I, The Dragon Overlord - Chapter 587: Holy Maiden
“Ia Ia Cthulhu fhtagn!”
“Ia Ia Cthulhu fhtagn!”
“……”
“Stop fucking shouting!!”
Even as they tried to get away, the intense chanting of the Deep Ones still echoed in their heads. It felt like these weird chants were calling some scary monsters and driving them crazy. It was as if this eerie sound was following them wherever they ran, making them super angry.
But even though they were mad, they kept running. Nobody dared to look behind them.
Even without looking, they knew that a really creepy monster called the Shoggoth was chasing them because every now and then, they’d hear its super weird laugh from behind.
While they were running away, some older experts got too tired and became food for the Shoggoth. But right now, nobody could feel sad for them because everyone else was still in danger.
Only the well-trained soldiers and some young scholars were able to keep running. The soldiers didn’t fight the monster because regular weapons didn’t work on it. Just being brave wasn’t enough to beat the monster.
Being brave is great and all, but when you’re up against something way stronger, bravery doesn’t help much.
Gui Bin was lucky he was young and had been working out because otherwise, he would have fallen behind during this tough run.
“If I make it out of this alive,” he thought, “I’m definitely going to start exercising.”
He set up a flag in his mind.
“There is an exit in front. It’s the exit of the spaceship!”
As Gui Bin teetered on the brink of exhaustion, the hoarse shout of the major up ahead pierced the air, injecting a surge of energy into everyone. It pushed them beyond their human limits, and it was this breakthrough that the fear of death had triggered.
Indeed, just as the major had foretold, a brilliant light emerged in the distance. Judging by the appearance of the opening, it was likely torn open by the pursuing Shoggoth. However, this presented an opportunity for escape.
It was akin to a long-distance race; sustaining an all-out effort for an extended period was challenging for humans. But by focusing on reaching smaller milestones, they harnessed their unwavering determination.
After the group managed to flee the ancient alien ship, they returned to the city of Atlantis. To their astonishment, the contingent of soldiers who had opted to return to the Antarctic research station had also arrived. They looked equally worse for wear, and their numbers had dwindled even further.
“What happened?”
When the major saw this group of people, his heart just tightened. He quickly grabbed a random person and shouted.
“There… there’s a monster! When we were preparing to go back, we encountered a monster!! It was extremely disgusting! And.. and it ate many of us!”
One of the members of that squad’s face was twisted and shouted in fear.
“Rumble rumble—”
At that moment, the noise of the mountain collapsing behind them caught their attention, and a deformed creature emerged from the landslide. The individual who had previously responded to the major’s statement had their pupils contract and, upon witnessing the creature crawling out of the mountain, exclaimed, “That’s it, that’s it! It’s the monster that attacked us!”
His words made the major and the others all feel a chill in their hearts. Wouldn’t this mean that there wasn’t just one Shoggoth, but there were many of them?!
“Quick, everyone keep running! We must tell the people on the ground about the situation here. There are extremely terrifying monsters under the Antarctic continent. If we let these monsters out of the Antarctic continent, the human race will face great danger. Also, those deep ones are probably plotting something here. In any case, let’s hurry and run!”
There was no need for the major to say more. The group was already using every last ounce of their strength to sprint forward. They knew that after reaching the city of Atlantis, the exit they had used to enter was not far away. If luck was on their side, they might actually make it out. At this moment, they had no choice but to give it their all in their desperate run because anyone who lagged behind would ultimately become the monster’s prey.
The Shoggoth continued to chase the crowd. Its twisted body slapped the buildings of the city, smashing this beautiful city into pieces. No one knew or saw that the huge icicle in the city’s temple was cracking. A lone rune appeared on the icicle, and the flaming giant’s eye sockets moved a little bit.
……
“Quick, faster! Load all the valuable instruments. We are retreating!”
The United Nations Antarctic Research Station had just been established over a month ago, and today was possibly its end.
Numerous soldiers were running around. Trailers were moving away swiftly, transporting the most valuable instruments in the research base to the heavy transport planes to carry them out first.
No one knew what had happened, but everyone understood that something big was happening, something that was extremely horrifying and dangerous. Otherwise, there was no reason for them to evacuate quickly.
Only a few high-ranking personnel at the base were aware of the famous Cthulhu mythology, which told of the arrival of the most infamous ancient ruler, who was now crossing the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, this ancient ruler’s movement resembled that of underwater creatures, slowly making its way towards them. This provided them with the time needed to react and evacuate.
“What about those who are deep under the Antarctic continent? Should we give up on them?”
During the process of evacuation, several leaders were also having a short meeting.
“We can’t give up on them. We had established this scientific research station for a long time without anything happening to us, but after the expedition team entered the underground, the evil gods suddenly set their sights on this place.”
“I suspect that the reason the evil god known as Cthulhu is coming towards Antarctica is likely related to what lies beneath the Antarctic surface. This is crucial information, and we can only learn about what’s underground in Antarctica and what’s happening there by meeting those explorers who have ventured deep below.”
Another senior said decisively.
“Then let the logisticians who are there stay here. Let them wait for the return of the underground explorers. Those logisticians and explorers have military personnel who can fly planes. Let’s leave them an airplane in the base for back up!”
The high-ranking officer paused for a moment and continued, “This might be a suicidal order, but we must wait until the underground expedition returns!”
“Good, just go ahead and do it!”
The research station quickly devised a strategy to evacuate from Antarctica using various means of transportation. Meanwhile, governments around the world were closely monitoring the situation in the Pacific, watching for the rumored arrival of the ancient evil god near the southernmost uninhabited continent.
In Vatican City, Pope Francis hurriedly went to the Basilica of St. John Lateran to search for the holy maiden who had been bestowed with the gift of resurrection by Christ and granted the powers of an angel.
