166 Preparation
Upon seeing these comments, Sun Hu’s mind was blown away. He thought, ‘Are these people joking? Isn’t filming this variety show a form of work as well? Did only Tian Mei need to work, and need a manager, while everyone else was free to lounge? Look at my two talents—Jing Mo and Xia Xin—they were so obedient and understanding. Ah, when I compare them to others, it just makes me want to scream in frustration.’
If Xia Xin knew what Sun Hu was thinking, she’d undoubtedly burst out laughing. Describing Jing Mo as “obedient” was rather peculiar.
“If you can’t fit this into your schedule, then drop out of the filming,” the director said, not keen on wasting more words on Tian Mei.
‘The show was about to start, and she had the gall to say she wanted to bring an assistant for work? Isn’t that a slap in my face? The theme of the show leaned towards survival on a deserted island. Under such conditions, I needed artists who were physically fit and knowledgeable about wilderness survival, not a fragile damsel like Tian Mei.’ the director thought.
Tian Mei’s expression stiffened considerably. She hurriedly clarified, “No, no, no, I can make it work. It’s just a small matter. I’ll sort it out with my assistant. It won’t affect the filming.”
“Now that the teams have already been formed. You all have the afternoon to prepare. Remember, the crew won’t be giving any help. You will have to survive on the island with what you bring,” the director declared. “Also, it’s a small island in the sea. After the car ride, you’ll be spending the night on a boat.”
Thus, after an hour or two of filming, another break was called. The artists were instructed to be at the filming location by 4:00 in the afternoon. The crew would transport the teams to the island afterward. After pausing the filming, Sun Hu took the pair back to his home.
“When I got the notice, I prepared all these for you. See if it’s enough,” Sun Hu said, his brow furrowed.
Sun Hu had prepared the items based on a wilderness survival standard, something he had only seen in videos and never really understood. The abrupt change in program format had thrown off his plans. He was tempted to take both his talents and leave. But the show’s theme was about communicating with animals and connecting with nature. Opting out of such minor inconveniences would disappoint their fans.
Xia Xin approached to inspect the baggage Sun Hu had prepared—11 daytime outfits, 11 sets of pajamas, some cosmetics, skincare products, mosquito repellent, and other things like fishing lines for wilderness survival.
“We don’t need this many clothes, and we certainly don’t need a suitcase,” Xia Xin said.
“I get that we don’t need all these clothes, but what about the suitcase? How do we carry all this?” Sun Hu questioned.
“I didn’t say we wouldn’t need something to carry our things. I said we wouldn’t need a suitcase,” Xia Xin explained earnestly. “We don’t know the situation on the island; it could be uninhabited. A suitcase would be too cumbersome. A backpack would be much more convenient.
“We should only bring three sets of clothes—one for sleeping and two for daytime. Also, a windbreaker, mosquito repellent, and the survival gear. Additionally, we’ll need solar lights, a foldable tent, and a water bag,” Xia Xin detailed, removing unnecessary items and making room in the baggage.
Sun Hu watched Xia Xin reorganize and said, “Even if we switch to backpacks, doesn’t this all seem too little? We’ll at least have room for another backpack’s worth of stuff.”
Since Xia Xin and Jing Mo were on the same team, they could fit Xia Xin’s list of essentials in one backpack, leaving another one empty.
“Didn’t you hear the director’s rule? We need to assist animals. We can bring some animal food, medicine, and bandages. The second backpack should be about full with these,” Xia Xin advised.
“What about sunscreen and food for you two?” Sun Hu asked.
Xia Xin pondered for a moment and said, “Not necessary. This is akin to surviving on a deserted island. We can bring a bit of non-perishable food. Once we get a lay of the land, we can find resources there.”
