Inside The Black Mist - Chapter 79 - Tree Spirits
“Run, run! Don’t stop!”
Han Shu’s voice echoed in the open area as the team moved quickly, passing through scattered rocks toward the direction of the high wall.
Ji Yu led the way in front to ensure that the team returned to their original position, where they had descended from the wall before. The reason for returning to the original position was because there was still a rope hanging there.
That rope could allow several people to climb over the high wall at a faster speed.
“I told you, there’s never a smooth infiltration operation; it’s always getting discovered!” Han Shu shouted as the team passed by a rusted car carcass, with only a frame left and its bottom entangled by a sickly bacterial colony. The captain stopped in his tracks, pivoted behind the car body, and fired his rifle at the pursuers behind them.
“Did you ever say that, Captain?” Tianyang reserved his opinion on Han Shu’s words, then stopped behind another pile of rocks on the other side, providing cover with Han Shu for their teammates.
“He never said it; the memory of middle-aged men is worrying.” Cang Du, who had almost caught up with Han Shu, passed by.
Han Shu cursed, “You little brat, who are you calling a middle-aged man? I’m full of youthful vigor, still a young lad, okay!”
“Do you not feel guilty saying that?” After running alongside Cang Du and letting Han Shu and Tianyang open some distance ahead, Ji Yu turned around.
With an explosive aura, the woman drew her bowstring taut and shot out a volley of arrows, alternating with Cang Du’s starlight beams, providing cover.
Without troublesome dark creatures’ subordinates like wizards participating in the pursuit, only the mad dogs and archers, they couldn’t hold back the four Sublimates.
After about ten minutes, the team returned to the original position of the high wall. Han Shu shouted, “Tianyang, you kid, go up first!”
Without hesitation, Tianyang’s Star Essence manifested, faint glimmers drifting among his hair.
The young man suddenly accelerated, turning into a silver-white shadow, approaching the high wall at a speed no less than that of the long-haired prince. Then, using the rope left by Cang Du, he quickly climbed up to the top of the wall.
After reaching the top of the tree wall, Tianyang laid on the wall, propping up the assault rifle and shooting at the pursuers below.
Starlight beams rained down, knocking down the mad dogs running in the forefront or those mysterious archers with goat faces.
With Tianyang as the high-ground fire support, Han Shu and the others easily climbed up the high wall one after another.
As soon as Cang Du and Ji Yu climbed up the high wall, they didn’t delay, grabbed the rope, and climbed over the high wall, descending rapidly towards the ground.
While Han Shu fired at the pursuers below, he shouted, “Tianyang, you go down too; let Lao Xu and the others come over for support.”
“Got it.”
Tianyang grabbed the rope, about to slide down the tree wall, and his heart moved slightly, looking towards a human-faced flower three meters away from him.
On that human-faced flower, two black spots appeared in the flower bud that looked like a face, as if a pair of eyes were looking at him.
A wave of discomfort surged in the young man’s heart, then he slid down the high wall. While sliding down, he contacted Lao Xu to have two Falcon armored vehicles come over quickly.
Upon landing on the ground, Tianyang looked up, and Han Shu had already slid down, shouting. He quickly pulled away, and together with Cang Du, he fired at the top of the tree wall.
Mad dogs had already climbed over the high wall, but they were hit by their shots, roaring as they fell from the wall.
Even if they didn’t die immediately, they had broken their hands and feet and were unable to get up for a while.
A piercing screech sounded behind him, and Tianyang turned his head to see two Falcon armored vehicles coming over. They skidded to a stop on the street, and the doors of the car compartments slid open from the inside.
On one of the vehicles, Lao Xu shouted, “Get in the car quickly!”
Everyone hurried in the direction of the armored vehicle. Tianyang couldn’t shake the feeling that the ground was slightly shaking.
As he climbed into the vehicle, it suddenly jolted, and Tianyang immediately knew it wasn’t his imagination.
But there was no time to dwell on the sudden tremor. As soon as Han Shu closed the door, he shouted, “Quick, quick, quick, let’s retreat; get out of this damn place!”
The flame soldier responsible for driving sharply turned the steering wheel, the vehicle turned around, and with full horsepower, it rushed forward.
Tianyang opened the roof hatch, crawled into the gunner’s seat, and looked toward the direction of the high wall. The dark creatures on the wall were frantically climbing over, and suddenly, the tree wall that blocked the road appeared blurry in Tianyang’s sight.
Tianyang paused, rubbed his eyes, and then realized it wasn’t his eyes playing tricks on him, but the fact that the wall was vibrating at an extremely high frequency.
He immediately shouted into the car, “Something is happening behind us!”
Inside the vehicle, Han Shu opened the rear-firing hatch, revealing the shooting window. Looking through the window, he also saw the tree wall vibrating.
Han Shu couldn’t help but rub his scruffy chin, “What’s going on now?”
In the gunner’s seat, Tianyang controlled the tactical eye to zoom in. He saw that the entangled roots on the tree wall were wriggling, causing the “decorations” hanging on them to fall off one by one.
When his gaze accidentally swept over a human-faced flower, the young man’s body trembled lightly. In his line of sight, the flower beneath the flower bud, a vine was dancing.
Then more vines emerged, and with the assistance of the tactical eye, Tianyang clearly saw that the ends of those vines were opening small mouths.
Like baby mouths!
These vines reached down and bit into the roots, using them as leverage to pull something out.
After a moment, Tianyang saw that the human-faced flower with dozens of vines flying around it detached from the roots and fell.
Looking at the other human-faced flowers, they were all the same, detaching from the roots and falling to the ground.
Immediately after, these human-faced flowers began to entangle each other. Through the tactical eye, Tianyang saw that it was like thousands of snakes writhing together desperately.
This scene was also seen by the people in the car. Including Han Shu, everyone’s complexion was extremely pale.
Below the high wall in the distance, hundreds of human-faced flowers were entwined with each other, forming a mass resembling a small mountain. Some of the vines twisted into the shape of arms, and one vine-entangled arm reached out, grabbing a nearby mad dog that had fallen and then pulling it back.
The writhing vines suddenly parted, forming a huge mouth, and the mad dog was thrown into the mouth, apparently being eaten.
Then, the eerie and terrifying thing began to climb up, the twisted vines forming limbs. In the blink of an eye, the “giant” covered with flowers stood up beside the high wall.
When it stood up, its height even surpassed that of the tree wall behind it. Roughly estimating it, it was at least thirty meters tall!
“Tree spirit!” In the car, the knowledgeable Lao Xu exclaimed. “This type of dark creature is a collective formed by multiple individuals. They possess characteristics of both plants and animals, fear fire, and have great resistance to physical attacks. Such monsters have been discovered near the Yunxiang Base before, but according to records, the tallest tree spirit was only seven or eight meters.”
Han Shu stared at the giant that was striding towards them. “So, are we hitting the jackpot?”
