Mutant Farmer in The Apocalypse - Chapter 81
But before he could stop and take a breath, he saw zombies’ heads popping from behind every tree he passed.
“AAAAHH! WHY ARE THEY EVERYWHERE?!”
Yang Zhang continued running restlessly. His scream only provokes the rest of the zombies, and they also come out of their hiding and start chasing Yang Zhang.
“HRAAAARGHH!”
“AAAAHH! STOP SCREAMING! YANG ZHANG, YOU IDIOT! YOU’RE PROVOKING THEM! AAAAAAHHH!” Yang Zhang couldn’t handle his panic anymore, his adrenaline kicked in, and he forced himself to run as fast as possible.
He aimed at the tree and opened his palm while running, “Ivy, please help me!”
“Vii… Vii…” Little Ivy accidentally saw the amount of zombies chasing them, and she was also frozen in fear. She couldn’t even open her eyes right now.
“Ah fuck! Damn it!” Yang Zhang cursed out of desperation. The zombies behind him were getting nearer because Yang Zhang could hear their grunt.
Yang Zhang had to find another way to escape, or he would be a zombie’s lunch for the day.
He looked to his left and right.
His left was surrounded by trees, while his right was the village’s tall wooden fences. It was tall enough, so he couldn’t just jump on it to escape the zombies.
Yang Zhang could see so many zombies hiding behind the trees. It seemed that they had some sort of collective hive minds that allowed them to make coordinated attacks despite being mindless zombies.
Yang Zhang knew he had no more energy to keep running. He looked at the tall wooden fence and then started shooting at one wooden fence in front of him.
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
CRACK!
Yang Zhang’s pea bullets were strong enough to chip the old wooden fence, but the zombies might still follow him. He grabbed Daniella from his jeans again and asked, “D—Daniella, red?”
“Dii!”
Daniella’s fluff around her head turned red after a moment, and Yang Zhang was so relieved, he almost cried right now.
“Oh, finally!”
Yang Zhang looked at the wooden fence that got a big crack after shooting it with pea bullets. He aimed his gauntlet gun and shot a few more times to ensure that the tall wooden fence would be weak enough for him to break.
He looked at Spicy Wing, who had been eyeing the fence. He seemed to be wanting to help.
“Lieutenant, jump out from me and rush to that fence! Try to kick it until it’s enough to make a hole for me!”
“Chirp!”
Lt. Spicy Wing saluted and jumped from Yang Zhang’s head and rushed towards the cracked fence. He started kicking the cracked fence to weaken it even more.
“CHIRP! CHIRP! CHIRP!”
CRACK!
Yang Zhang continued running and looked up to Chestnut gliding on top of him, “Chestnut! Check whether there is a zombie behind that fence!”
“Squeak!”
Chestnut glided to the fence and landed on top. He observed the surroundings and reported, “SQUEAK!”
“Okay, all clear!”
Yang Zhang rushed to the wooden fence that had been severely cracked.
He grabbed Spicy Wing with his left hand and hit the cracked wooden fence with his shoulder.
CRACK!
Yang Zhang successfully broke the fence. He turned around before entering the village.
“HRRRGHHHH!”
The zombies were so close to him, somehow, they got even angrier when Yang Zhang broke the village’s fence.
“TAKE THIS!”
Yang Zhang inhaled deep and then blew Daniella’s red seeds as hard as possible, “FUUUUUH!”
The red seed flew and created a barrier made of explosives in front of the broken gate.
“CHESTNUT, TO ME!!” Yang Zhang quickly signaled Chestnut, sitting on top of the fence, to return to him because the explosion might hurt the squirrel.
“Squeak!”
Chestnut quickly jumped from the fence towards Yang Zhang.
Yang Zhang ran to save himself, and the moment he started running, a big explosion rang through the village, and he was thrown away by the debris from the destroyed fence.
BOOOM!
“Argh!” Yang Zhang rolled on the ground for a moment. He was bruised and covered with dirt.
“Ugh… why does every visit in this place always end up with pain?” Yang Zhang complained. He checked the fence, and after making sure that the explosion was strong enough to hold them for a while, Yang Zhang checked his pets.
“Are you guys alright?”
“Vii!”
“Dii!”
“Squeak! Squeak!”
“Chirp!”
“Alright, now we have to find the right place to hide. I’m sure those zombies are angry that I ruined their village,” Yang Zhang said.
“Chestnut, can you still fly now?”
“Squeak!”
