If You Wish For A Married Couple’s Duties - Chapter 63
Grrr—!
An angry werewolf bared its teeth toward the opponent in front of it.
It’s because the human that has been avoiding its attacks was being rather annoying.
Unlike the other humans, he wasn’t wearing a single piece of metal on his body, and was small and insignificant-looking.
Although its leader’s roar to kill every human it saw was ringing in its head, it couldn’t easily attack the human that was in front of it.
This was because of the golden eyes that stared at it fiercely, which was similar to the eyes of a predator eyeing its prey.
“I heard that you’ve been brainwashed, but you must still have some discernment left.”
Just then, the small man mumbled to himself and lifted up his bow.
“Sorry, but I have no choice either. People will die if I don’t kill you.”
The arrowheads made out of obsidian pierced through the werewolf’s head in the blink of an eye.
Its huge body swayed and collapsed on its back helplessly.
“Daniel, are you okay?”
Dooha, the small human that got rid of the werewolf swiftly, turned her head.
Daniel was behind her and forced a smile despite looking quite overwhelmed.
“I’m fine. Seriously, I keep troubling you, Madam.”
“What are you saying? I wouldn’t have been able to do this if it weren’t for Daniel.”
Dooha plucked an arrow from the monster’s corpse.
As she looked at the pile of burnt monster corpses that was scattered in her surroundings, Dooha’s brows furrowed.
They were all dealt with by Daniel’s magic.
Dooha was currently dealing with the monsters that he didn’t manage to catch, and played the role of protecting him.
‘I’ve always had this thought, but magic is amazing.’
Apparently, Dooha wasn’t the only one that thought so.
She could feel the awe-filled gazes being directed at Daniel from the soldiers that followed behind.
It was quite surprising that a wizard could catch more than dozens of monsters that wouldn’t have been easily caught even if multiple soldiers attacked at the same time.
If it weren’t for the fact that the troops led by the duke and the knights in the vanguard has already cleared a certain amount of monsters in front, it was hard to estimate how difficult the battle would have been
She kept an eye on Count Jive, who was killing monsters a short distance away.
As they had yet to enter the valley, the wizard in the dark green cloak was with him.
She was relieved that they weren’t next to the duke.
“Come on, get up quickly. You can’t let your guard down.”
Dooha reached a hand out to Daniel, who leant on the base of a thick tree trunk like he was about to collapse.
He glanced at the small hand that was outstretched towards him dazedly.
How unaware of him she was that she’d unhesitatingly act like this?
Daniel revealed a self-mocking smile, eventually grabbed her hand to rise to his feet.
“Never in my life did I imagine that I’d be escorted by a woman.”
“Never in my life did I imagine that I’d escort a wizard after coming to the empire.”
“No matter when it is, unexpected things will always bring merriment into your life, don’t you think? It’s quite exciting to be escorted by a woman.”
Daniel tilted his head and gave a sly smile.
“Maybe it’s because the other party is the Madam.”
“It seems like you still have some strength in you. Or, is it because Daniel likes to flatter people?”
“Well, this level is still considered relaxed.”
Even though a shabby look didn’t seem to blend well with a proudly raised chin, it looked overly fitting on Daniel.
Indeed, he does have a radiantly shining beauty even if he’s wearing a straw mat.
“If you continue being so carefree, you might suffer a huge loss later on……”
Kuang—!
At the rumble that suddenly travelled over from afar, Dooha turned around quickly.
A dust storm could be seen ahead.
“That side is…”
It was definitely the direction which the duke and knights were in.
Worry appeared within Dooha’s eyes immediately.
“Don’t worry, Madam.”
Daniel reassured her, whose feet were tensed like she was about to run off.
“The Duke seems to be overpowering the monsters with quite a flourish.”
He shrugged his shoulders lightly when Dooha made a puzzled expression.
“Madam also knows this. About the fact that the Duke is the Empire’s strongest knight.”
“What about that?”
“The title of the ‘strongest knight in the empire’ isn’t given to just anyone.”
The Krone Empire was known as the country of knights, and there were a multitude of skillful knights.
In the first place, one couldn’t obtain the title of knight in the empire if their swordsmanship wasn’t outstanding.
“At the Duke’s level of skill, he is capable of causing the ground to collapse with a swing of his sword. Splitting a monster into half isn’t considered much.”
“What?”
Dooha frowned like she couldn’t imagine it at all.
One of the things she’d learnt while killing monsters was the fact that their skin was harder than stone.
The spearheads that soldiers used to stab there would bounce off no matter how sharp they were, and it was hard for arrows released with natural strength to cause any wound unless it was aimed at the soft mucous membranes, such as the eyes and mouth.
But to cut such monsters into half with a single stroke? That’s complete nonsense.
“I think Daniel is exaggerating a little.”
“If that’s what the Madam thinks, there’s no need for me to explain. The Duke’s pride would be quite hurt if he heard that.”
Daniel seemed to find it quite pleasing and chuckled for a moment, before his eyes widened.
