Hunter x Hunter – To Adventure - Chapter 1 Yuuki
Yuuki regretted her life. She had never left her box and simply stayed in the comfort zone that others provided her with, never trying very hard with anything. Sports, academics, music, art. She didn’t really work on any of them. Of course, she regretted this now as she lay in a bed in a sterilised room, hanging onto her life thanks to tubes. Yet those regrets were nothing compared to what she felt in her heart right now. She was only still alive due to a charity feeling sorry for her and paying her hospital bills. Nobody cared about her, she heard no screams of worry, nobody begged to come see her. Just the constant beeping of the machines.
Yuuki had been in the hospital for six weeks now. She was going to die. She had long since accepted that. Yet not one of her ‘friends’ had come to see her. Tears began to trickle down her cheeks. What was she expecting? They weren’t really her friends, were they? They were just people she hung out with so she wouldn’t be alone at lunch. Yuuki couldn’t even remember having a personal conversation with even one of them.
She knew nothing about them. They knew nothing about her.
As she had been alone in life with no hobbies or friends, Yuuki had immersed herself in other worlds. Anime, manga, books, films, everything. Her immense knowledge of these worlds is all she has achieved in her mere fourteen years of life.
So this is how she would die. Alone. Ha, pretty fitting.
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
Please God, to be honest, I never really believed in you but if you are real and can hear me, would you mind putting me somewhere nice in my next life. Somewhere less boring, filled with adventure. Surrounded by people who love me. Ok, maybe surrounded is a bit too much. Just one person then. Yuuki thought.
Ha, why was she even doing this? Even if God was real, why would he listen to her? She stared up at the white ceiling and bright lights. Tears now blurring her vision. I’m pretty stupid, aren’t I? Hey God. I know I said I was ok with dying but would you mind letting me live a bit longer? You see I did a pretty stupid thing. I haven’t been anywhere in over a year. It made me feel really sad. How they could go through so much trouble to protect something. I would really like to see one of my precious worlds just once more. I would really like that. Yuuki thought.
She let out a small smile as the tears now flowed heavily down her cheeks. That would be really nice.
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beeeeeeep. Silence.
Darkness. Was she finally gone? Finally free? That was nice.
“You are quite pathetic you know that?” A quiet, soft voice spoke. The voice was gentle and seemed to lull her into a trance.
She tried to open her eyes before realising they were already wide open. Yet she could not see a thing. Yuuki was confused, was this death?
“You’re not as pathetic as others, though.” The voice continued, “Many die younger than you, and live in much worse places. However, I do feel some pity for you. Somewhere filled with adventure, right? Ok then.”
The darkness around her slowly began to transform into light.
“Look, our little girl just opened her eyes honey!” A male voice spoke out.
“Really?” A tired female voice asked, “That’s good. Very good.”
A different female spoke out next, “So, have you two decided what you would like to call her?”
Yuuki looked down at her now chubby little hands confused. What had happened? Was she reborn? She looked up at the woman holding her.
“Yes!” The woman spoke confidently, “Her name is Yuuki!”
Yuuki looked up at the woman who was now her mother. She saw the obvious fatigue in her face but that only made her more beautiful in Yuuki’s eyes. My mother, huh? Yuuki thought, and tears began to fall from her eyes.
“Ah!” The woman yelped in surprise, “Honey, she’s crying! Did I do something wrong? Maybe I held her wrong? Did I hurt her? I knew it, I’m going to be a horrible mother!” She began to cry too.
The man looked in confusion at his wife and new daughter crying and sighed.