“Fly high and continue observing the village. Tell me if there is a horde of zombies hiding somewhere, so we don’t get ambushed for literally the third time!” Yang Zhang ordered. He wouldn’t lie that he got pissed off to get ambushed twice in this place, and both were life-threatening.
“Squeak!” Chestnut flew and glided through the village, checking whether there was a horde of zombies hiding somewhere.
“Why do I even bother anyway? If I can’t get anything from this visit, this will be the last time I ever stepped inside this village!” Yang Zhang complained again.
“Eh, Brother Zhang, don’t be so harsh. I’ve been waiting for your visit for a while.”
Yang Zhang looked up because he heard the voice from the roof of a house. He saw the young man he had been searching for a while.
“You— I— Why don’t you— ah, damn it!” Yang Zhang could only ruffle his hair and curse to utter his frustration. He was seriously annoyed because he thought that Xi Feng could at least warn him in some way so he could escape the ambush.
“You seem so frustrated, Brother Zhang. Did something happen?” Xi Feng asked, but he was trying to hold his laugh, which infuriated Xi Feng even more.
“Come down, you scoundrel! Let me hit your head once!” Yang Zhang yelled. “I was visiting you to check on your wellbeing!”
“Hehe, I’m sorry, Brother Zhang. I really don’t know that you are visiting. I heard the explosion and came here to see you with a bruised face and tattered jacket,” Xi Feng said, still with a mischievous grin on his face. “Let’s leave now. Those zombies will start patrolling once more.”
Yang Zhang was still angry at Xi Feng, but he was in no condition to scold that mischievous teenage boy. He looked at Chestnut, who still glided and called him, “Chestnut, down! We’ve found Xi Feng!”
“Squeak!”
Chestnut went down and landed on Yang Zhang’s shoulder. He followed Xi Feng, who jumped from the roof and walked to the main street without worry.
The Main Street of this village was empty, but Yang Zhang didn’t lose his alertness because the first time he visited this place, the Main Street also looked deserted.
“Brother Zhang, you don’t need to be so alert inside the village now. Things have changed,” Xi Feng said.
“Changed?”
“Yeah, those zombies are now splitting into two groups—” Xi Feng said. He stopped in front of a house that was actually clean from the outside, with no sign of dust.
Xi Feng unlocked the door with a key and opened it for Yang Zhang, “Let’s talk inside, Brother Zhang. I will tell you what happened.”
Yang Zhang nodded and entered the house. Xi Feng closed and locked the door from inside, “Okay, wait, Mudan has been wanting to meet with you.”
“Oh! Yeah, how’s your little sister?”
“Hehe, she is in good condition!” Xi Feng went to open the bedroom door, and a small mutated plant around the size of Poddie wearing a peony dress walked out of the bedroom.
“Mudaaan!” Mudan looked happy when Xi Feng opened the bedroom door. She greeted her big brother, and Xi Feng picked her up.
Like before, Mudan wrapped her long hand decorated with peonies on Xi Feng’s neck.
“Mudan, there is a guest you’ve wanted to meet for a while,” Xi Feng said.
“Mudan?”
“Good afternoon, Mudan. Hehe, long time no see,” Yang Zhang called her name.
Mudan turned around and got excited. She started emanating a sweet fragrance from her body.
“Mudan! Mudan!” Mudan pointed at something in the drawer, and Xi Feng opened it. “Oh, this is the flower you want to give to Brother Zhang, right?”
“Mudan!”
Xi Feng handed a single pink peony with a strong scent to Yang Zhang, “Brother Zhang, this is peony produced by Mudan when she misses you.”
“Miss me?”
“Yes, maybe because you’re the one who used the ability to make her alive, that’s why she sees you as her oldest brother, and I’m the second brother, haha!” Xi Feng laughed heartily. “She makes it seems like we’re two big brothers that will protect her.”
“Well, she missed you a lot and produced this pink peony overnight. She said she wanted to give it to you. That particular peony somehow can stay almost 5 days inside the drawer without wilting, so I guess that’s special,” Xi Feng said.
“Ah, thank you so much, Mudan!” Yang Zhang accepted the flower.
“Muuu dan!”
Yang Zhang observed it, and there didn’t seem to be anything special with it. It was just a pink peony that had a strong scent.
But since Xi Feng said this peony didn’t wilt even after 5 days inside a drawer, there must be some magical effect.
“Vii?”
“Oh? What is it, Ivy? You want to have this peony?” Yang Zhang was a bit surprised to see Little Ivy, who had been hiding the whole time, finally raised her voice.
“Vii…” Little Ivy nodded meekly while staring at the peony attentively.
