Li Chuntao clung to her husband, fearing that all this was just another trick of her mind. Feeling his presence here with her was enough to ensure herself that she really wasn’t deluding herself. She held him in a tight embrace.
The knowledge of not being alone washed away the worries in her heart and now that they were expecting a new baby, she couldn’t be happier. She foolishly thought that after Ying’s death, she could never be happy again in this life. How wrong she was!
She ignored the fact that she was bare beneath the hospital gown she was wearing and how she suddenly felt dizzy from the sudden change of her position.
From the way Shen Zichen was holding her, she knew that she’d given him a good scare last night when she fell into the pond. Had she known about her pregnancy, Li Chuntao wouldn’t have dared to lure Yao Qigang while she was alone.
“I’m so sorry, Zichen.” She repeated. She’d been foolish for putting her life on the line for the sake of seeking revenge.
A few moments later, the door opened before she heard her Auntie Yue’s glee from seeing that she was finally awake.
“Oh, Chuntao! I’m so glad you’re awake. Has Zichen told you about the good news?” Her aunt beamed her a wide smile, clearly excited about their baby.
Zheng Yue practically pulled her away from Shen Zichen’s embrace and pulled her into a tight hug.
“Yes he did. I’m so sorry for making you and Uncle worry.” She knew she should apologize for her recklessness. She promised to be careful next time.
Zheng Yue pulled away and held both sides of Li Chuntao’s face.
“We were so worried about you. But do you know that because of what happened last night, we finally found the person who plotted to kill Ying?” The older woman started to shed tears at the thought of Ying’s death.
It was still painful for all of them, since none were ready to lose Ying yet and Li Chuntao felt guilty for keeping her Auntie Yue in the dark about her plans to lure Yao Qigang out.
Zheng Yue didn’t even know that she and her Uncle Yuren already knew the truth about Ying’s death. As to why her uncle never mentioned it to her aunt, Li Chuntao wasn’t too sure.
“He started to get hysterical at the precinct, saying Ying shouldn’t have survived that accident, and that he took matters into his own hands to make sure Ying wouldn’t be able to leave her car.”
Li Chuntao started to cry with her aunt while Shen Zichen clenched his fists, remembering how Li Xiuying had suffered. The report said that the locks of the car doors had been tampered with, trapping Li Xiuying and Song Zexi inside. They should’ve sunk with the wrecked car, but somehow, Li Xiuying managed to break the glass, pulling herself and Song Zexi out of the sinking wreckage.
“The police are still trying to get a coherent statement from him, but we’ll do our best to keep him behind bars. We’ll get to the bottom of it, alright?” Zheng Yue pulled her niece to her chest and tried to blink her tears away, though she failed.
“Please, Chuntao. You have to be careful until we’re sure it’s safe. We don’t know if he was the only one who plotted against your sister. Now that you are pregnant, listen to your husband, and don’t do reckless things. As for your work at the company, you have to take time off. You now have a family you need to take care of too.”
Li Chuntao had to stay for another day before the doctor allowed her to go home with her husband. The drive back to Shen Zichen’s apartment was silent. They should be celebrating her pregnancy, but the fact that Yao Qigang had publicized his involvement in Li Xiuying’s accident ruined the mood of the couple.
Li Chuntao was feeling lost and weak as she sat in the car with Shen Zichen. Another car was following behind them, no doubt it was Su Ling and Song Zexi. Ever since Song Zexi was discharged from the hospital, she took the initiative to care for Li Chuntao’s needs, just like how she took care of her previous mistress.
As if sensing her distress, Shen Zichen held her hand with one hand, while his other hand was on the steering wheel, his focus still on the road.
“Don’t overthink, Chuntao. Everything will be fine.” He told her. They just need to be more careful, now that she was carrying a precious life.
When they finally pulled up at the parking slot reserved for him, Li Chuntao let her husband lead her to the elevator with her bodyguards following closely after them. She was kinda amused at how her husband was overly attentive to her, worrying too much that she would get dizzy again and hurt herself.
As soon as they got home, Li Chuntao spent the rest of the day sleeping, while Shen Zichen busied himself making phone calls to adjust his work schedule at the hospital. Li Chuntao hadn’t come to a decision yet about his suggestion to migrate overseas, after the problems here were settled.
It wouldn’t be easy for the two of them, but Shen Zichen knew that somehow, Li Chuntao would want to lead a peaceful life away from public scrutiny. Somewhere she could be herself and not worry about what people would think of her.
Shen Zichen didn’t mind sacrificing his life and his career here to follow her wherever she wanted to be, even if it meant not seeing his own family for a long time.
He went back to the master bedroom and saw Li Chuntao sleeping peacefully on their bed. His fingers running gently on her thick mane while pondering how they would deal with such a change in their life.
A baby…
Shen Zichen couldn’t stop the smile that spread on his lips as he placed a kiss on Li Chuntaos head. They never discussed having children, but luckily, she got pregnant just months after their wedding. The fact that she was carrying his child brought indescribable happiness to him.
Li Chuntao stilled in her sleep, but didn’t wake up. This was one of those rare times Shen Zichen had seen her unguarded and vulnerable. Usually, her face was unreadable, not allowing anyone to perceive what she was thinking. Unlike her twin sister, Li Chuntao didn’t wear her heart on her sleeve.
His hand moved to massage her belly, aware that he wouldn’t be able to feel their baby yet as it was too early. Li Chuntao rolled on her side, facing him and cracked an eye open.
“Hey…” Her eyes sighting the impending night that was about to consume the sky with its darkness.
Shen Zichen leaned forward and kissed her nose. “Slept well?”
