Leveling Up My Husband to the Max - CH 48
“Mistress, it is Heinreich.”
“Come in.” Amber spoke as she fixed her position on the chair.
Jenia, Heinreich, and two maids she was unfamiliar with entered.
Jenia smiled brightly the moment she saw Amber and greeted her with a deep bow. The two maids behind her were so nervous that their bow to Amber was stilted.
After Heinreich closed the door, Amber beckoned the maids over with a hand gesture. “So you’re the ones Jenia recommends. Your names?”
“My name is Sonia, this is Luna.” The black haired maid introduced herself as Sonia and the short brown haired companion as Luna.
Amber dug into her memories as she stared at the two maids. She recognized Sonia’s face as one doing busywork around the castle, but Luna wasn’t in her memories at all. ‘I wonder why?’ For Luna to not exist in Amber’s memories, she must have quit early on. Most maids wouldn’t lead the castle until retiring at old age, however, so the fact that she didn’t was considerably strange.
“Um, excuse me, Mistress…?” While Amber was silently pondering, Sonia cautiously spoke up.
“Ah, my apologies. I was thinking of something else a little earlier.” As Amber glanced at the two again, they stiffened with tension. It seemed they had not yet heard why Amber had them brought to her. “The reason I’ve brought you here today is to hire the two of you as my exclusive maids.”
As soon as the words left her mouth, the eyes of the two in front of her opened wide enough to pop out.
“E-Exclusive maids… us? But we’re…”
“I know. Just maids that work in laundry,” Amber calmly spoke. “But you are both recommended by Jenia, are you not? I believe in her judgment.”
The expressions of all three maids changed at Amber’s words. Jenia especially, had tears welling in her eyes as she dropped her head to hide her emotions.
“You will simply need to learn the duties of your new role. And don’t worry, I will consider hiring a separate lady-in-waiting later.”
At that, Sonia exhaled in relief. Once she hired a lady-in-waiting, their only tasking as exclusive maids would be to periodically attend to Amber and clean her room.
However, Luna still had a dark expression on her face.
“Is there a problem?”
After hesitating for a while, Luna finally responded to Amber’s question. “Truthfully… I was planning to quit this month.” The reason Amber couldn’t remember Luna was confirmed. She had quit almost as soon as Amber arrived at the castle. “My little brother suffers from a rare disease. His medication is expensive and requires frequent visits from his doctor, but I can’t afford that with my wage as a maid…”
Though her wage would increase as Amber’s exclusive maid, it would still be insufficient in covering the costs for her little brother’s medical costs.
“Since it’s like that, I was planning to find a job that makes more money… And as a maid, I have to reside in the castle. I’m worried about leaving my little brother at home alone.”
For a commoner woman, there weren’t many jobs she could find that would make good money aside from being a maid. For her to quit her current position to find something that would bring in more money meant that she was determined to find a job that would cause enough hardship and suffering to eat away at her lifespan. Furthermore, she would need to endure even more difficulties after leaving the castle.
“Heinreich.” Amber quietly studied Luna before speaking again. “Have the doctor of the castle attend Luna’s little brother.”
“Understood.” Understanding Amber’s intentions, Heinreich bowed his head right away.
“And from now on, I shall take care of your brother’s medication fees. You will also be given two days off every week to visit home. Will that be enough for you to agree to be my exclusive maid?” Amber asked Luna.
“…Excuse me?” All Luna could do was blink her eyes in disbelief.
“His medical feels will come from my privy purse, you won’t need to worry.” She smiled at the dazed Luna. “Now, will you be able to work as my exclusive maid?”
“Y-Yes, I can. I mean, I will!” Luna hurriedly bowed her head and spoke. “Thank you so, so much, Madam. I shall never forget this generosity.” Luna’s face was filled with relief at the knowledge that she wouldn’t have to leave and happiness that her little brother’s life was saved.
“Though I cannot give you the same days off, Sonia, I will grant you anything you wish separately.”
Sonia’s face was filled with happiness as well. But the two maids suddenly became worried at the same time.
“Why are you going this far for us…” Sonia asked with a careful tone. To bring in the castle’s doctor to take care of the maid’s family member… Even a generous noble family wouldn’t go this far.
“Because I am asking you to do something equally as difficult.” Amber spoke honestly. “I will not mince words here. There will be many difficulties as my personal maids.”
Bella’s close aides in particular would direct their bullying to them.
