Maiden Of The Splitting Moon - Chapter 745: Mutual Destruction
The moment those words left her mouth, she pointed her sword down at the serpents. The clouds flashed and thundered as the spear of wind and lightning gathered more power!
“Storm Lance: Mortal Lightning.”
It slowly emerged from the stirring black clouds before cracking down in almost an instant. And in anticipation of the attack, Cheng Wei pointed his spear at her, sending the ten serpents up.
They rose out of the ground opening their mouths to roar out, facing off against this blinding strike. Their bodies twisted together transforming into one massive beast.
And this great creation did manage to stop the spear from coming down. Both sides clashed in the air as the giant serpent attempted to swallow the spear!
Neither seemed to give in to the other. Even though the spear was stopped it was not broken yet. In fact, the serpent’s body started to fade. Lightning arced out of the spear, striking and charring the wood.
Smoke started to rise from the burns and red embers replaced the emerald energy running through it.
Despite that, the serpent held strong, slowly devouring the spear in one bite.
“Hah! Do you think you can break my technique?! The gap between our strengths is far too wide! The Evergreen Heart is fueling me as well! I’m practically immortal and my power is limitless! Give up and die!”
Cheng Wei laughed maniacally while pointing his spear upwards. The serpent surged forward, reinvigorated by his command. The green energy that flowed through its body glowed intensely as it pushed the spear back!
However, Ming Yue was prepared for this. She flew down, brandishing both swords and swinging them wildly toward the plateau. What came was a flurry of strikes, brilliant crescent arcs of energy that could cut through anything with ease.
Her goal was to destroy the Evergreen Heart after all.
There were at least a dozen of them and with the Serpent preoccupied, Cheng Wei didn’t have the means to stop most of them.
He quickly moved, making his way toward where Evergreen Heart was. His spear swung fiercely parrying any strike that threatened his treasure. But the others strike everywhere around him, slicing off parts of the land and causing everything to shake.
They dug deep, going past dirt and stone before cutting right through the roots of the Evergreen Heart. In that moment, the glowing energy of the serpent weakened as it faltered against the spear of wind and lightning.
Noticing this, Cheng Wei had a look of shock and horror as he stared up at his creation. The old man watched it waver under the power of Ming Yue’s attack.
“Come on! Break for me! Break!” he screamed.
Hearing his command, the serpent’s jaw clamped down on the spear and it only hastened the damage. You could hear its body creak under the stress. The spear struggled to keep its shape as lightning constantly shot out and struck the serpent.
The glowing embers grew into flames as smoke billowed from its mouth.
Meanwhile, he turned his attention toward Ming Yue, looking for her. Clenching his jaw and tightening his hold on the spear, he searched before finding her standing in front of her.
He glared at the young woman, pointing his spear at her,
“What more do you have?” he asked, “What can you do now?!”
Ming Yue just looked up at the serpent, staring at the spear.
“The only thing I can do is destroy now.”
It was then that the serpent finally broke the spear but Ming Yue’s technique didn’t go quietly. With so much power condensed into that form, it exploded the moment it broke.
There was a thunderous boom that echoed all through the land.
Thousands of tendrils of lightning burst out, striking everything within that plateau. There wasn’t enough time for either Cheng Wei or Ming Yue to avoid the collateral damage.
It took no more than a single breath for all of this to happen. A blinding light that could be seen from every corner of the continent!
And once that light dissipated, it revealed a plateau that was devoid of life. Every tree, root, and blade of grass had turned to cinders. The ground was black with embers everywhere. The air was gray with enough ash and smoke to sting eyes.
And the serpent, or what’s left of it, was just burnt roots. Its head and neck were gone, vaporized by the explosion.
Everything was quiet and there didn’t seem to be any sign of life.
But then, after a full minute, there was movement. Emerging from the ashes, Ming Yue was on one knee, using Blood Moon to support herself. Her body was covered in soot, every part of her body ached as Pale Moon had deactivated and the backlash came.
She breathed heavily, her eyes were closed as she tried to recover what little energy she had left.
No words came out of her mouth as she finally looked around, seeing the damage that had been done. All that she saw was fire and ash, nothing was alive here, and yet, her eyes were alert.
“He’s not dead. He definitely isn’t dead yet.”
Taking just a little more time to recover, Ming Yue pushed herself back up, using Blood Moon like a cane. As she scanned her surroundings, her eyes flashed once she saw movement not far from her.
She stumbled forward, taking each step hastily and nearly falling over herself. And as she tried to catch up, she saw what it was.
Cheng Wei lying on the ground but it looked as if something was bringing him away.
“Those are roots… he’s using the roots to move. He must be heading back to the Evergreen Heart!”
Seeing this, she followed after him, trying her best to catch up.
The old man was in a similar state as her. Despite the higher cultivation, the serpent he controlled was destroyed and the backlash was enormous. He coughed several times, wheezing and wincing in pain. Having endured the shockwave, his body was shaken and aching.
“I… I must get back to it. It must be safe, it has to be.”
He didn’t even notice her following him, solely focused on returning to the Evergreen Heart. With the ground burnt up and covered in craters, it wasn’t hard for him to locate it. However, its condition was a sight for sore eyes.
The wilting leaves, the drooping branches, the beating had grown weaker, and the color had faded.
It was no longer vibrant or robust, slowly dying with each passing moment. Seeing this made Cheng Wei get up.
“No, no, no, no…”
He struggled to get up, using both hands to push himself and take a better look. But his face said it all, everything was ruined.
“I can still fix it. I can still do it! I just need some of its energy to heal.”
The old man crawled forward, desperately trying to get closer. He was just a meter away, holding his hand out to grasp at that sliver of hope. However, it was cut right in front of him.
A blade of wind came, cutting right through the base of the Evergreen Heart. The beating stopped and the tree fell over right in front of him. His eyes widened with shock as he froze right there, then he turned around, seeing Ming Yue behind him.
With Blood Moon in one hand, she had pointed her other hand towards the tree and killed it.
“Hah, you killed it. You really killed it”, he repeated those same words, looking at her with no emotion.
Once that moment passed, Cheng Wei seemed to have aged over ten years in an instant. The life within him quickly faded away.
As for Ming Yue, she just stared back at him, lowering her hand.
She knew what she had done.
She had sealed her own fate.
