As she looked at her husband, she didn’t think that Meng Huan had treated her badly during those days they were together. In fact, Meng Huan was an attentive husband, especially when they found out that she was carrying a child.
He worked harder than before, always trying to make ends meet, though it had never been enough. For Gu Changge, he would never be enough. Yet, as she looked at Meng Huan right now, she realized that she was pitiful compared to him.
It seemed that the husband and son she abandoned were faring well without her. They weren’t dressed shabbily like before, when they couldn’t even afford to buy new clothes for a new season.
“I don’t need your pity, Meng Huan.” She sneered at him, making her sister-in-law snap back at her.
“You still look down on my brother? Look who’s talking, Gu Changge! The bitch who abandoned her family to go to the capital and spread her legs for other men who weren’t even her husband!”
“Lan’er!” Meng Huan was surprised by his sister’s outburst, but Meng Lan didn’t want to shut her mouth.
“What?! Brother, why would you still defend this shameless woman? Wasn’t she the one who caused us trouble? Wasn’t she the one who left you and Lin Lin to die? She didn’t even bother to check on you even after she was earning money.”
Meng Lan then glared fiercely at Lin Meirong.
“I’m not as kind as my brother, Gu Changge.” Meng Lan pulled out the divorce papers her brother had prepared earlier. He was ready to legally ask for his freedom and the sole custody of their son from his wife. However, the moment he heard the news that Gu Changge’s illness was terminal, he couldn’t bring it to himself to ask for a divorce.
“Please give my brother his freedom back. He and Lin Lin don’t want you in their lives anymore. Since you are dying, why don’t you try to do a good thing before you go? Who knows, maybe the deities above will pity you and give you a painless death.”
Meng Lan’s words were so filled with venom, it had caught her brother off guard. Lin Lin who was still in the arms of his father only stared at the sick woman on the hospital bed with confusion before it dawned to him that this woman was the mother her Auntie Lan was talking about before.
“Lin Lin doesn’t have a mother. Lin Lin doesn’t want to have a mother.”
His words silenced the three adults. Neither of the Meng siblings had thought that the boy would say such a thing to the mother who abandoned him.
Lin Meirong sucked in a deep breath and realized how painful it was for her to even breathe. Her chest burned with pain and whether it was because of her sickness or because of Lin Lin’s words, she didn’t know.
Children, especially infants, need their mothers. So where was she when Lin Lin had been stricken with an illness, one so severe that Meng Huan didn’t even know if he would be able to survive or not. If it wasn’t for ‘Li Xiuying’s’ help, Lin Lin would have been dead by now.
“You heard what Lin Lin said. For once, Gu Changge, don’t be a selfish bitch and give my brother his freedom.” Meng Lan said with annoyance. If her brother couldn’t steel himself to ask for it, she would have to force Gu Changge to sign the damned divorce papers then.
Lin Meirong let out a low laugh. Give him back his freedom? Would he really be free from her after she signed their divorce papers? This man, who loved her deeply, the same man she abandoned because of her selfishness.
“Then give it to me. Quick.” She told Meng Lan.
Meng Huan could only watch as his sister presented the divorce papers and how Gu Changge ended their seven years of marriage just like that. No trace of remorse for being absent during the last five.
“Done. Now, are you satisfied? You got the damn freedom you wanted, so please do me a favor and don’t bother to show yourselves to me in the future.” Lin Meirong sneered at them, while Meng Lan chuckled in return.
“It’s not like we will be able to see you alive anyway.”
Meng Lan didn’t waste her time and took her nephew from her brother and stepped out of the hospital room.
“What else do you want?” Lin Meirong looked away, refusing to meet his gaze. Hadn’t she suffered enough humiliation for today? The last thing she wanted to see or hear was her ex-husband’s pity.
“Changge, I’m sorry.” She heard Meng Huan say. She didn’t understand why he was the one who was apologizing, when she was the one who abandoned him and put a green hat over his head.
“I didn’t wrong you, did I? I loved you and tried my best to become a good husband to you and a good father to Lin Lin. I’m sorry if I couldn’t give you the life you’ve always wanted back then. I’m sorry I couldn’t make you happy, but Lan’er is right.”
Lin Meirong lifted her head to look at his face. She was surprised to see that there was no hatred or animosity reflected in his eyes when he looked at her. He forgave her?
“I forgive you, Changge. I know Lan’er would disagree with me, but I forgive you. Perhaps, this is my way of releasing myself from the past. Farewell, Changge. Thank you for bringing Lin Lin into my life. He’s the most precious thing you’ve given to me. I’ll take care of him, so, you don’t need to worry.”
