Mimi - Chapter 222
“My sister was having an affair with him, wasn’t she?”
Those words caused the smile on Shen Jue’s face to drop, his eyes blackening with undecipherable emotions. Standing on the side, Tobias detected the change of emotions on the man’s face. He watched Shen Jue’s movements with cold eyes, his line of sight never leaving him.
Just when Mimi expected him to completely snap, Shen Jue lowered his head and gave a low laugh; his eyes had a glint of cold as his mouth curled up slightly.
“You’re always so sharp, little one.” He chuckled.
Mimi’s narrowed her eyes. The light in her normally clear, bright eyes instantly dimmed.
“So you admit it?”
Shen Jue replied with his signature smile still hanging on his face and said, “If I do, will that give you a reason to further believe I was responsible for her death?”
She couldn’t refute. The more she uncovered about Shen Jue and her sister’s relationship, the more she felt she had been working with the murderer the whole time. However, while she wasn’t too quick to point all fingers to Shen Jue, that didn’t mean she’d let him off easy.
“Did you? Did you have anything to do with her death?”
Shen Jue looked at her silently. Then, he hooked his lips, asking with a low, calm voice, “If I did?”
Mimi’s expression twisted upon hearing this. Her breathing slowed, her heart pounding violently in her chest. There was stillness on both sides. If her hatred at that moment was visible, the air would be scarlet.
“Then I will kill you with my own hands.” Mimi’s voice was abnormally calm, yet it carried a sense of cold with them.
Tobias’s eyebrows furrowed. When he glanced in her direction and saw her expression, the light in his eyes dimmed.
She was serious.
“Mimi…” He warned.
“Don’t.” She cut him off, her eyes fixed on the man in front of her. “Shen Jue, answer my question.”
Shen Jue appeared rather calm. His eyes lit when their gazes met again, a pair of eyes filled with cold murderous intent staring back at him.
Finally, he sighed. “No, I didn’t.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the killing intent in Mimi’s expression vanished, replaced by sheer calm.
“Then, I believe you.”
The eyebrow on Shen Jue’s face rose. In all honesty, he was stunned by her words. Not just Shen Jue, but Tobias as well. A few seconds ago, the girl was emitting the aura of a person about to commit murder, then suddenly switched to a calm state; faster than anyone could comprehend.
“You do?” Shen Jue blinked with confusion.
Mimi’s eyes dimmed, but she concealed it very well. When she raised her eyes once again, they were shining with that same old teasing glint in them.
“Yes, I do. While I do think you’re capable of committing some outrageous things, I don’t think you were responsible for her death.”
Shen Jue studied her intently for a moment before responding, “What makes you think that?”
Looking up to meet his gaze, Mimi’s eyes were still upturned crescents as she said, “Because you never loved my sister.”
If Emily did have an affair, then the only person Shen Jue would kill in that situation wouldn’t be her sister, but the man she was seeing. That was just the nature of Shen Jue’s obsessiveness.
“However, just because I believe you, that doesn’t mean I trust you.” She pointed out clearly.
Shen Jue stared at her clear, bright eyes and smiled. “Okay.”
A satisfied grin surfaced on Mimi’s face after receiving his answer. She stretched her arms in the air and yawned.
“Let’s go now, I’m tired.”
Shen Jue nodded and walked to the car, followed by Mimi and Tobias. As they walked, Tobias stole a glance at the girl beside him. A trace of emotion rippled across the depths of his eyes upon looking at her. Noticing his gaze, Mimi looked up and flashed her eyes.
“What is it?” She tilted her head.
Tobias’s pupils dilated with an unknown emotion, but he managed to conceal it quickly.
“Nothing.” Then, he looked away.
Mimi caught the thread of hesitation on Tobias’s face as he spoke. Her heart clenched. She suddenly felt a little regret for having him tag along.
To see such a dark side of her…she never wanted him to see.
…
During the car ride back, Mimi had quickly fallen asleep after complaining about the heavy fake b.o.o.b.s on her chest. Sitting in the back seat, she leaned against Tobias’s shoulder, soft snores escaping her parted red lips.
Although Tobias’s features were still locked in their usual calm expression, there was warmth welling up from deep inside his heart. He looked at the girl sleeping peacefully on his shoulder and moved a piece of hair out of her face. When his fingers caressed her cheek, she shivered at his touch.
“You spent the whole day with her, didn’t you?”
Tobias continues to lazily stroke Mimi’s cheek with the crook of his index finger, keeping his attention on her – completely ignoring Shen Jue.
In response to his silence, Shen Jue chuckled, his eyes on the road.
“However you look at it, it’s clear she holds high regards to you.” His slender fingers tapped the steering wheel. “She trusts you.”
The car filled with silence, the only sounds coming from the cars driving past them.
“People often say someone pure is untainted by bad things.” Shen Jue’s voice was oddly soft. “But I believe someone with a pure heart bears the heaviest burdens and scars. The more scars, the purer they’ll be…”
“Shen Jue.” Tobias’s dark voice interuppted him.
Shen Jue elevated his head and looked in the rearview mirror. While Tobias’s attention was still focused on the girl sleeping on her shoulder, his tone directed toward Shen Jue was deeply threatening.
“I don’t care what your thoughts or plans are, but do not involve Mimi in them.”
He finally raised his eyes away from the girl to meet gazes with Shen Jue. There was no change in his expression, but a dangerous and icy glint flashed through his eyes.
“Otherwise, I won’t hesitate to help her kill you.”
Astonishment instantly emerged within Shen Jue’s previously jeering and teasing gaze. He laughed coldly.
“If that time comes…I’ll be waiting.”
Tobias said nothing, then shifted his gaze back to Mimi. His eyes visibly softened as he admired her sleeping expression with fascination. Shen Jue had watched his actions with an unreadable stare before he looked back at the road ahead, his hands gripping the stealing wheel going unnoticed.
