Just A Pawn - Chapter 5 Posting Bail
Pawn observed the two demons that had revealed her nature as a support spirit, thus ruining all her plans.
The more serious of the two had a scar around her left eye, the only difference in appearance between her and the ‘carefree’ one.
(They actually look… a bit familiar,) thought Pawn, as she analyzed the features of the twins.
“These two came asking around about a support spirit being kept within my prison, which was strange as we only had you here,” The princess-like demon said in an accusing yet amused tone as she sat upon her throne.
“Yep, and were here to save you…” declared the carefree one towards Pawn in a happy tone.
Then upon noticing their bracelets, the demons’ identities suddenly became apparent to Pawn.
“…I guess good karma isn’t a thing in the demon realm, eh…” Pawn complained out loud at the unfairness of the situation, her plan to escape in three days, now in shambles, do to saving the life of the two children.
The serious twin, now realizing that Pawn may had apparently been keeping her abilities a secret, had a slightly apologetic look on her face…
“Now then, I’ll be needing you to empty out your stash of hidden goods miss support spirit, and don’t be holding out on me, I can hear every thought that passes through your little head,” said the red dress wearing demon while dawning a wicked smile.
“Haa…” Pawn sighed, realizing she could only obey the order, there were no doubt guards hidden within the room, and enough enchantments on the building to prevent any other option from being feasible.
Pawn began removing all of her possessions from her inventory, hundreds of food items that she had been saving for rationing upon her escape, several books, weapons, and clothing items as well, dozens of enchanted and miscellaneous items emerged formed a small pile upon the shiny black floor.
“That’s everything…” Pawn grumbled regretfully at the loss of the collection she had spent years building.
Pawn hadn’t noticed that bringing out the items, had actually costed a much smaller portion of Mana then normally would be required, she was currently a bit distracted after all.
“Hmm… alright then, you can leave now…” said the important looking demon, she could see Pawn’s thoughts, and thus knew that what Pawn had said was indeed the truth, so she casually dismissed Pawn with a wave of her hand.
“…Go where specifically,” asked Pawn cautiously, she was feeling a bit ‘naked’ without her stash of ‘pay-to-win’ items.
“Hmm, how should I know, just leave, go with them or something,” the demon indicated the two grey-skinned demon sisters as she spoke.
(So they’re arrested as well now? that’s… fair?) thought pawn, incorrectly guessing the demoness’ meaning.
“No, you can leave, as in your free to go, we had only kept you here because you were an enemy of demon kind, or perhaps you had valuable Intel, but now, because of those two, I know that was never really the case,” the wrath demon said so as she again indicated the two sister demons.
She then briefly paused to take a breath before continuing her explanation.
“Thanks to them we found the bracelet you had been hiding on your person, it would block any information gathering magic, including my telepathy, and sight as well when wished so by the user,” she continued as she held up said bracelet.”
with it now gone, I can search your whole mind without a problem, and I did so while you were sleeping… imagine my surprise at what I saw, a spirit that hates the majority of her own kind, and occasionally saves demon children in secret, somehow doing so without even becoming corrupted into a demon herself, why the hell would I keep you ‘here’ then?” the demon asked as she tilted her head in a cute manner.
Spirits were very easily corrupted towards becoming demons, fairies, or cursed beings.
Which they would become being dependant on what energy they’d take in, and their perspective.
A lack of conviction may lead a spirit to becoming a demon, an overly energetic minded individual may lose themselves, becoming a fairy, and an overly negative individual may ‘fall’ and become corrupted into an evil spirit or a dark fairy.
“…” Pawn was shocked by the demon’s words, could she have just left at any moment, with only her belongings as payment?
Was it all just a pointless waist of time…
The demon who could sense these feelings smiled somewhat, and then spoke once more.
“You don’t need to worry about that… as you closed a demon gate upon your entry into this realm, and thus hindered all of demon kind, ever so slightly at least, you actually would normally be imprisoned for at least another 190 more years, but your belongings, knowledge, previous aid, time served, and the funds which the twins over there offered, actually just barely posted your bail,” the demons words strangely reassured Pawn by assuring her she deserved to be in the prison.
“…Um, in that case, I-I guess I’ll just be going now, thanks for not killing me, and the sludge was… the best sludge I’ve ever had…”Pawn said as she walked over to the twins location, not turning her back on the demon as she did so.
Her sarcastic comment, was met with an equally sarcastic smile from the demon.
Pawn joined the two demons as they walked through the exit of the extravagant room, outside of which people were waiting to remove the shackles that bound the twins.
(Why did they even have shackles in the first place?) wondered Pawn as she entered the hallway.
“Oh right, just so you know,” the voice of the elegant demon suddenly returned, echoing through the heads of the three who had just exited the room.
“First, I’ll send the useless stuff that I don’t want over to the twin’s house later, second… I forcefully increased your rank a bit while you were sleeping, teehee~, so no quickly escaping via the barrier for you… welcome to the demon realm ‘Pawn,’” the demon’s voice said so, and then immediately disappeared as fast as it had arrived, but the meaning lingered.
(So if I want to leave the demon realm, I need to break out via some crazy amount of power, or be summoned out… as a demon…) Pawn’s only two feasible options became apparent as she walked in silence along with the twins.
