Living With An Immortal Dragon Soul - Chapter 31 A Day Off
This night was different from most others. Usually we would hear the noises from many familiars from the clan. It had been ages since I was lying in bed only to listen to the quiet surroundings of a peaceful civilization. Even in my past life this was nothing more than wishful thinking. You could always hear the factories and thousands of people creating a myriad of noises.
Everyone has a slightly different definition of luxury. For me who has lived a life on an overcrowded dying planet just lying in bed and hearing the rhythmic drops of rain splashing on the roof above our heads was a luxurious lullaby to which I slowly drifted from consciousness to a peaceful sleep.
After waking up I wanted to find out more about this town the canyon and the cursed witches but alas my movements were somehow impeded. I obviously didn’t utilize my full strength just to jump out of bed or I might as well crash through a wall but my normal human strength wasn’t enough to get up easily. Furthermore when I opened my eyes everything was clouded by a dark brown curtain.
Since I didn’t feel any danger I remained in this position and simply focused to activate to see through Little Racer’s eyes.
Some things never change’ I thought while trying not to giggle because I knew now why it was so hard to move. Theresa had moved and her right leg was locked around my legs while a part of her upper body was lying on my chest and impeding my movements. I also realized now what caused my sight to be miserable at the moment. Her voluminous long hair wasn’t flowing down her shoulders as usual but was instead positioned over my head.
Drake wondered how the hell did she manage to reach such a weird position while she was asleep’
I answered using my thoughts I have no clue! This was one of the mysteries even my old world wasn’t able to solve’ I wanted to go on but then a sudden movement interrupted the line of sight and I had to cancel the <familiar’s vision=””>.
hahaha, Indeed some things never change” I muttered joyfully under my breath while I was looking up the bed from the side since I was pushed out of it seconds ago by a still sleeping Theresa.
While I adorned my leather armour Mercy and Theresa’s Direwolves woke up. My familiars were all wide awake as soon as I had used the <familiar’s vision=””>.
A few second later Theresa was awoken by Lincoln who positioned himself around her neck once more and started licking her face. She seemed to be ticklish because she jumped up as soon as his tongue reached her neck.
Meanwhile I opened a window to be greeted by the late morning sun and the songs of a few birds, some of which I shot down immediately to feed my familiars. Liz and little Racer immediately bolted out and retrieved my prey. I took out the throwing knives that were embedded in the birds’ bodies before allowing them to pounce on the meat.
Mercy seemed a little unhappy but this was probably due to the fact that he always had a hint of grumpiness in the mornings.
After all of us were finally wide awake we discussed what the plans for today would consist of. First of there is the point of information gathering. And secondly we should earn some money. We could divide the tasks like this: Mercy, since you have the outer appearance of an extremely strong and hardworking man it would be best for you to find a job for today. Bambi can accompany you if the job includes carrying heavy wares. Theresa and on the other hand might be better suited for information gathering. Any objections or additions?”
I have one” said Theresa I have mentioned it yesterday already. We might be able to establish a new trade route directly through our village. This way we could earn some extra money in the long term and would rarely be short on wares if merchants visited us frequently”
Granted” I said try to find some merchants or people who are most likely to interact with the merchants who come here a lot.” I paused for a moment
Oh, and take your familiars with you to show that we are able to guarantee the safety on our perimeters of the trade route. Fine then, see you again at sunset. I will gather some intelligence now and if I have enough spare time I’ll go hunting to get us some nice dinner for today.”
With these words this meeting was concluded and everyone went their own ways.
I started downstairs. Since the innkeeper and I were drinking buddies the previous evening he was easily to talk to. I had previously thought that he has already told me everything he knew but he continued blabbering on and on about the two witches. Most of the time it wasn’t important but it was quite interesting when he got to their fighting styles. He said that the Dark Elf used a pretty common combat technique amongst Dark Elfs. She employed a close quarters dagger technique accompanied by her highly proficient darkness elemental spells. In short she was a Nightblade, an assassin who has mastered the darkness to such an extent that it would accompany them wherever they went. The High Elf on the other hand was a sorceress of the purest caliber. She fought with magic alone and had seemingly endless mana. She used Light magic and from the stories the innkeeper told me it seemed like her magic was comparable to Maverick’s with the exception of of course.
After the inn I walked around the village and sharpened my senses to gather information. I strolled around leisurely and noticed that Theresa has already worked deligently. Some merchants were talking amongst themselves about the benefits of a possible new trade route. Her old man has definitely taught her to work hard although she was a leader’s daughter and could have commanded others to work for her.
On the other hand there was no trace of Mercy. It seemed like he had found a job because he was nowhere to be seen on the street. This wasn’t surprising because strong young men could be used in many workplaces since there was not much machinery and advanced technology and therefore muscles defined the market.
I talked to many others but they didn’t know much and it was basically the same information I got from the innkeeper. Therefore I walked in the direction of the canyon and looked in its direction from afar while standing on a hill. It looked peaceful but my senses weren’t easy to fool. Right in front of the canyon there could be seen two spheres, or rather they couldn’t be seen. One was so blindingly bright that one would only see a bright light and the other was the complete opposite it seemed to swallow everything in its surroundings including the light.
After watching this spectacle for a while I realized that the two spheres were moving slightly. From this distance it didn’t seem like much but these spheres seemed to be moving up to ten metres in the blink of an eye.
On my way to return to the inn I saw some rather plain looking deer which dwarfed in comparison to Bambi. I instantly pierced my throwing knives through the temples of one of them while my Racer Lizards tore an other one apart. Cham on the other hand didn’t appear to be very hungry. It was still wrapped around my neck like a scarf.
On my way towards the inn I heard a woman screaming and bolted in that direction to prevent any crime or accident that might befall the the damsel in distress.
When I arrived at the origin of the scream Mercy was already there but he didn’t seem that flustered, he actually appeared to be unite amused. Meanwhile the woman shouted again but this time I could clearly understand her whimpering voice Take them away” she said they will eat us all”
At first I didn’t have a clue who she referred to with they” but it hit me when Drake suggested that we look in the corner behind the chair the woman had placed herself upon.
Mercy and I stared at each other for a moment and roared with laughter shortly after because we saw the tiny mice that were moving around in the corner and were munching on a dropped piece of bread.
After a few seconds passed and the woman was still stubbornly clutching her chair I ordered Cham get them” and Cham took off immediately. He vanished midair and soon after every single mouse in this house was punctured by two sharp needle like teeth.
Meanwhile I asked Mercy what job he took on for today.
I was helping a lumberjack out in the nearby woods.” he said It’s honest work and also a good training. He even paid me one silver because he didn’t have to rent a carriage to bring the trees back to the village to sell the wood and invited us to eat with him today. Oh, I almost forgot to mention: This lady is his wife. He actually warned me that she is frightened way too easily.” he chuckled and so did I.
After that I asked him were his employer was now. Mercy’s answer was that he had to sell the wood now since it was always in high demand.
Indeed, it is” A deep voice suddenly emerged and when we turned around I was surprised to see this mountain formed of muscles could actually talk.
This man was masculinity come to life. He dwarfed Mercy’s and my well formed bodies easily. He was over two metres tall and his bulging arms carried two giant axes most humans wouldn’t be able to lift. His mouth that was covered by a thick beard had currently a small piece of bread in it which caused his voice to be muffled somewhat but its volume was still impressive. I couldn’t imagine how loud this woman and the lumberjack might be if they shouted at each other.
While Mercy started introducing me to the giant, Cham finished my order and concluded exterminating the vermin. After that the woman came down from her chair, albeit cautiously.
