My Career is Useless in this World!! - Chapter 216
Episode 209- Infiltrating the enemy base alone
Eugene walked past trees and through the woods as quietly and cautiously as possible. She had her guards up and guarded against possible incoming attacks by the enemies or even by animals that lived inside the forest. Even though she already knew the rough location of the base and also the map of the forest, she took her time getting to the base and it took her roughly 2 hours to get to the base instead of 30 minutes.
The only way she knew she was at the enemy’s base was when her ears picked up sounds of people breathing and their footsteps. Only then did she pause and begin to proceed with even more caution. With the help of the light of the lantern light outside of the enemy’s bases, she was able to spot the enemies patrolling and surveillance the base.
Eugene breathed in and out to calm her nerves as she watched two people standing outside of the base. It will be her first time infiltrating the base alone which made her slightly nervous. She had experience infiltrating practice bases with her comrades and understands the work that needs to be done with everyone in order to succeed, but she was alone, which meant she had to do everything herself. But even through her nerves, she knew that she had to do everything possible for Euria’s plan to be more successful and for them to be able to escape with ease, hence, she could only suck back in her nerves and breath and concentrate hard on which spot to push in.
First of all, going up to the enemies and knocking them out wasn’t a good idea. This plan is a long-term plan, and she will have to stay in the base for a while until Euria arrives. This means she can’t cause any trouble for the time being. Eugene breathed out, before reaching in for a pouch that was filled with various herbs. She took a handful of herbs that her former family loved using and tucked it inside her pocket for easy use. This herb was the herb her former family put into incense to put their targets to sleep, but if ingested as a whole, poisons them. The herb she pulled an Uno reverse card on before killing them.
Eugene walked quietly yet fast to the oil lamps that were up lit around the base and put one herb into each lamp. After she was done, she moved out of the spot and stayed a certain distance away so that she was not affected by the herb yet is able to oversee the entire situation.
The herb that burned with the lamp was not strong enough to make the enemies sleep, however strong enough to make them incredibly weakened and make their senses dull. Though it would be great if the targets sleep, dulling their senses was more than enough for Eugene. After all, if the enemies truly did sleep, it would arouse suspicion from everyone which means the enemies strengthen the security at the base.
Eugene waited 30 minutes for the herbs to have their full effect on the patrolling guards before fast walking to the base’s entrance and dodging the guards like a pro. She did not see the gold cave Ron mentioned, but she had a feeling that she already passed the gold cove Ron mapped out. Getting in wasn’t difficult and while Eugene was in the base, she made sure to put two herbs in every oil lamp she passed by. One of the herbs was burnt directly inside the oil lamp, while the other one will roast slowly, which means if there was no air ventilation inside the base, the effects of the herbs will reach every nook and corner and stay for at least 10 hours. Which was enough time for Euria to commence her plan as well as escape.
And of course, as a smart and modernized person, she covered her nose up with a thick cloth and used it as a mask.
Eugene did everything she could to hide away from people. She hid in closets, storage rooms, climbed up walls, hid underneath small spots, etc, etc. Only until Eugene reached a certain room that Euria mentioned when she stopped. The room wasn’t guarded like other rooms, but what distinguishes this room from other rooms was the color of the doorknob. Instead of a regular metallic doorknob, this one was gold. Euria mentioned that this room will not be guarded until she arrives so she would have no problem entering the room at all.
She reached for the stone-covered door and twisted the golden doorknob open when suddenly she encountered a figure kneeling with its back facing towards her. Eugene instantly reached for the sword on her waist and watched as the person turned around towards her. There was no time to think so Eugene chose to strike first. She used her flashing step and dashed towards the figure who immediately dodged but was unable to because of Eugene’s fast left kick.
Eugene grabbed the figure’s mouth to shut the person up, rotated her sword, and struck the person’s shoulder blades, before quickly striking to the neck where it hurts a lot.
“URGH”
A muffled groan came from the person and Eugene paused. She tightened her grip on the person’s mouth who immediately stepped back.
“…Female?” Eugene muttered, her voice was cold. Both the figure and herself couldn’t see each other due to the hoods that covered their faces completely. However, the tension was still high and Eugene felt instinctive that the person in front of her was preparing to attack.
But even if she knew, she felt odd. Eugene thought back to when she first entered the room and when she first attacked. Only when she remembered how the person in front of her dodged did Eugene’s hands twitched in speechlessness.
Eugene closed her eyes for a second, and when she re-opened them, she raised her hands and pulled her hood down. Naturally, the figure in front of Eugene was alarmed when Eugene pulled her hood back but when she saw a natural grey-white like hair falling softly to the person’s shoulder, the figure paused. The beautiful grey long hair could only belong to two people in this world.
“… Miss?”
That one word confirmed Eugene’s suspicion. The person in front of her was someone who worked for the Veria family. It was obvious because of the way the person in front of her dodged her. And as for who the person is, who could it be other than Euria’s hidden guard, Pelle.
“What are you doing here?” Eugene asked with a brow raised. Euria never told her that Pelle was here, or did she forget to mention that?
“… That is classified information.” Pelle hesitated for a bit because she was shocked that Eugene was in front of her, however, she declined to answer Eugene’s question.
“…” Eugene blinked before sighing.
“Where’s the green stone?” Eugene asked while turning around. She walked towards the center of the room which had four stones placed in a rectangle and a spacious place enough for one person to sit in the middle.
Pelle did not respond, so Eugene turned around and repeated her question, “Did you place a crack on it already?”
Before Eugene left, she was told by Euria to find a green stone. This stone was a precious stone used to make the teleportation portal. After finding it, she must place a crack on it. The crack will not break the stone completely, however, make the connection between two portals weak. This would make the person operating the teleportation portal exert more energy because of the leak in the energy of the green stone. And when the teleportation portal opens, Euria can attack the person behind the teleportation portal who is concentrating on fixing the energy leak and then easily destroy the greenstone before leaving.
Pelle was silent for a few seconds as if she was contemplating on answering Eugene. But in the end, she responded, “It is very difficult.”
‘Meaning, you couldn’t do it?’ Eugene raised a brow while sliding her hair behind her ears. She walked in front of the four green stones and pointed, “This is all right?”
Pelle shook her head before pointing on top. Eugene raised her head and her lips twitched, “…” For real?
Her neck was at a 180-degree angle as she stared at the shiny green orb boulder. The green boulder was big. However, that wasn’t the problem. The problem was placing a crack in it without breaking it… from the ceiling.
“Why is it all the way there…” Eugene muttered as her entire face blackened. The ceiling was 3 meters tall! How was she ever going to reach it?
“Are there any ladders?” Eugene turned to Pelle who quickly shook her head. Eugene turned around and stared at the four stones in front of her. She now understood why Pelle had been kneeling when she came in. Pelle wanted to jump to get to the green boulder which was 3 meters above them.
“And did whatever you did work?” Eugene was asking if jumping worked.
