- 78 UNCLE CLIFF AND I HAVE A SECRE
While they are almost finished arranging the foods, the hotel staffs were silently observing the three. No one dared to speak but were just pretending not to see or hear anything. But deep down, all of them were amused as they hear the child and the man’s conversation. And they stole glances on the child and the man.
One of them remembered the hot rumor on social media regarding Clifford Briggs and the child and the woman he was with. And the picture confirmed true.
‘It is indeed them! But why’s the child calling him uncle instead of daddy? Or is it their disguise because they don’t want to be caught or be known yet?’ one of the staff thought to himself. When they finished, they all went down on the side and bowed down.
“Sir, please enjoy your breakfast.” They also bowed down as soon as they walked pass Ingrid. “…we’re now leaving, ma’am.”
“Thank you.” She said almost whispering.
Ingrid’s feet seem to have a mind on its own that it walked to the dining table despite her strong resistance, her stomach keeps on growling as if protesting against her strong resistance to sit with the two.She could not help it even herself because she’s so hungry and frustrated on the other hand. So she just quickened her steps and without care, sat beside Clark and look for something to eat.
Her eyes were full of delight as she looks closely to the mouth watering breakfast. She did no longer care what Clifford may think of her, as long as she could make her stomach stop growling.
‘Wew! Mornings like this.’ She took the Eggs Benedict served on English muffins and rocket salad with smoked salmon and her favorite cafe Americano.
Clifford was so amused watching her delighted face. He discontinued eating his breakfast and just looked at Ingrid while she eats. He supported his head with both his hand and his eyes were full of warmth.
‘I won’t trade lovely mornings like this for the world.’ He suddenly thought.
As he looked at her, the more he confirms the inexplainable passion he has for her, but he won’t trust it yet, for he knew that feelings comes and goes, it should be tested first.
Out of the blue a small hand softly stroke his arms, he glances down and was surprise by child’s gesture. Clark covered the right side of his mouth and was in the act of whispering something to him. So Clifford moved his ear closer to the child’s mouth.
“Why are you staring at my mom, uncle Clifford? Do you love her?”
“Huh?? Where did you get that idea??” his voice almost thundered, but instead of being afraid of his voice, the child giggled.
Clifford was so caught off guard that he did not know what and how to react and how to answer the child’s blunt question. Which reminds him of what he did to Ingrid earlier.
“What are you giggling at, Clark?” it was then that Ingrid noticed something was amiss after she ate and had her fill.
Clifford and Clark looked at each other.
“Nothing.” They answered simultaneously. Once more, Clark giggled.
“Uncle Cliff and I have a secret, mom.” Clifford was stunned and felt tricked by the child. Ingrid then glared at him suspecting that he is teaching some naughty things on her son. He raised his hands and said,
“I really have no idea what Clark is talking about.” He denied, but underneath he is starting to sweat. Ingrid did not believe him and she narrowed her eyes with full of suspicion.
“But you do, uncle Cliff. But I promise, I won’t tell mom. It’s just between you and me.” The child grinned, which makes him sweat profusely underneath and is now visible on his forehead.
“Clark, we promised to each other that there will be no secrets between us, right?”
“Yes, that’s right,” the child agreed.
“So, tell me, what’s the secret between you and Mr. Briggs?” the child did not answer right away but was caught in deep thought.
Moments later, the child’s eyes lit up with an idea.
“Okay, I’ll reveal our secret, mom, but first, you also have to reveal my father’s name…”
