Three days later, Li Chuntao unexpectedly found herself at the hospital where her fiance was working. The word felt foreign to her as the sudden turn of events between her and Shen Zichen still seemed like a dream, it made her feel giddy though she tried to calm herself.
Dressed in a fitted pair of jeans and a loose white blouse, she was dressed as her true self and not as Ying. This time, she decided that ‘Ying’ should be seen as someone whom others wouldn’t dare to offend. She was tired of pretending as the gentle Ying that they were accustomed to.
As usual, Yu Lou and Su Ling were walking a couple of meters behind her as she made her way towards Shen Zichen’s office. As she opened the door, she suddenly stopped when she saw a nurse inside her fiance’s office, shamelessly sniffing the scarf Li Chuntao remembered gifting Shen Zichen years ago.
She raised a brow, thinking how ridiculous it was for other women to act like this around Shen Zichen. She cleared her thought, trying to gauge the woman’s reaction, who had immediately jumped back, looking at Li Chuntao with wide eyes when she noticed her presence.
There was a hint of blush on her face as she tried to calm her racing heartbeat.
‘Shit.’ She thought. She wondered if Li Chuntao saw what she was doing inside Doctor Shen’s office.
“I’m looking for Doctor Shen,” Li Chuntao paused and read the name of the nurse of her name tag, “Miss Chen.”
She stated her business and sauntered inside the room and sat on the opposite chair across Shen Zichen’s desk. She was here because she and Zichen planned to choose the rings for their wedding ceremony that weekend. Shen Zichen called her to meet him here after he was done with work today so they could go together.
“Doctor Shen is still doing his rounds. You can wait here, Miss Li,” Chen Ruqing awkwardly replied and excused herself from Li Chuntao, sprinting out of Shen Zichen’s office.
Li Chuntao scoffed inwardly. Did Shen Zichen even realize how women flocked around him trying to get his attention?
The corridor outside was practically deserted, something Li Chuntao found so rare, especially for a busy place like this hospital. She looked around and stifled a yawn as she waited for Shen Zichen to arrive. They agreed to meet at five in the afternoon and she arrived half an hour earlier.
The room was sectioned into two with curtains. The wall was painted with cool hues of blue while the curtain dividing the room was in deep navy blue color. Li Chuntao assumed that the other part was her fiance’s examination area for his patients.
Her eyes then landed on the huge bookshelf installed on the wall across her. It was filled with medical journals and awards Shen Zichen had earned over the years of his career as a surgeon.
On her fiance’s desk was a pile of paperwork that needed Shen Zichen’s attention and a picture frame of his family.
“Sorry, I didn’t expect you to arrive early,” he told her as he checked the time on his wristwatch before placing a kiss on her forehead. He then moved around the desk to sit on his own chair, placing the stack of patient’s records on his desk.
“That’s a lot of patients you have there,” Li Chuntao commented. She didn’t dare to take one and read what he was up to. It was against her ethics to poke her nose into her fellow doctor’s business without their consent.
Shen Zichen sighed dejectedly and swiped his face with his hand. He regretted not being able to help Li Chuntao and Zheng Yue much with the wedding preparations because of his busy schedule these days.
It was his fault anyway, because he hadn’t really given it a thought when he decided to pursue Li Chuntao, leaving his responsibilities to his peers. He was lucky the hospital director valued his skills or else he might’ve been canned by now.
“En, that’s because I took a lot of offs last month and the other doctors had to sub on me,” he responded. “Now the director wants me to oversee these surgeries before they approve my request for two weeks of absence.”
It was because, after their wedding, Shen Zichen decided to spend some time with his newly wedded wife and to start mending the bonds he had ruined because of his mistakes and slow wit.
Li Chuntao chewed her lower lip and took a peak on his tired face. Of course, she understood what Shen Zichen had been doing for the past month. Wasn’t he busy chasing after her, waiting outside her door, and persistently following her wherever she was going?
“Sorry, Zichen. I didn’t know that my actions would affect your work. I should have realized this sooner.” She said in a low voice. She felt guilty for causing him trouble at work although she once wondered how Shen Zichen had so much free time following her around when she knew he was also busy here at the hospital.
Shen Zichen stared at her for a while before pulling himself back on his feet and moved to the other guest’s chair next to her. He took her hands into his and marveled that soon, she would be wearing the ring that sealed the promise of forever with him. He couldn’t wait to have her as his wife.
“Chuntao, none of it was your fault. It’s me who decided to ditch my work to follow you around like a lost puppy.” His lips curling up while Li Chuntao chuckled at his poor attempt to humor her.
“I would do it even if I lost my position here. The patients are safe in the hands of the other doctors here, so I didn’t need worry about them too much. I worry about you.” His hand reached up and twirled the long strands of her hair between his fingers before placing a chaste kiss on it. “I worry that I might have lost you for good.”
Li Chuntao hummed but didn’t say anything. It was enough for her now to know that he was trying to win her trust back. With a few more days to wait, their wedding was approaching too fast.
The phone on his desk rang and Shen Zichen was forced to release her hand to answer it. It was the same director he was talking about earlier, who suddenly wanted to see him right now.
“Alright, I’ll be there, Dr. Zhao.” Shen Zichen said to the person on the other end of the line before ending the call. He then turned to Li Chuntao with a sorry expression on her face.
“The director wants a word with me. Is it alright if I leave you here for a while? I’ll be back before five,” He told her apologetically.
Li Chuntao nodded as she had arrived earlier than planned anyway.
“Go, I’ll just buy something to drink while you are gone. The faster you talk to your director, the faster you’ll be able to come back to me.” She said and winked at him.
Shen Zichen’s face lit up and kissed her cheek before bolting outside the room to meet the hospital director, leaving Li Chuntao laughing at his eagerness to leave with her.
