In The Multiverse But It’s Slightly Different - Chapter 2 Rebirth
“Huh?”
I was dead? I guess it was pretty obvious, as I literally died twice in the past half hour, but it was still kind of surprising…
Death tilted his head in confusion “What do you mean, ‘Huh?’? You’re dead. Nothing left of you. Nada, Zip, Zero, Null-”
“Yeah, I get that” I cut him off “I was just surprised for a second”
The man nodded in understanding “Alright, so now, let’s take a look at your life..”
He went and disappeared somewhere before coming back with a large folder
“Jack Duran? Right?”
I nodded, still in quite a bit of shock that I was dead and actually talking to death
He opened the folder, looking through the contents at the beginning
“Let’s see.. Born to Martha and Kyle Duran, you were in a poor family for most of your life. Sometimes went days without food… Martha died from heart cancer when you were 6, sending kyle into a spiral of depression.. Abuse for several years.. Top student at your school and skipped multiple grades! Congrats!.. Ohhhh, but you couldn’t find a job, yeah that’s Haedra’s fault”
I furrowed my eyebrows “Haedra?”
He nodded like it was the most obvious thing in the world “Yeah, Haedra. Goddess of Office Work and Monotonous labor?”
I just gave him a blank stare
“*Sigh* Humans these days, not even knowing their current gods…”
“Anyways, continuing on… Eventually got a job at the nearby gas station as a store clerk, stuck with an asshole manager, sorry bud..”
“Not your fault..”
“Even through that shitty job, however, you stayed optimistic and fine with your life, even donating most of your paycheck to different charities! That will earn you a lot…”
“A lot? Lot of what?”
He looked up from the folder with a raised brow “Karmic Value, you ever study Buddhism? Or was it Hinduism.. No clue”
I nodded, still very much confused “Yeah, I know the basics…”
“Well, Karmic Value is sort of the measure of Good or Bad things you have done in your life. A Positive value will allow you to be reborn in other worlds and buy supernatural powers and stuff like that.. A negative value, wellll..” He trailed off
I didn’t bother asking him about the Negative since I already had a decent picture of what could happen
“Wait.. you said other worlds? What kind of other worlds?” I was intrigued. I had read a fair few Fanfictions and Web novels when I could, so if this was like that…
“Pretty much anywhere to be honest. You want to be reborn in FRIENDS? Go ahead. Anime worlds like Bleach and Naruto are of course on there. Anything you can think of”
That sent my mind spinning. I could go anywhere? Anywhere I imagined? The things I could do in some place like Marvel…
“Of course” He snapped me out of my thoughts “There are prerequisites to going to those worlds as well. Soul Strength, Power, Karmic Value…”
“For example, if your power is too high, you won’t be able to go to somewhere like, say, Blues Clues. However, if you have insufficient power, you won’t be allowed in a world like Dragon Ball”
I nodded, sounded like a pretty simple concept
“Moving on, I’ve calculated your Karmic Value already” He pulled out a folded piece of paper from his back pocket
“Let’s see..” He unfolded it and I could see his eyes widen ever so slightly
“How much?” I asked eagerly
“Well, this is unexpected..”
“What??”
“This value isn’t very much” My expression fell “For a top god like me, but certainly unachievable for a human like you…”
He handed me the paper, which had the number ‘2,345,198’ Printed in large numbers, right on the middle of the paper
I shook my head “I have no better idea than you”
He hummed, clearly interested but let it go
“Follow me” he suddenly said, beginning to walk off
I was surprised by the sudden order, but ran off to him a few seconds later
We walked in the white nothingness for what seemed like hours, Death not saying a single word
“Here we are..”
He brought us up to a large lever, painted in a Gray color, red outlining the sides of the handle
Death pulled it and suddenly the floor in front of us fell, bringing up a large spinning wheel
Actually, large isn’t quite right for it. the correct word would be MASSIVE
I couldn’t see the top, nor the sides, once it was fully exposed. The inside was lined with what seemed like an infinite amount of small letters and phrases, accompanied by small pictures beside them
‘What do they say..?’ I walked up to the wheel and my eyes widened
“A tree?.. A sock that belonged to Trump when he was sixteen?! What use is that?!?!”
There were many of these pointless objects here. Toothbrushes, pins, a single leaf..
“That’s what you will have to figure out. Sometimes this stuff can come in extremely handy”
I shook my head, Sighing in frustration “What even is this thing anyways?”
He walked up and stood beside me “This is the wheel of materials and power. You could get anything from this wheel, be it Haki or A literal piece of shit”
“And why am I here?” I thought I was supposed to be choosing my next world?
“Well, your Karmic Value allows you ten spins on this thing. Normally, first time humans are only given one spin, but their value usually only reaches up to the thousands, only rarely in the negative”
I looked back up at the massive wheel “So how do I spin it?” It could be literally anything, of course I wanted to see what I could get..
Death walked back to the lever and tapped his scythe twice on the ground
In front of me, the floor opened up again, a lever just like the last one raising up
“Just pull that!” He shouted from his spot behind me
I didn’t hesitate to pull it down, spinning first my first time
..I was however, very much unprepared
The wheel didn’t gradually speed up. No, it went at least mach 6 in the first few seconds
Let me say, mach 6 winds aren’t the greatest to stand right next to..
Immediately I was sent flying off into another direction, the sound of Deaths hysterical laughing in my ears
I landed maybe a couple hundred yards away, right on my back
Nothing broke however, which was surprising
I walked back with a frown, death still laughing on the ground
Looking towards the wheel, i saw what i got –
‘1940’s Television! Service not included’
I wanted to die..
Death calmed down enough to stand up, but fell down straight after upon seeing that on the wheel
I grunted and pulled him back up as he calmed down again
“Ok, ok” He breathed “Use this lever this time, that one is just for fun” The first one reset itself as the second fell back to the ground
Grunting again, I pulled on the lever, the winds not effecting me anymore
It stopped and I saw what I got
‘Authentic Fallout Bottlecap!’
“FUCK! AGAIN!”
‘One Senbon needle’
“Rghhh”
‘Baseball Bat used by one of the New York Yankees’
“Ok, slightly better..”
‘Stick’
“RIGGED!!”
‘Katana from Warring States Japan’
My eyes widened at that
“I can deal with that..”
‘One ton of Asbestos!’
“Why.. Why is that even on here…”
“Because Asbestos commercials are multiversal” Death giggled
I grunted and spun it once again
‘Rick’s Revolver’
I froze
“Rick from the walking dead?”
Death walked up to the wheel, leaning in towards the picture “Looks like it!”
I hummed and spun the lever sending the man flying
“HAHA!!”
He came back up, giggling himself “Good one!” and then the world went gray, I collapsed to my knees and I found it hard to breath
“Never do that again?”
I nodded shakily and the atmosphere returned to normal
“Good!”
‘Holy shit, was that Killing Intent? Scaryyy..’
I looked back up at the wheel
‘Rusty Bucket’
“FUUUUUCK!!”
Death giggled again, I swear he used to be a school girl..
“Last spin!” He told me as I pulled the stick down
The wheel spun one last time until it came down upon a glowing gold outline
‘Harry Potter Magic!’
Death stopped laughing at that and he turned serious
“That’s surprising..”
I looked up at him, not realizing the importance of gold outlines
“What?”
“It’s just, no human has ever been lucky enough to get a gold outline from their first ten spins”
I hummed, not bothering to ask what it was “Guess I’m just lucky then?”
He didn’t say anything, just walking back in the direction we started in
“Time to choose your next world!”
