Leveling Up My Husband to the Max - CH 40
In her previous life, she only exchanged a few indifferent letters before cutting contact with her family. At first, she couldn’t forgive her parents for putting her into the horrible, hellish life she was experiencing, and later her confidence fell so low that she couldn’t even think about contacting them again.
After the emperor carried out his schemes against the Eastern Lands, Amber’s father tried to save her, though he was too late. Since Viscount Liart was also under close scrutiny, he couldn’t save Amber, who had been labeled as a traitor.
‘In any case, I’ll have to… get in contact with my parents and older sister.’ Though she needed to contact them, Amber wasn’t confident that she’d be able to forgive her family.
Amber let out a deep sigh.
“Madam?”
Amber was shaken out of her dark thoughts at the sound of Kalix’s voice.
“Ah, I apologize. I was thinking of something else for a moment.” Amber did her best to force a smile on her face..
‘There’s still time for my parents later, let’s think about it later.’ For now she had to focus on getting ‘that’ from the esteemed daughter of the Freya family.
Kalix stayed quiet as he studied Amber’s forced smile.
“Please prepare the invitation this afternoon.”
Though Amber spoke, Kalix didn’t reply for a while, seemingly lost in thought.
‘Is he thinking of something else to say?’ Amber stayed still and waited for Kalix. His expression definitely looked like he had something to say.
“… Understood.” But only a short answer came.
“Yes, then I’ll be waiting.” Thinking that the conversation was over, Amber bowed her head and stood up from her seat.
“Madam?”
She was trying to leave the dining room when she heard Kalix’s bewildered voice from behind.
Amber turned around, confused by the tone of his voice, and saw Kalix who had half-stood from his chair as he stared at her with a dazed look on his face. “Ah, that was all that I needed from you. You can send the invitations to the Freya family yourself or give it to me, it doesn’t matter.”
“Well…”
“I’m sure Your Excellency must be busy, so please forget about my problems and continue with your work instead.” She was speaking from her consideration for Kalix.
‘It was already bad enough that he had to sit through the unexpected meal with me. I should make sure he doesn’t see my face more than he needs to.’ This wasn’t only her consideration for Kalix, it was consideration for herself as well. But strangely enough, Kalix seemed to be displeased.
“If I have need to meet with you later on, I will make sure to put in a request through the servants ahead of time.” At Kalix’s expression, Amber made sure to driver her point home, but strangely enough, the shadows on his face darkened more.
‘Did I say something wrong?’ She tried to think of what she might have said wrong, but nothing in particular felt off.
“Then, may I go now? I worry about the maid that I was taking care of.”
“…Understood. I shall do as you asked.” Kalix spoke as he sat back down on the chair.
“Ah, and.” Amber was about to open the dining room door to leave when she suddenly remembered something and turned her head around. “I have one more thing I need to ask of you.”
At the word ‘ask’, Kalix’s face immediately brightened again.”Of course, go ahead.” Kalix nodded his head.
Having obtained what she wanted, Amber left and searched for the butler. After informing the butler of what Kalix had said, Amber made her way to the private room where Jenia was resting.
