「ーーーAll hands, maximum alert! Magic users, standby to use magic immediately! ………wai-leader!?」
When Chloe fell due to an unsuspecting arrow, Dyne immediately orders his subordinates.
By the time he finished issuing his command, he was surprised to see Regulus suddenly speeding off, dashing at full speed towards the fallen Chloe.
「tch Out of my way.」
Regulus swings the greatsword into the air while clicking their tongue.
Thereupon, another surprise attack in the form of an arrow which flew from somewhere was cut in two.
Without knowing where the arrows where shot, Regulus intercepts the flying arrow by pinpointing the sound of it cutting through the wind, fully utilizing their battle-honed intuition.
After the second arrow, though Dyne still could not confirm any figure of the ambusher, he ascertained the origin point of it.
「At the top of the cave! Provide cover fire for the commander with magic!」
Following the instruction, ten or so knights proficient at magic immediately invoke their spell. Slower by a beat, some adventurers also fired their spells. The volley of spells lands one after another at the point where Dyne points out.
The nearby cliff were devastated as clouds of dust flutter about.
While praising Dyne inwardly, Regulus caught up to Chloe and hurriedly tries to examine her wound. The arrow had definitely pierced her chest but strangely enough, there was no blood to be found flowing from the stab mark.
「Pardon me.」
Expressing apology despite being aware of Chloe’s inability to respond in her unconscious state, Regulus tear open her clothes to confirm where the arrow had pierced.
And got surprised by the sight.
The arrow tip did not reach Chloe’s flesh at all. The reason is because it was stopped by a sheet of [ice] just before it managed to.
「…………I see, it’s [him].」
Leaning close to Chloe’s mouth, Regulus can hear her breathing normally. She seems to have fainted due to the arrow’s impact. Other than that, there is no immediate danger to her life.
Regulus stands up while carrying her on the left shoulder. She cannot be left behind and if the enemy knew she is still alive, she will be targeted again.
ーーーhyun
Another arrow shot from a different direction than the one just before.
But Regulus just brush it off with an unbelievably fast swing of their greatsword by using only one hand while carrying Chloe on the other.
「Defensive formation! Scatter the arrows with wind magic!」
When Dyne determined that there were multiple archers, he quickly issue instructions to buy time for locating those shooters. Volley of arrows is being fired from somewhere, aiming towards the knights but it got swept away by wind magic and flew wildly afterwards.
In the meantime, Regulus reached the knights with Chloe in tow.
「Leader, please don’t rush out all of a sudden.」
「My bad but left as it is, it will be dangerous for her.」
Taking the unconscious Chloe off the shoulder, Regulus entrusts her to a nearby soldier.
「Hey, is jou-chan safe?」
Barlhardt draws close to Regulus with that question.
「She’s only unconscious because of the arrow’s impact. After some healing, she should be able to wake up right away. More importantly…」
Regulus directs their line of sight towards the cave at the side of the mountain……
……To be precise, at the top of it.
Clouds of dust fluttering about from the earlier magic bombardment is dispersing. But faster than the dust cloud can settle down, some kind of figure could be seen moving about. The upper part of the cave looks like a wall from below but it has probably been dug out and cut to form a scaffold.
What emerged after the dust cloud settled is a lizard’s face.
Not the wild quadrupedal kind of lizard but the bipedal type armed with weapons and armors. After the first one shows up, similar figures appear one after another until more than twenty bipedal lizards are standing on top of the cave.
「I knew it the moment those arrows are fired. [Lizardman] huh.」
Alone, it would be designated as C-rank.
It is a magic beast far outstripping goblins in terms of ability but the most frightening aspect of them is their intelligence to fight as a cohesive group.
For experienced adventurers, if presented with a choice to fight a group of 10 ogres or 10 lizardmen, the latter is definitely the choice they do not want to contend with.
Lizardman’s coordinated combat prowess is such that even highly skilled adventurers can have the tables turned on them with the slightest bit of carelessness. Furthermore, lizardmen are capable of handling not only swords and shields but also spears along with bows and arrows. Even at a distance, one cannot neglect caution against them.
「This is absurd! How can there not be a report of lizardman from advanced reconnaissance?!」
「Calm down, Dyne. Unforeseen circumstances on the battlefield are normal. Besides, they are not only in front of us.」
While paying attention to the lizardman on top of the cave, Regulus scans the surroundings.
Starting with the first group, other lizardmen who had been hiding behind mountain boulders begins showing up one after another. Considering that arrows were flying from many directions, this is an obvious conclusion.
「This is not a good situation to keep our forces split in half.」
「………!! We will link up with the adventurers! All hands, move! !」
Accurately reading the lines behind the murmur of Regulus, Dyne loudly orders his subordinates to head towards where the adventurers are.
Sensing the Genryuu Knights’ intention, they too, move identically.
While both forces continue to close ranks, the lizardman’s number continues to rise. It is not clear where they were all hiding but in no time at all, the lizard numbers more than a hundred.
「Goddamnit, just where did this number of lizardman were hiding.」
Barlhardt’s words rings true for everyone around him.
Everyone but Regulus that is.
What comes to mind is a little bit different from the others.
『Even though the lizardmen numbers this much, why did they overlook goblins making a large settlement?』
While it may be true that the lizardman are more intelligent than goblins, that does not mean they possess intellect equal to humankind. At their root, the lizardman obeys the laws of the jungle. As such, they will not allow other species to form a large group within their territory.
With a hundred lizardman, extermination of goblins even with ten times that number is possible. That being the case, this joint expedition should have been facing a large group of lizardmen instead of goblins.
『This is considerably suspicious.』
Suddenly, Regulus felt a sense of déjà vu in this situation.
『Can it be [them]? But [she] could not have been here. ………If that is so, then [their] target is not [her] alone, isn’t it?』
Regulus tries to ruminate deeply upon it but did not have the time to reach an answer.
The lizardmen who emerged from their hiding place slid down the mountain. After landing on the ground, they rush towards the expedition members, causing tremors along the way.
「Oi Ryuuken, they’re also coming out of the cave!」
The spearman adventurer shouts out loud. Lizardmen are overflowing from the cave. The total number of Lizardmen at this point had already surpassed 200.
「………I’ll think about it later.」
The current priority is to break through the current situation.
Although the lizardmen has numeric superiority, in terms of fighting power, they are still inferior to the expedition members. It will not be as easy as dealing with goblins but they can handle it without any problems.
『Still, I can’t let my guard down.』
Regulus is convinced of something.
The [enemy’s] card has yet to be completely laid down.
When the last card is drawn, how should they cope with it?
Regulus fixes the grip on their greatsword so as to not let their guard down.
