If You Dare To Marry Me, Then I Do Too - Chapter 7
I was sleeping in the middle of the night when I was suddenly awakened by the sound of my phone ringing. I pressed the answer button drowsily.
It was my best friend, Lili. Her voice sounded very hoarse, like she had just cried.
“Luo Luo, I have insomnia again,” she sighed. “I’m bored!”
“Why? What’s the problem? Take it easy, you’re well-clothed and well-fed. Don’t find problems for yourself!” I laughed.
“Who can compare with you? You’re immortal, you don’t eat food of common mortals[1], and you live like a happy child all day long. But I am normal so I have a lot of problems. Haaa, it’s been a year since I broke up with Nan Nan, but I still can’t forget him. Recently, I heard that he has a new girlfriend and they’re planning to get married. That jerk’s already on to his new love like our relationship was just nothing.” Lili sounded bitter.
“Who asked you to break up with him? Now you regret it!” I don’t even know if I should laugh or cry. She dumped the guy but she doesn’t want him to find someone new. What kind of logic is that?
Lili and Nan Nan were childhood friends turned lovers. They grew up and fell in love with painting together. Later, they came to Changsha to attend an art training class and got admitted to the school together. Lady Luck seemed to be on their side as they were also assigned to the same class.
Nan Nan was very good to Lili. He made breakfast for her everyday, then waited for her so they could eat it together. Lili, who always sleeps in very late, would always wait until class was about to start before she went out to eat.
In order to make Lili happy, Nan Nan got a job during his sophomore year and almost all the money he earned was used to buy things for Lili.
At that time, they were the envy of us all, especially the girls who had boyfriends. Almost all of them regarded Nan Nan as a role model for educating their boyfriends. I heard that several girls had taken the initiative to pursue Nan Nan, but he never turned his back on Lili’s feelings.
Lili, like a happy little woman covered with honey, spent four years in college under Nan Nan’s protection. After graduation, Lili ran up against a brick wall looking for a job and never found one that satisfied her. She became very moody and often fought with Nan Nan.
Nan Nan had good grades, solid professional knowledge, and he even taught himself three-dimensional drawing. The most important thing to note is that he started working in sophomore year. He had already accumulated a lot of work experience, so he was recruited before he even graduated.
Nan Nan didn’t want Lili to worry about her work for the time being. He had the ability to support her, so he wanted her to have fun first. He even suggested that she study again and go to graduate school. But Lili didn’t want to be idle at home, nor did she want to go to school again.
She got so depressed all day long and became so angry at Nan Nan. At that time, Nan Nan was very busy, often working overtime until midnight. Lili got angry at Nan Nan for neglecting her, forcing Nan Nan to become more silent. Nan Nan’s silence made Lili even more angry, and she’d scold him for long periods of time.
Finally, Nan Nan broke down one day and he slapped Lili, ruining their over a decade long relationship. Lili angrily proposed to break up, resolutely carried her luggage and left Nan Nan.
And just like that, a pair of hands that have been holding hands for more than ten years loosened because of hurting each other which made us feel sorry for it.
I didn’t expect that Lili, who took the initiative to end the relationship, would still be so hung up on him. Love is really hard to handle. When you have it, you’ll never know how much you need it until you lose it!
However, do you really have to lose it first to realize it’s worth?
I feel really sorry for Lili, but I don’t know how to comfort her. Of course if she already knew its worth in the first place, she wouldn’t be here now.
Lili sighed on the other end of the phone, “Aiya, you only realize that the wine is strong when you become so drunk, and you only know you love someone when you’ve lost him. I was the one who ruined our relationship. But even if I was, he shouldn’t be in such a hurry to fall in love with someone else, should he? He’s so terrible!”
I could feel that Lili was in a complicated mood.
“Oh well, don’t be sad. Since it’s already like this, what else can you do? There’s no medicine for regret in the world, is there?” I squeezed out a few dry words to comfort her.
“Luo Luo, are you saying I’m hopeless? I miss him so much even after breaking up for a long time, especially at night. My heart feels lonely. I want to find a man who loves me so I can lean on his broad shoulders. I feel really tired,” She answered softly.
“Are you serious? You woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me you miss having a man? Ugh, you can’t sleep because of your insomnia but why do you have to share your suffering with me? This is too much!” I raised my voice, completely forgetting that I also disturb my friends when I’m bored.
“Luo Luo, have a little compassion for me, will you? Pity this lonely little girl!” Lili said angrily.
“But how should I comfort you? Does it really feel lonely to live without love? I’m also single so how come I don’t feel lonely? Besides, it’s nice enough that we eat everyday and that our family is well-fed. Don’t talk like it’s already the end of the world.”
I have no idea what I’m talking about.
“No wonder boys in our class say that you have a glass heart. I thought that they meant your heart is fragile and easy to break, now it seems like what they meant is that you’re cold and heartless. Waa, I’m only two years older than you but could there be such a deep generation gap? It’s almost impossible to communicate!” Lili whined.
“Well, fine, let’s just say that this is all my fault. It’s a pity that I’m not a man otherwise I would have temporarily lent you myself to satisfy your cravings. God is really blind, why did he make me a woman? Lili, I’m sorry. I really can’t solve your loneliness, there’s nothing I can do to help!” I teased with a naughty smile.
“Damn Luo Luo, you make me so angry, I really want to hang up! It’s a waste of feelings complaining to you! Woooo, I’d better go talk to Zhou Na instead. Bye bye!” The ‘beep’ sound came from the phone.
She wakes me up then blames for wasting her feelings by talking to me? This injustice is even worse than Dou E’s! [2]
But if you really do have a man to accompany you through this long night, it really would be quite good. It should feel very warm.
I thought happily as I fell asleep.
The weather suddenly became very cold over the weekend. The rain came in drizzles, a gust of fierce wind hit the sycamore tree under the balcony, and the air swept up the leaves like confetti in the sky. The whole place looked very bleak.
“Luo Luo, the weather forecast says it will snow tomorrow, and the temperature will drop by several degrees. You should pay attention to keep yourself warm!” The dead mouse called me.
“Really? That’s so much fun! I love watching snow! If it snows heavier, I’ll go up to the roof and make a snowman!” I didn’t take his words seriously at all, my eyes rolled and I imagined the scene of building a snowman.
“Don’t be too happy, in case the power goes out at home again, let’s see how you live. Be careful to not freeze your nose off!” The dead mouse chuckled.
“That’s right, then I’ll just have to go to the mall again and enjoy free air conditioning!” I agreed subconsciously.
“How about this, in case the power goes out, you come to my place. I’ll prepare some delicious food for you, what do you think?” The dead mouse said kindly.
“No need to be so kind. Theft or rape, it’s just both having bad intentions. I won’t go to your house!” I joked.
“What are you even talking about, little girl? I’m a decent person, don’t just ruin my reputation like this!” He didn’t know whether he should laugh or cry.
“Fine, let’s just say that you’re a good guy. In case there’s a power outage, I’ll go over there. I’ll gladly use your air conditioner free of charge. Hey, I’ll hang up now, bye!” I smiled and agreed casually.
When I got up the next day, it had snowed, and the first snow in Changsha was really heavy. The eaves outside the balcony were covered with a thick layer of snow.
