How to Thrive in the ’60s - CH 67
Chapter 67 – Whether Liu Mei lived well or not, it only took a few words from Su Yu (2)
After class, Su Yu made a secret appointment with Chen Qiuxiang to go to the charcoal stove factory to get the charcoal burner that weekend.
It was already the end of September, and the weather was getting cold. The charcoal stove would be put to use as soon as she brought it home. With it, she could boil a pot of water at any time. In winter, she could bake sweet potatoes and peanuts to eat. So wonderful.
Su Yu told Su Xiaozhi about this on the way, but she only told him part of the truth. She told him that her classmate was giving this to her for free.
“Sis, why is your classmate so nice?” Su Xiaozhi asked in surprise.
He knew that his family had been wanting to get a charcoal stove for a while, but they couldn’t afford one. Sis exchanged their family’s industrial tickets to buy shoes and clothes for them, especially since Su Lin loved beauty. The industrial tickets were used up each month, and there were never enough industrial tickets to buy a charcoal stove. And even if they had the tickets, they wouldn’t be able to get such a good thing without connections. The demand for them was too high in the provincial capital, plus there was the demand from other provinces. The supply of charcoal stoves from the charcoal stove factory wasn’t enough.
Su Yu nonchalantly said, “It depends on the recipient. She doesn’t give it to anyone else. She knows what kind of person I am. Don’t tell anyone about this. We’ll go get this later by ourselves.” The charcoal stove was very heavy. She needed a porter to fetch it.
Su Xiaozhi was extremely proud. See, Sis was close to him. She told him everything.
Su Yu naturally didn’t think that way. She didn’t have a preference on who she told this. She just wanted someone to carry the charcoal stove. If Su Dazhi came with her today, she would have said the same words to him.
—
The charcoal stove matter was a brief interlude. For Su Yu, the most important thing was to submit her article. So that night, after getting home, Su Yu polished up her article again.
Liu Mei snuck over to take a look. Seeing her sister-in-law’s good handwriting, she gaped. She usually saw her sister-in-law reading books and thought she was only good at that. It was surprising to find out that her handwriting was also good. Her image of Su Yu abruptly changed a bit from someone that only knew how to do housework and kept her head down to a wise person.
“What are you looking at? Don’t you see that Sis is writing?” Seeing that Liu Mei was peeking, Su Lin said with pursed lips.
Su Dazhi was soaking his feet. He glared at Liu Mei. “What are you doing? Don’t bother Sis.”
“Enough, we’re a family. Treat each other equally.” Su Yu looked up and smiled at the depressed Liu Mei. “Little Mei has been performing well lately. It’s time to accept her. Since she’s a member of our family, she deserves our concern and care. Remember, towards our enemies, we have to strike as hard as a storm!”
Liu Mei shivered. And then she heard Su Yu softening her tone, “But towards our family, we should be like a gentle breeze and drizzle to them, leaving them feeling comfortable and nourished.”
Liu Mei: “…”
The Su siblings: “…”
Su Yu frowned. “Remember what I said. I admitted Little Mei into our family, so she’s our family.”
“Got it, Sis,” Su Xiaozhi and Su Lin reluctantly agreed.
Su Dazhi didn’t say anything. He was different from his siblings. Liu Mei had hurt his heart. He couldn’t easily forgive her.
Liu Mei bit her lip and looked at Su Yu. She felt a bit teary and couldn’t help but feel moved. Sister-in-law… she was actually quite good. Before she quarreled to separate the family, Sister-in-law had treated her very well.
Su Yu smiled in satisfaction at everyone’s behavior and went back to checking her article.
She didn’t care that much about what they were thinking. Regardless of Liu Mei’s thoughts, her recent performance was satisfactory. Thus, she felt it was time to let Liu Mei feel the warmth of family and let her know that she could only live comfortably under her protection. Whether Liu Mei lived well or not, it only took a few words from Su Yu.
