I’d Give Up The World For You - Chapter 230
Doubting Rukelion’s sincerity was difficult considering both his words and how often he gazed at Daisy as if she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. But she had to wonder if it was solely because he was so happy to see her alive again.
She had always been insecure about her looks. Her boring eye and hair colors. Her forgettable features. Her height.
She was a lot bigger than Veronica had been. If nothing else, he would have had to get used to how that felt. He probably was at this point but getting used to something and liking it were two very different things.
“You really don’t mind that I’m not as feminine or dainty? I’m almost as tall as you,” Daisy pointed out.
Rukelion shrugged. “The better to steal your hoodies with.”
A laugh escaped her. He did do that a lot. Hoodies and oversized sweaters or t-shirts. That was almost enough to convince her but not quite.
“You’re really okay with this? I want you to be honest.”
His eyes softened as he reached out to caress her cheek with an indulgent sigh. “Daisy, I would have been okay with anything. I was that happy to have you back. But you ARE beautiful even if you don’t see it.
“I love everything about you—the real you—from the hair color you hate to your dimple to the way your hand fits in mine. You have the most stunning smile and the way your eyes crinkle like they want to join in on the fun makes my heart skip a beat every time.
“I don’t know how long it will take to convince you but I’ll do it even if it takes the rest of our lives. So yes, I am more than okay with this. Honestly. Stop worrying about unnecessary things, will you?”
Daisy was bright pink both from his words and the way he was looking at her. He meant it. He really meant it!
“O-okay,” she stammered.
With a satisfied smile, Rukelion briefly kissed her lips before letting go of her and going to call in sick. She glanced at the clock and realized she should do that too so they could go to the courthouse and fill out the necessary paperwork as soon as it opened.
Was this a bit impulsive? Perhaps. But she didn’t care.
Daisy hadn’t chosen her husband the first time she got married. She hadn’t been in love with him then and had felt like she had no other choice if she wanted to stay with the only person she cared about.
After finding out all of the horrible things he did and still wanted to do she had never entertained leaving him because she loved him and had nowhere else to go. She had been confused, hurt, and incredibly frustrated but she still intended to stick their marriage out to the end.
This time she did have a choice. She was choosing the man she loved who chose her over his revenge and was working hard to move on with his life.
Finally, after so many years, she was truly being put first. He definitely needed to work on prioritizing his own health, safety, and happiness too and have goals for his future that were outside of hers but he would get there. For now it was enough that he cared more about what was ahead of him than what was behind him.
Daisy put on thick winter tights, a purple floral dress, and a white cardigan over it. It wasn’t the fanciest thing she owned but it should be enough to get her married. Wedding dresses weren’t required for courthouse weddings and she had already done a traditional wedding once. All she needed now was a marriage certificate proving that her husband was hers in this world as well.
Rukelion wore a pair of slacks with a white shirt and once he saw what she was wearing he put on a tie in the same shade of purple, making her laugh. Matching ties with a woman’s outfit was such a couple-y thing to do here. He had been paying attention.
She also did her hair and makeup with more care than usual since they would surely get someone to take a picture of them once they were married. Once that was done she took his hand and pulled him out the door without bothering to eat breakfast. They could eat later; this was much more important.
They arrived at the courthouse right after it opened so it didn’t take long to get the marriage license paperwork done but it took a while to find someone to marry them without a prior appointment. Her leg bounced impatiently as they sat there and after a while he set his hand on her knee and looked at her with a soft smile.
Daisy immediately stopped her bouncing. Rukelion had been waiting for this much longer than she had and he was holding himself together. She ought to follow his example.
Now that she knew who he was, she was certain he had set himself on fire the other day. Did that happen a lot? That must be why he was always digging his nails into himself. So it wouldn’t happen when he was stressed or upset.
Losing her must have taken a real toll on him. He didn’t used to have that problem.
He had been very good at hiding his fire magic because he knew if anyone found out about it he would be killed. He had been spiraling ever since his fight with the king of Mirea and losing her and dealing with Juliet at the same time must have been the final straw.
Poor thing. That shouldn’t be as much of an issue now that he had her back fully, right? She didn’t want to have to worry about her apartment catching on fire at random.
Daisy laid her hand on top of his and squeezed it. No matter what happened from here on out they would deal with it together. They were a proper team now that there weren’t any secrets left between them.
After what seemed like years they were called back to be married and handed over their paperwork. The judge looked over it before proceeding with the ceremony. It was rather short but as they stood across from each other holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes she felt far happier and less conflicted than she had at their last wedding.
They both wanted this. Their feelings weren’t uneven anymore.
She was choosing Rukelion Blaze despite knowing everything about him that he had ever tried to hide. He was putting his past behind him after all this time and that was all she could ask for.
When the judge got to the ’til death do you part’ portion of the vows Daisy thought with a sense of great irony that even that wouldn’t be enough to keep Rukelion away from her. He had already found a way to follow her once.
She had no doubt he would do it again if she happened to leave this world before he did. That was how much he loved her.
When they were pronounced husband and wife she kissed him with all of the pent-up love in her heart that she had forgotten was there for so many months. Until the judge cleared his throat and she stepped away in embarrassment.
Rukelion didn’t seem embarrassed at all. He was beaming at her with his heart in his eyes as his arm was slung over her shoulders. He pulled her closer to him and kissed the side of her head.
The judge congratulated them and offered to take a picture before giving them their paperwork back. Daisy didn’t have the chance to pull her phone out before her husband did it first without letting go of her.
She reached up to lace her fingers through his and turned her head to meet his loving gaze. They both grinned at each other as the picture was taken.
She thanked the judge as they took their paperwork back and ended up waiting fifteen minutes for their marriage certificate to be processed so they could take that too. While she was out she planned to hit the social security administration and get her name change started as well so she wouldn’t have to miss any more work.
Daisy Blaze may sort of rhyme but there were much worse last names to have. She would rather share one with her husband and future children than she would with her deadbeat mother. Besides, it would mean a lot to Rukelion. He didn’t know that name changes were optional here.
He didn’t let go of her the entire time. Even when they were in the car and she was driving he kept a hand on top of her thigh.
It was as if he had to be touching her at all times to be sure this wasn’t some wonderful dream he was going to wake up from. It hurt seeing him like that. He truly had been through so much while her memory was gone.
She was going to have to make sure he never had to worry about anything like that again. She would be there for him no matter what while he got his life on track.. It was the least she could do since she loved him and wanted him to succeed in this world.