Before she knew it, a serious expression replaced the playfulness that disappeared from his face.
“Madam.”
“I also heard it.”
Dooha had also felt the unusual change.
She quickly nocked an arrow on her bow string with her senses tensed.
Tap tap tap—!
“What was that sound?”
“I think it’s coming from that side.”
The soldiers, who heard an unusual sound a step late, turned their heads around.
“D*mn it.”
Daniel still raised his mouth and quietly uttered swear words.
The monsters, which were supposed to appear from the direction of the nest only, began to pounce at the rear, which didn’t have any knights.
“Everyone, settle down! There’s no need to be surprised—!”
Count Jive seemed to also be startled as disconcertment was written all over his face and began shouting in all directions.
“Northwest! A group of monsters has appeared in the northwestern direction—!”
With a soldier’s yell about the sudden appearance of a group of monsters, a fierce battle began anew.
* * *
It has been three hours since the troops in the rear were suddenly attacked.
The sun had already set, and only a few traces of the setting sun remained in the sky.
“Help, help me!
An utterly exhausted soldier of Esbaden fell onto his bottom.
He kept scrambling backwards, as the torso of the monster that was slowly stalked towards him and crouched down.
“Don’t come here! I said don’t come! Help—!”
The weapon he had been holding was already thrown away a long while ago.
He tried screaming for help, but his allies didn’t come.
It was to be expected, as the allies in his vicinity had already left the world.
When a group of monsters suddenly attacked them, half of the soldiers panicked, and they were all wiped out in the end.
“Uaaack!”
At the sight of the monster pouncing at him, the soldier closed his eyes for the last time.
But he didn’t feel any pain.
Was this God’s final mercy?
The soldier opened his tightly closed eyes.
He only inhaled after seeing the corpse of the monster that died before him with its tongue stuck out.
“Are you okay?”
The soldier’s eyes widened at the person that appeared in front of him.
It was Daniel’s escort, Dooha, who had become the main topic of conversation in their journey to Tochern Castle.
Dooha helped the dazed soldier up and pointed towards a direction.
“Run in that direction right now. There aren’t any signs of monsters through that path. If you keep going, you’ll be able to join Count Jive’s party.”
The soldier barely managed to come to his senses and bowed his head.
“T—thank you!”
Dooha watched the soldier and his greeting of thanks disappear in the distance and sighed.
Just a few hours ago, more than half of the soldiers were killed in an unexpected attack by a group of monsters.
This was because the knights placed all their focus in the direction of the nest.
In the end, Daniel squeezed out the remaining mana he had and collapsed out of exhaustion.
‘Fortunately, this situation is almost over.’
Although the situation didn’t worsen any further than he’d expected as a wizard was also with Count Jive, there was something puzzling about this.
‘It’s truly strange. They had definitely said that brainwashing magic was used, but why were they attacked?’
Count Jive and the wizard were present.
If they’re controlling the monsters with brainwashing magic, shouldn’t they concentrate on the duke?
‘I don’t get it. What is the reason?’
Dooha moved forward while frowning.
She was patrolling to save any possible survivors.
Most of the nearby monsters have either died or fled, but that might not be the case.
The half unconscious Daniel tried to dissuade her, but it was useless.
As long as she detected the signs of a living person, there’s no reason for Dooha to reverse her decision.
In fact, she didn’t regret her decision.
Thanks to that, she had just saved a soldier from a monster.
But Dooha’s heart was heavy.
‘Only innocent people were sacrificed because of his plan.’
If it wasn’t for Sir Nate’s plan to release the monsters and kill the duke, there wouldn’t have been so many deaths occurring.’
He was someone that didn’t care about what he sacrificed in order to achieve his goal.
‘How disgusting. He’s just like Nihir.’
The sudden thought of her older brother caused Dooha to frown like she was offended.
‘Should I head back now?’
Dooha lightly shook her head and turned around.
She couldn’t detect any signs of living people, and the surroundings were getting darker.
No matter how good her night vision was, it was rather dangerous for her to remain in a place like this by herself.
Crack.
Just as she was about to return to where Count Jive and Daniel were at.
The sound of snapping branches echoed throughout the pitch-black forest.
Although it was a very small sound, the surroundings were particularly quiet, so it sounded unusually loud.
As cold sweat dripped down her back, Dooha slowly raised her head.
Something was on the thick branch that hung over her head.
That something had bright red eyes and was drooling.
It was a werewolf.
Craaack.
A precarious sound continued to ring from the branch that it was on.
Dooha’s breathing slowed unconsciously.
It was several times larger than the werewolf she’d seen up till now, and there was a large wound on the back of its neck.
From the amount of blood, it seemed like quite a fatal wound, but that monster didn’t even let out any cry.
No matter how she looked at it, that werewolf didn’t seem normal.
‘Why did I have to run into this kind of monster when I’m alone.’
Dooha gritted her teeth quietly.
As she tried to suppress the trembling in her hands, she slowly reached backwards to her quiver of arrows.
