I Became The Mother Of The Male Lead’s Children - Chapter 48
Chapter 48
Although each maid was assigned different duties, there were families who requested a maid who could perform multiple roles at the same time.
“You may say whatever comes to your mind first.”
At Daisy’s words, Vanessa snuck a look at Sera again. When Sera nodded furtively, Vanessa clenched her fists and answered.
“Fixing bed, shaking dust off blankets, sweeping and wiping the floor, and feeding wood to keep the furnace burning. Dust the frame frequently, sometimes take it down and wipe thoroughly.”
Vanessa gave a decent answer after a long time pondering and smiled. She added positively.
“You also have to organize the furniture well.”
Unlike the satisfied Vanessa, Daisy calmly rested her chin on her hand and recited.
“Let’s talk about it in detail. All the items in the mansion should be carefully managed, but the time, focus, and supplies used to manage it definitely vary.”
“Yes, that’s right. I agree with you.”
As opposed to Vanessa’s bright countenance, Daisy’s composed voice spread ominously.
“Then I’ll ask you about frames that you commonly see in a mansion. How do you determine the frame’s quality?”
“Excuse me? The frame’s quality?”
Daisy blinked once, an action that seemingly expressed that she wouldn’t say it twice.
Vanessa’s eyes fluttered violently and her face paled. An awkward and heavy silence settled down.
Vanessa had no idea what to answer and stuttered.
“Ah, um, so…the frame quality…comes from the design.”
“Design? How do you differentiate the design?”
“It’s not exactly the design, I mean, the decorative edges are quite…different.”
“You’re right. But how is it different?”
Daisy did not erase the smile from her face, but that smile didn’t lighten the atmosphere at all. The stifling and tight air lingered.
Sera, who had been watching them so far, gathered her eyebrows in the middle.
“Madam, I think the child was nervous because of the prolonged interview.”
Sera carefully grabbed the end of the document Daisy was holding. The document contained Vanessa’s assessment on which Daisy wrote during the interview.
“The next student is waiting, why don’t we stop here and call her? Please take a look at Vanessa. She’s sweating. In fact, she said she wasn’t feeling well this morning, so it was amazing that she could endure for this long.”
“That’s already a given to do that.”
Her tone contained an icy calm. Her cold gaze bore into Sera and Vannesa and made them shudder.
She finished her speech promptly.
“It doesn’t make sense that an excellent student doesn’t even know the frame quality.”
“That! Of course! Vanessa, you may leave now.”
When Sera waved her hand in a hurry, Vanessa winced and scurried away through the door.
Sera leaned toward Daisy when the door closed.
“Madam, it’s about the next student you’ll be interviewing–”
“She must be waiting. Tell her to come in.”
Daisy cut off Sera’s words with a deep smile.
“She can’t get sick suddenly or coincidentally, right?”
“Ah, yes, Madam. That won’t happen.”
A student who was said to have had excellent performance soon entered the room with a bright look.
Looking at the child who was clueless as to what was coming her way, Sera wore a grim expression as if she was devastated.
With that, Sera had voluntarily revealed that the report card was false.
***
After the second interview, Sera seemed to be at a loss as to what to do.
So far, she had stomped her feet anxiously and even raised her voice to win Daisy’s favor.
There was no mention of the report card, perhaps because Daisy could read her anxiety.
Rather, Daisy calmly took notes as she listened to the student’s poor answer.
“This is the last. You said this student is not ready yet.”
“Oh, yes. But we’ll never know, Madam. Natalie’s condition may be noticeably good today. We never know what’s going on with people, you see.”
“But you said it yourself, didn’t you? If someone has a condition, it reflects their skill and ability.”
Sera clenched her teeth. She wished to bury herself in the past.
Now, even her amiable smile had become awkward.
“If both of the people you picked do not show their abilities today, and the one who isn’t ready is far better than the others, then I suppose there were no conditions, skills and abilities in the first place.”
Tuk, tuk.
Daisy knocked the table with her quill pen and raised the corner of her mouth. She turned her body at the sound of the door opening.
The end of the words that left unsaid was more threatening than anything for Sera.
“Hello, I’m Natalie Winspran.”
