I Deserve A Second Chance - Chapter 280
“Give way! Come on, people, give way!”
Fan jie pushed aside some of the people that were crowding Shao Yan’s desk. Upon hearing that she had returned to work and with snacks in a tow, some people had been coming and going to grab the local delicacies that Shao Yan had brought back with her.
“How was Singapore, Xiao Yan?” Fan jie finally reached her side, and started to sweep through the mountain of snacks in front of her.
“En, it’s fun,” Shao Yan kept typing away on her laptop. She had been catching up on emails that had filled her inbox for the past two weeks.
“Other than the humidity, the city is actually fun to travel around,” She glanced to her side to look at Fan jie, “If you get the chance to visit, you should give it a try.”
Fan jie found a Pandan flavor soft sponge cake, her eyes were still scanning through the options in front of her, but with one hand, she waved while sighing, “Aih! If only I have enough vacation days to burn. I spent all my vacation days going for the Korea trip already!”
Shao Yan shook her head helplessly, “Next year, then,” She paused and then with her chin pointed to a direction, she continued, “Try the coconut crackers; the one in the green box, it’s really good.”
Fan jie saw the box that she mentioned and grabbed one packet from it, “Yeah, the kids were talking about this one just now. How about the pineapple cake? Any good?”
Shao Yan nodded, “They are very soft, just as good as the one from Taiwan.”
Fan jie took some of the pineapple cake as well, before she glanced at Shao Yan to say thank you.
But before her words left her lips, her eyes went around in surprise, and she forgot all of the words that she was about to say.
———-
“Whoa!! Miss Shao Yan! What is this?!” Fan jie exclaimed so loud, gathering all the attention of the people who were sitting around Shao Yan.
“You’re engaged?!”
And everyone who was initially surprised by Fan jie and was about to scold her, all jumped on their seat and started to crowd Shao Yan at her desk again.
“Wow, is it really?”
“Miss Shao, is it true?”
“Let me see! Let me see!”
“Oh no! My heart is breaking now. All the pretty women are taken away.”
“Project Manager Shao, come! Show off your ring to us!”
“Show it! Show it!”
And the whole crowd went wild.
“Calm down, people!” Fan jie shouted all of a sudden, “I am the one who noticed it first. So, I will be the first one to see her ring!”
She extended her palm to Shao Yan, “Xiao Yan, come! Let me see!” And then she flashed her grin.
Shao Yan knew that she could not escape Fan jie anymore, so she obediently placed her hand on her palm.
“WOW! Holy! Look at this stone!” Fan jie was so pleased, she lost any words to say, “My eyes are going blind now! Daniel Li did a very good job, huh!”
Fan jie returned her hand but used her index finger to poke Shao Yan on her shoulders, “You’re very lucky, eh, Yan Yan!”
Other girls who were standing next to her also teased Shao Yan to no end. Each of them took the turn to look at the ring on her fingers. And everyone had the same pleased expressions.
———-
“So, when is the big day, Miss Shao?”
Shao Yan glanced to the other side, answering the question from the junior team member who suddenly chimed in.
“We don’t know yet, we are thinking maybe spring next year.”
Fan jie who was talking to the other girls, suddenly added in, “What? One year from now? Why did it take so long? Just apply for the certificate now, and get it official first then!”
Shao Yan gave a small smile, “Well, actually, that was the plan. To get the certificate first, and then plan the reception slowly.”
She ended her words with a shrug, “But, to be honest, we have not even planned anything. So, I don’t have anything to share right now.”
“Miss Shao, don’t forget to invite us to drink your celebration wine! I will make sure to give you a thick red packet!”
Everyone started to talk about the wedding reception and also the ring.
Shao Yan glanced at the corner of her laptop. She softly sighed.
Her plan to catch up on emails would have to be postponed to tomorrow, then.
———-
“Congratulations!”
“Thank you,” Shao Yan clasped her purse on her hands. She was walking next to Risa and they were about to get into the elevator to go down for lunch.
“The news about you getting engaged is traveling so fast. It seems that people were betting that the both of you would not even make it this far.”
Shao Yan turned her head slowly; her eyes went round in shock, “But why?”
Risa shrugged while raising one hand to press the close button, “Some people are just jealous, I guess.” She glanced back at Shao Yan, “Don’t mind the ignorant birds that are tweeting around you.”
“En,” Shao Yan nodded, “Oh! That’s right, I will have to let Grandma know about this news.”
Risa responded with a soft chuckle, “You don’t have to. Grandma already knew about this.”
“Huh? You told her right away?”
“Not really,” Risa paused in suspense. And Shao Yan was still waiting patiently.
“Okay? And then? How did she know?”
Risa peeked at her from under her long eyelashes.
“During the New Year lunch, remember how Daniel’s parents arrived earlier than the two of you?”
Shao Yan nodded, “Yeah. What’s wrong with that?”
“Well,” Risa drawled, “Remember how the two of you came over for dinner the night before?
Shao Yan nodded again.
“When you were in the kitchen, apparently, Daniel had asked Grandma about proposing marriage to you. And then, he sent his parents to formally ask the elderly again for her permission to marry you.”
Shao Yan gasped in surprise. She would have never thought Li Xiqing would follow the tradition to this level.
With a small voice, Shao Yan hesitated to ask, “And … Grandma agreed right away?”
Risa burst in laughs, “Yes, Grandma actually agreed right away. Don’t you remember, Grandma actually drank a few glasses of wine that night?”
“And also how everyone was laughing joyfully during lunch time the next day?” Risa ended her words with her elbow jabbed Shao Yan on her arm gently.
Shao Yan gave her a blank look as she tried to remember the New Year’s lunch.
“Well,” She scratched her head in confusion, “I actually thought it was because of Mandy’s pregnancy announcement.”
Risa added in quickly, “It’s a double celebration. Your marriage, and Mandy’s pregnancy. Grandma and Mrs. Li could not stop talking about it for a few days.”
And just right when the elevator door opened, Risa added, “I think they may have planned your whole wedding reception, along with choosing names for all your future babies!”
Before Shao Yan could respond to her teasing, Risa quickly stepped out of the elevator to flee.
“Sis! Don’t talk nonsense! What babies!”
Shao Yan shouted at her as she chased her steps to follow behind Risa.
