Living With An Immortal Dragon Soul - Chapter 26 First Days Of School
The day soon came to an end when the joint squad of Night Serpent’s Eyes and villagers returned with a few hunted creatures they were surprised but unexpectedly not frightened by the sight of the Naga siblings.
The inhabitants of this village were very curious even to the point that some children wanted to touch Gabriel’s tail. He hesitantly allowed it but wasn’t very happy with it.
Natalie on the other hand didn’t allow them to touch her because she did, like always, not wear anything. It was a rare moment when she was embarrassed. Normally she had a much higher tolerance level when it came to feeling ashamed than most other people but to be touched while being naked was obviously to much for her therefore she slithered away.
Many of the children didn’t know the concept of shame yet and they tried to follow her to touch her scaly lower body.
While some villagers were preparing for the dinner the rest of all the people who were present were having a laugh because the children didn’t seem to give up soon and chased Natalie around the village for quite some time. Ssssssstop following me” she exclaimed while zigzagging between some trees.
Ah, I see, when she becomes agitated she can’t focus enough to speak without her Naga accent.’
Natalie!” I shouted while gesturing to her that she should come to me.
When she arrived I allowed the children to play a little bit with my second generation Racer Lizards and Cham. Some started to play hide and seek with Cham whereas the majority decided to play catch with Leroy, Lisa and Liana. They were very young and wouldn’t easily hurt the children unless I explicitly ordered them to but I wanted to train their agility and if it was in such a playful and fun way then why shouldn’t I allow it?
Lincoln, the fourth young Racer Lizard on the other wasn’t fast enough for this game. Some of the children might have even been able to catch it if they worked together.
I really hope that he will grow stronger in the future’ I thought but I felt delighted that at least he had found someone who was treating him very good. Theresa had started liking the weak little lizard as soon as it was born and over time she was just as close to him as he was to me although I was his master and she was only a friend. Lincoln really liked it to stay by her side. Whenever he had the chance he would make his way up to her shoulders and remain there looking around to scan the surroundings.
This scene always looked adorable and it only intensified when Theresa started to wear Lincoln as a short scarf or necklace whenever he felt tired. His three siblings seemed to be a little envious of this development and sometimes they looked at me in a way that screamed Me too’. Although I found it to be slightly embarrassing I sometimes allowed them to remain sitting on my shoulders. When I thought about it this wasn’t the first time that my familiars sat on my shoulders. Cham did once do that while we were still travelling.
The evening was very peaceful and only interrupted by Natalie who was once again being chased around by some other children. After we had eaten our fill everyone except for the guards around the village went to sleep. I had assigned two shifts who were to stand guard around the village during the night to safeguard against any possible enemies.
While I slowly descended into sleep I wondered how this school in this new world would be different from my old schools. I was very fond of the memories of my old schools. There weren’t many things that I didn’t dislike in my past world but to study was one thing that always caught my attention.
While I was deep in thought, pondering what I will see and how it compares to my schools of the past, I only heard Drake’s voice in my head what’s this lunch package you’re thinking about right now?’ and with a smile on my face I discarded any excess thoughts and went to sleep.
The next day I felt like I was in my old world again: After I woke up I tried to stay in bed to relax for a while but Theresa and the village elder shouted that I’d be late if I didn’t hurry up and get ready now.
When I finally stood up and readied myself to go to school my body moved very hesitantly because Drake voiced his objection to leave without a wondrous lunch package’. Therefore I had to hastily prepare something to eat before making my way to the city hall where the school was located. I would’ve been too late but fortunately the village elder met with a few members of the Night Serpent Clan before we officially walked towards the classroom. In it there were lots of children and the situation was kind of awkward since there were many people who were over twenty years of age who had yet to learn the basics of reading, writing and mathematics.
The first lesson of today was mathematics. In essence it was quite simple because it was at most junior high level. The only problem it caused for me was to quickly learn the numbers by heart. In essence it was the same as in my old world: there were numbers which were constructed by the digits ranging from zero to ten. The meaning was the same but the appearance of each number looked different. Theresa and I were having the least problems because she did already know such basic level stuff and I was quite fast when it came to linking new content with previously acquired knowledge. On the other hand there were many of our clan who were very troubled and had to ask the children to help them. It was a funny scene seeing some of my trained Night Serpent’s Eyes struggling to keep up with children.
Later on we had arts and to start the class our artistry teacher showed us his most recently finished products. They were two jetblack identical daggers.
When he showed them to everybody and explained what was hard about the crafting he bent the knee and offered me my freshly finished obsidian twin daggers. The rest of this class was spent carving wood into sculptures. This time my clansmen could demonstrate their abilities and left many of the children stunned by showing them their carving skills. It was obvious that their skill with a knife was quite extraordinary.
The last two hours of today was the written language of this country but since I have already read in a book back in the Night Serpent Clan’s village I was quite confident in these skills.
The class started and all of us opened our book.
What the hell?”
What’s the matter, Val?’
Valentinus, please mind your language, there are children present!”
Of course! Just one question? What language is this?”
Why can’t I read it? I could read the other one in the magic book…’
Why do you ask? It is the universal language which is spoken and written everywhere from the all human empire in the south up to the demihuman and mixed lands in the north. Even in some places overseas will you find this language.” I didn’t think I would trigger such a speech by wondering why I can’t read it but if this was the case then the magic books must be the irregularity.
Alright then, let’s get started” I exclaimed before beginning to acquire this new language.
