I Refuse To Be A Character In A Novel - Chapter 0 – Prologue
Author – Cherry_Blossom
Jonas Argentine,
My dearest child was to grow into a splendid man, a strong knight and filial son.
Knowing that made me proud, but at the same time I was overcome by sadness.
Because I had no place in his future.
I was supposed to die when he was 8.

Erna Tersia Heissentein,
My life was perfect.
Wealth, beauty and a perfect family with a strong background.
I had it all.
Until the day when I woke up in a foreign world with no one by my side.
I didn’t know how or why I ended up there.
Charlotte.
A name that wasn’t mine, in a body that didn’t belong to me.
Luckily, I could still recall some of her memories.
Berlin was a place in a world different to mine.
Much more advanced and liberal, opportunities I could never dream of were placed before my eyes.
But, Charlotte had a lonely life.
She had no family to welcome her or friends to rely on.
Being in a strange world with no one to hold on to, struck me with fear.
At times, I even doubted my mental stability.
‘Perhaps this is reality and Erna was just a dream.’
‘A dream I had made in order to escape such loneliness.’
As time passed, I learned to leave my doubts behind and gradually made a life for myself.
For a while, it was all going well.
Yet with no warning, after 8 long years, I somehow returned once again to my original world.
How happy I should’ve been.
But reality was always different.
Rather than waking up in the same 16 years old body I had left, I found myself as a grown up, married woman and a mother.
What had me most shocked was realizing that the life that I was proud of and longed for was depicted as a character in a novel that was written by Charlotte.
A mere side character who died before the story even began.
After her death, both her son and husband continued with their lives as if Erna had never existed.
Zachary remarried shortly after his wife died, and Jonas grew up well to be the youngest commander of the Kerdian knights.
No one longed or thought of her.
There was no more mention of Erna in that novel.
I felt suffocated knowing that I was only meant to be a disposable character, set to add some backstory to the second male lead.
But I had no intention of doing so.
In order to avoid the same outcome, I decided to change the plot.

“I want a divorce.”
“… What?”
The answer came late.
Zachary’s hand that held her chin flinched, but his voice sounded dull.
He didn’t take her seriously.
To divorce him meant to sever ties between the two families.
The Marquis would lose his support, and his sister, the queen whose position was backed by the duke, would falter.
That’s how political marriages worked.
And Erna had a son.
Zachary had personally witnessed how much she cared for their son during the last few months.
To divorce her husband meant that she would have to leave Jonas, who was heir to the Argentine Dukedom.
But his wife wasn’t selfish enough to ignore these facts.
Or so he thought.
“Let’s divorce.”
