under the bed to get a closer look at the bomb. She then stretched out her hands and started examining each wire calmly.
“It’s faster for you to run. Do you want to die here? Is it worth it?” Amun said as he stood up and tried to persuade the other agents.
“Sit back down,” Orca growled as she threw a kick at the man’s stomach.
Amun glared at the woman and his eyes glanced at something momentarily.
Sasquatch noticed this strange movement and looked at the direction that the man had glanced at.
He could sense that the man was planning something, but he couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
Lotus knew this man too well. Every little movement triggered Lotus’ memories and made Sasquatch feel suspicious. No wonder Amun tried to kill her. She really did know too much.
Meanwhile, under the bed, Hummingbird was holding three wires in one hand: one red, one yellow, and one black. A drop of sweat rolled down her forehead as she followed these wires to see where they were attached. It had to be one of these three; she simply had to cut the right one and the bomb would be defused. But, which was the right one? She glanced at the time: two and a half minutes left. She had to focus.
Halia watched anxiously from the other side as Hummingbird ran her hands up and down each wire. Finally, she grabbed a knife from her belt and placed it up to the yellow wire. The room was silent at that moment. All Halia could hear was the young woman’s deep breaths, and all Hummingbird could hear was the sound of her own heart thumping in her chest.
Two minutes.
Hummingbird’s hands trembled as she hesitated.
Not too far away, Wolf whispered, “You can do it!”
A tear rolled out of Hummingbird’s right eye. She had never been responsible for so many lives before and it terrified her. She hesitated, “I can’t. You guys should hurry and leave.”
Amun’s eyes opened wide in fear when he heard this. He couldn’t die there, he still had a lot to live for.
“Screw you all! I’m not dying here!” he yelled.
Without a second thought, he jumped up and ran over to a rug on the floor. Before the agents could react, he quickly rolled it up to reveal a metal door in the floor.
When Sasquatch saw the door, he immediately realized what was happening. Of course! This man was much too selfish and narcissistic to sacrifice himself, so he definitely had an escape plan when he installed the bomb. This was his escape!
Amun pressed his thumb against a screen on the door to unlock it, and with a beep, the door unlocked. He quickly threw it open and tried to climb inside. It appeared to be an underground bunker of some sort. But, before he managed to escape, Sasquatch grabbed onto his arm and stopped him.
“Where do you think you’re going?” he asked.
One minute.
Hummingbird pressed her knife against the yellow wire again. She was running out of time. She closed her eyes and got ready to cut it. It was now or never.
But, right at that very moment, a deep, calm, and confident male voice suddenly said into her earpiece, “Cut the black one. The yellow one is fake.”
Halia looked at Jackson in surprise. He had been watching the footage and noticed the mistake.
Hummingbird opened her eyes in surprise and quickly looked at the black wire again. He was right. The yellow one was a distraction from the real one.
With half a minute left on the timer, she held her breath and grabbed the black wire…
Shup! She sliced through it in one clean movement. This time, there was no hesitation.
Everyone stopped breathing and the room fell silent.
Halia looked at Jackson, the BTA agents looked at each other, and Hummingbird looked at the timer on the bomb.
Six seconds…
The timer had stopped on six seconds…
She had successfully defused her first bomb…
