Lord of The Mysterious Realms - Chapter 3: The Curse and Clear Water
“Sir, may I ask how to use my ability, healing might be able to help somewhat?”
Jenkins then remembered what he had just acquired, only magic can fight magic, this rule also works in this world, right?
“In the outside world, our ability depends on the release of our own [spirits], while in the mysterious realms we only need to activate it mentally, but accordingly an ability can only be used once in a [mysterious realm] adventure.”
After saying that, Barnard stretched out his own rough hands and while trembling, picked up the golden bowl closest to him.
“I have to drink it?”
It was unknown whether he said this to Jenkins or to the black-robed man.
A bead of sweat slid down from the middle-aged man’s temple , dripping clearly before Jenkins’ eyes onto the front of his black tunic.
“Boy, if I die this time with a sip, and you are lucky enough to walk out then go directly to the church of [Moon of No Light] to inform them of my death. By the way, my full name is Verne Shrebin Barnard.”
“Sir, we will both live.”
Jenkins gulped, although now is not the time when he will face the choice of fate, but in this situation he at least have to say something:
“Otherwise, it’s better if I drink first. You have more experience than I do and will be able to get more information through my results.” His suggestion was that the odds of choosing one out of ten was not much different from choosing one out of nine .
“Oh, boy, thanks for your care but I still haven’t fallen that low that I will let a little rookie scout for me.”
The two of them did not even mentioned the idea of attacking the black robed man because the other party was just sitting in front of both and his aura have already made their hands and feet go numb,
He doesn’t even need to stretch out a finger to finish them both.
Without saying anything more, Barnard used his left hand to wipe away the fine beads of sweat from his forehead. With the bowl in his right hand he tilted his head and drank from the bowl .
Jenkins breathed heavily, he was not sure if it was because of the thin air in the unventilated room or because his heart was beating too fast, he had the same feeling as the time when the card drawn was with a golden back.
After a moment of silence, Barnard let out a sigh of relief and lowered the golden bowl on table.
“Sir, are you okay?”
Even though Jenkins knew that it was his turn next, he still heaved a sigh of relief for Barnard.
Barnard turned his head stiffly with a dry smile on his scruffy face, then pointed to his throat and waved his hand signalling that he can’t speak.
There is no mirror nearby so Jenkins couldn’t see the expression on his face at the moment. But he was sure that his face should be very pale with his mouth open.
Licking his chapped lips, Jenkin reached into his pocket and and pulled out several folded newspapers, and a badly worn fountain pen from his right pocket.
The former was brought out of his home and was intended to be shredded and thrown into someone else’s yard, and the later was a gift from old Williams when the real Jenkins was still alive. Although the original owner of Jenkins’ body hated studying extremely, he still cherished his family very much.
Barnard immediately understood what Jenkins meant, he took the pen and paper but did not dare to use the table,he simply wrote on the palm of his hand .
“It’s okay, it’s just an ordinary curse, After we go out there will be dedicated staff in the church to help me”
This was the only good news that Jenkins learned so far. But since this is a curse not an injury his healing abilities may not come in handy anymore.
It should be his turn next, Barnard sat aside without urging him.
The black-robed man across the street meant that there is a high probability that both of them have to drink it, so even if Barnard drank another bowl again,it would be completely useless.
Jenkins’ chest rose and fell violently, and various pictures of stuff that happened after not even one hour of crossing over came to his mind. Is it a blessing or a curse? Only time will tell.
He raised his head and tried hard to see the face under of the figure who was sitting opposite to him , but the hood was like a black hole that absorbed all the light from the candles.
After looking at it for a long time Jenkins also seemed to develop a slight ringing in his ears.
He looked at the nine remaining gold bowls on the dirty round table and said “Mr. Barnard, my full name is Jenkins Ridgeport-William, and I live at 7 Maidenhaven Lane in the Sabine district.”
After that, regardless of the reaction of the middle-aged man,he got up, picked up the bowl closest to the black robed man and drank from it directly.
His heart was pumping plasma at the maximum power and the fast flowing blood caused Jenkins’ face to go red, and the cold sensation in his limbs made unable to even feel the weirdness of the touch in his hands.
The odourless liquid first touched his lips then Jenkins felt as if his hands were sending all the liquid into his mouth uncontrollably. Now he knew from where did Barnard’s heroic actions came from.
When all the liquid disappeared in his mouth, he put the bowl back on the table with bewildered eyes and sat down again.
“What should I do now?”
He asked in his heart before it dawned on him that he survived.
Barnard immediately pushed over the newspaper with the words on it, “How do you feel?”
“Not bad it’s like… no, I really just drank half a bowl of water.”
I didn’t expect the revolving lantern to appear and end up in such a anticlimactic way Jenkins thought but he still thanked the gods and buddhas in his heart.
(TN: Soumatou(走馬灯) or revolving lantern is often related to flashback phenomenon before death according to asian superstition…..eh don’t I live in asia too why, don’t I know that.)
It was also at this point that he recalled that this body of his now believes in the [Inheritance Sage] which symbolises the tenth month of the year. The priesthood of this righteous god includes knowledge, books, hidden secrets, exploration, inheritance, etc..
Although the old Williams was only a small businessman, he firmly believed that knowledge changes fate, so the whole William family is a believer of this deity.
“May the [Inheritance Sage] bless you, and your brilliance illuminate the path of mankind.”He recited in his heart.
The normal prayer process should also include a set of corresponding hand gestures, but the not-so-stoic Jenkins original had a very vague impression of this.
The two men each drank a bowl, but nothing changed, and the black-robed man still sat there making it completely impossible to see through.
“Can we go now?” Jenkins did not act himself, but once again asked the experienced Mr. Barnard.
The man also looked a little dazed, as he could not speakhe used hand gesture to signal Jenkins not to move, and then tried to stand up himself.
Obviously nothing happened when Jenkins stood up to fetch the gold bowl, but at the moment Barnard seemed to be crushed by a hundred-pound weight and fell back heavily on the wooden stake.
With a slight sound a crack immediately appeared on the side of the stake, and Jenkins was now worried about Mr. Barnard’s backside.
“Is everything okay?”
He asked out before it occurred to him that it was a silly question.
Barnard, whose face was red with pain, gritted his teeth and shook his head; fortunately he could not make a sound now, or Jenkins feared he would have roared out.
