In Harry Potter as Neville Longbottom - Chapter 58: Vanishing Cabinet -1
The orange colour of the setting sun dimmed, and the darkness started taking over inside the study room. The floating candles inside the study room magically lit up. Only the sound of a running pen brought some life to this closed room inside the Longbottom’s manor.
Neville after getting his second Horcrux relaxed mentally. The failure of getting the diary kept his nerves in tense condition. He still has no idea what happened to the Diary Horcrux but it’s not like he can ask Malfoy about it. Imagine if somehow Malfoy discovers the secret of Horcrux!
Maybe a man like him, known for his ambition and deep scheming mind, will find many uses of the diary to terrify and control the wizarding world.
Throwing these thoughts away, Neville finished his planning diary. He just wrote crossed the Horcrux from this list and wrote possible aftermath of this and other ideas that he had in recent days.
After finishing his new entry, he grabbed his suitcase and directly apparated inside his garden area. He played with his pets for some time there and then allowed the white monkeys or The Demiguise to come out in the real world. Keeping all pets in the suitcase is not inhumane or uncomfortable for the animals. That’s the exact opposite of it.
The suitcase has many customizable habitats that he had carefully selected and modified based on the preferences of his pets. The safe and almost natural environment is very suitable for them. The pets love that area but unlike the flying snakes who are too young to unlock their racial talents, these monkeys are almost grown-up.
Their playful nature pushes them to prank each other and play with each other and the extra space inside the garden area allows them to play more crazily. For Neville, this is almost therapeutic. Smiling, he went towards his room after giving instructions to his house-elf Dufus for their care.
Now, the second Horcrux is here. He can focus on the side project. He promised Diana that he will play with her regularly and meet her often. However, it is impossible to make a long-distance journey every time. Hence, he must fix his Vanishing Cabinet.
Putting both cabinets side-by-side, Neville started copying and fixing the broken one. Because these pair of vanishing cabinets act as a medium together, they have no difference in their runic design.
Neville first sketched the rune multiple times with the pen on paper before taking out his Goblin Knife. Dipping its tip in the tree sap mixed with dragon blood, he carefully started etching the runes on the broken part of the Vanishing Cabinet.
In the beginning, he even used a mending charm – Reparo, to try to fix it but obviously, the alchemy product is not something that can be fixed so easily. Hence the manual labour started line by line and symbol by symbol, Neville started copying the rune.
In the beginning, Neville was only copying the runes but later, thanks to his intense studying of runes in last year, he could identify several key points.
The circles and symbols represent astrological symbols like the sun and moon and in this way, the alchemy product was tapping the magical energy present on the planet. Then the second key point was the in and out point that was etched twice meaning a person can use both of these to get in or out of their space.
However, the space teleportation rune was not clear to Neville. This was far beyond his current understanding. The rune was complex and multi-layered with many symbols placed in specific places. Neville copied these to ask for further guidance from Ms Ravenclaw.
Time flew like a wild owl and the evening turned into night. Neville was rudely interrupted by a knock on the door that almost made him ruin his work. Putting the knife down, Neville invited the visitor inside.
“Neville, Dinner is ready. Let’s go!” It was the smiling snake, Pansy. The culprit of scaring him and almost running his work. If this was in past, Neville would have surely commented something or said something rude but now, he just ignored her behaviour.
He had completely changed the trajectory of this girl and he was not sure if that was for better or worse.
“Why didn’t Winny or Silvi come for this?” Neville asked while he followed Pansy to the Dining area.
“Well, they alerted me, and I told them, I will call you out, Plus, I asked them to make something new for dessert today. I want to thank Hermione for her help.”
“What help? What are you both busy with anyway?” Neville asked but just as they both entered the dining hall; he saw Hermione’s head buried in a pile of books.
Neville felt this bookworm might die from the extra study!
“Hermione? Don’t you think you should not bring your books to the dinner table?” Neville questioned the supposedly smart girl in the room.
“I am busy looking at notes, Neville. Can’t afford to waste time on this. I never knew there is so much information I missed while writing my notes.” Hermione replied but she kept her eyes glued to her notes while her hands were busy grabbing food from the plate.
Neville didn’t say anything at first and hoped his Nan will handle the situation, but his Nan took for her dinner with his parents in their room. That made him unable to watch this bushy head torture herself any longer.