She was a child with a straight posture. That was the first impression she gave. Her hair was tied high in a bun, and she wore her clothes neatly.
Even though it was a sudden interview, she was the most prepared of all of them.
At the beginning of the interview, it was mostly about personal details. After that, Daisy asked a question that the other students failed to answer so far.
“Front door reception. It was the butler’s role to greet the guests and lead them to the parlor.”
“Yes, Madam. That’s what I know as well.”
“What do you think is important other than their work ability?”
There was a moment of silence.
‘No. You can’t!’
Sitting next to Daisy, Sera clenched her hem hard with a trembling fist.
She looked at Natalie as if shouting with her eyes, but Natalie didn’t even spare a glance at Sera.
“Ahem.”
Natalie gave a small cough and began to answer with a clear voice.
“The servant and butler are responsible for welcoming and attending the aristocrats, so they must always maintain a calm attitude. But I think the most important thing is their outer appearance.”
Natalie paused for a while and continued to talk.
“Footman and butler must exceed 5.6 feet, preferably exceed 5.8 feet. Their skin must have no blemishes, and they have large eyes, a tall nose, and outstanding appearance in general. Although it’s not very common, the same applies for the parlor-maid. It is preferable not to exceed 5.3 feet tall and should be attractive.”
Daisy, who always held onto the document during the interview, put it down for the first time. She even put down the quill pen.
Looking straight at Natalie, Daisy asked in a gentle voice.
“Do you think it’s unfair?”
Natalie bit her lip and slowly responded.
“…Originally, a maid’s job was to keep the mansion clean without any sound or trace as much as possible. They should finish their work as if a fairy had descended and gone.”
Natalie’s voice trembled while she was talking, but it didn’t look as bad. Even so, her attempt to rack her brain and eloquently deliver her answer was quite admirable.
“When we have guests, we have to work harder than other days. Because the two worlds are different.”
Natalie exhaled a small breath. Her fingers trembled, but her voice gradually calmed down.
The girl with a face full of freckles, someone who did not fit the standard of ‘beauty’ of the noble world, said.
“Being between such different worlds, the visuals must be proportionate. For aristocrats, seeing something fancy and beautiful is always an important part of their daily lives.”
She continued.
“Nobles wear makeup and heavy clothes every day. They should be sensitive to trends and pay attention to all their actions and speech. They are required to be on stage at all times whereas I, as a maid, can hide in the shadows.”
Finally, Daisy looked truly satisfied. She found Natalie to be very attractive. Even though she was young, she was able to discern precisely the dual aspects of the noble world.
If the report card had not been manipulated, she would definitely be on the list.
“I think the same goes for servants, butlers, and parlor maids. Although the requirements are different, these jobs require the same effort. Basically, you must pay attention to your diet and refine your appearance every day.”
Natalie was no longer trembling. Rather, she regained her confidence little by little.
“Therefore, I have to say that I agree with that point.”
Listening to her refined answer, Daisy couldn’t help but smile.
Daisy was satisfied with her answer. Instead of saying how it was unfair, she simply acknowledged the uncomfortable reality and faced it.
These boring interviews were getting more and more interesting.
“Alright. Now I’m going to ask you a detailed question about your abilities.”
At the edge of her line of vision, Daisy could see Sera bite at her lips anxiously.
How ridiculous.
Daisy covered the documents with her hand and deliberately spoke.
“This question was not answered by the two students before you because they weren’t in good condition.”
As Daisy continued, Natalie’s face gradually brightened.
“But why do I have faith that you can give me an answer?”
“Yes! Madam Daisy! Leave it to me!”
Natalie’s eyes shone more brightly. The tension and anxiety she showed earlier were totally gone.
Information given through the letters exchanged by the servants from different families become more credible.
There was score manipulation and corruption in the Maid School.
“How do you know the quality of a frame?”
“Inexpensive frames are coated with golden bronze powder. And as cheap as it is, it has a relatively common wave design. The foliage constantly has a heart or kidney shape. Oh, and the gold lacquer is partially done.”
“Oh! Madam. Natalie doesn’t know that. Didn’t you see the report? I’m sure Vanessa, who went out first, told her that. I’m sure.”
