Iridescent Spirit - Chapter 58 A Skeletons Vision
Ever since Layla Gibbs had lost her organs and the rest of her fleshy body, she could only roam the world as a stick-like skeleton. Nevertheless, the girl was not dead, but a living skeleton.
Her clothes would always need to be tied around a bundle of cotton in order to hide the fact that she was not human. Furthermore, she would wear a mask and robe twenty-four seven. At this point in time, Layla was accustomed to living the skeleton life.
While she was described as “skin and bones” by Clara Nixon in her previous life, her current body did not even have skin.
However, Layla no longer cared about her appearance. As long as she could watch over the beautiful Clara in the sidelines like the mob she always was, why should she be concerned over her body?
Although she was missing her vitals, that did not stop her from needing food or sleep to replenish her energy. In fact, one of the best points of her new body was that she does not need to use the restroom, which was quite baffling when she thought about where the food she ate went.
Nonetheless, her skeleton body was not the only thing different about her.
As usual, she watched over the group in silence. Twelve large orbs of different colors were before her eyes. Next to them were nearly transparent wisps flying around the perimeter.
However, the number of wisps in this area was bizarre in contrast to how many Layla normally witnessed in the past.
“How do we fight the specters, which are essentially disembodied ghosts, with just physical weapons and no magic?” Nora asked the obvious.
“Will illusions work?” Melody glanced at Allen.
“How should I know? I’m not a shaman, priest, nor a scholar. I don’t know how to deal with specters at all,” Allen picked up another book an began reading.
“Why are you so calm about all of this?” Jade questioned. For someone stuck in a perilous situation, he was far too relaxed.
“You’re pretty sharp aren’t you?” Allen replied without looking up from his book.
“You either have a way out of here or you have given up on life. The latter is far too unlikely, so I believe that you could tell us how to get out of here. ”
“You’re right, but why should I help you?” Allen flipped a page before Melody snatched the book from his hands.
“Answer or mark my words,” Melody glared right into Allen’s eyes, “We will drag you down together with us.”
Compared to the handsome young men that Melody had seen in this world, Allen’s dull and average face was a turn off to her. Heck, even Ursear Hunigulus, the elderly bear beastman, was more appealing in appearance than Allen.
“What can you do to me? I can make sure none of you could leave this place if I wanted to-”
In that second, Allen was sliced in half.
Or, at least he felt that way.
Breaking out in cold sweat, Allen felt around his torso to check for his wounds. But, to his relief, his body was still whole and no blood was leaking from his body.
Despite knowing that his body was fine, the sensations of pain felt too real.
Was that merely just an illusion?
“W-what was that?” He turned his head toward the perpetrator.
“I didn’t think it would work,” Jae muttered. Since the longer they remained in the specter-filled area, the higher the chances that the disembodied ghosts would try to possess them once again.
And, Jae Farley would rather not face another round in his inner world lest the boy within him would choose to abandon Jae this time.
Out of simple curiosity, he decided to test the powers of a fairy by showing Allen an illusion of Jae’s recollections of being cut apart.
“I can use this,” Jae mumbled while approaching Allen.
“Hey, if you don’t spill the beans, then I’m going to slice you apart for real,” Jae threatened as an illusion of a blade covered his mace.
“F*** it. Fine, I’ll tell you this. As the auction master, do you know how I obtained everything?” Allen swallowed down the urge to shake uncontrollably as he returned Jae’s gaze without wavering.
“No, I don’t care. But if it’s important to the situation, say it,” Jae pointed his fake blade at Allen.
“Whoo! You go, Jae! Threaten the man!” Scarlett cheered like a mother watching her son at a sport’s game, ruining the dark atmosphere.
“I don’t encourage bad behavior~! Bad Jae~!” Wendy pouted, but Bridget held the cervitaur back.
“Why is he using the illusion of the senses better than me?” Melody sighed while remembering a certain rock. Perhaps she should have visited her fairy godparents when she had time back in Belkchroma. She could have obtained some valuable advice from those fairies instead of meandering around the art of illusions mindlessly.
“…well, I was born with a natural ability to steal anything. Back in the previous town, I overheard that the Motionless Lake was formed by an artifact that disintegrated anything to ash. I just have to steal that and deactivate it,” Allen frowned, “However, I’m reluctant to test my theory. After all, there’s a high chance that I will be turned into ash myself.”
“Does the artifact happen to be in that completely obvious black pagoda in the middle of the ash lake?” Nora asked. The pagoda in question was unquestionably struck in the center of the Mindless Lake.
“As if! That pagoda is home to the leader of the ghosts! The artifact is somewhere in the sand, so if I could get a general idea of where it is, then I could activate my ability and steal it,” Allen pried the book away from Melody’s grasp. He had just gotten to the most interesting scene of the boring romance novel-the divorce.
Layla ignored the side conversation between the children and auction master, who was now a homeless thief. Since most of Allen’s wealth was in the dome, the moment it collapsed was when Allen’s entire savings and home disappeared.
While clutching onto her bow and arrows, the skeleton observed several wisps merged together to form abnormally colossal spiritual figures. Before her empty eye sockets, an army of specters was created.
“Clara. Crackle. Clara!” Layla could not wait anymore. If she waited for the others to take action like how she always did in the past, then the specters would possess them before they could find that so-called artifact.
Moreover, the skeleton was not willing to see her symbol of strength and pride to be destroyed by the invisible forces.
“What is it, Layla? You never help out when we are planning, nor do you aid us that much in fights. What do you have to say now?” Clara reprimanded the skeleton.
Slightly faltering back, Layla wished to say it was nothing and fade back into the comfortable background, but now was not the time to hesitate.
“Clara, the ghosts. I mean, the specters. Crackle. I can see them,” Layla replied, “And they’re coming here as we speak!”
“What?”
The rest of the group turned their attention to Layla’s words.
“We have to leave now!” Jade commanded as the children hurriedly scrambled up the carriage.
“Go~! Hurry and run~!” Wendy ordered the two-headed horse.
With a determined neigh, the horse dashed through the thin trails between the ash garden.
“No, it’s not fast enough!” Layla exclaimed.
Nora turned off her human-vision and began to see the world of mana once again. Balls of multi-colored light floated around the slime, but she quickly realized that the world she perceived was different from Layla’s.
While the slime could observe mana itself, the skeleton could discern souls directly.
“Neiheeee!” The horse released an absurd shriek, indicating that it had been possessed by one of the specters.
Tripping over its legs, it toppled over. The carriage soon followed.
“Jump!” Jade commanded.
However, it was too late.
The carriage had already fallen into the ash lake with the entire group within.
And, sunk into a world of dust.
