My Career is Useless in this World!! - Chapter 218
Episode 211- Dazzling gold caught her eyes by surprise
There was no doubt that there was a mechanism inside the hallway which made it impossible for people who didn’t know the layout to go through. She analyzed everything in great detail, each of the stone slabs that made up the hallway and the floor before proceeding to walk to ones that looked dirtier than the others. She walked to ones that were dirty and not to ones that were covered in dust and not aged. It was difficult before when you looked at the whole picture as a whole, nothing seemed out of place and looked very ordinary. However, if you analyze each and every slab, you will notice a slight difference. And these were the differences that Eugene took note of and memorized into her head.
Once Eugene reached the dead end of the hallway, she stopped. There was an oil lamp covered in dust which Eugene walked to and once she reached it her eyebrows immediately perked up. No one would have noticed the slight detail if that person wasn’t Eugene who went through at least 50 lamps inside the base. The extra detail she noticed was an extra curvature to the base of the lamps which did not exist in the 50 plus lamps she tweaked. Eugene reached for the curvature, felt around it, before pushing it.
Crack-
Eugene faced the wall opening that had a slight crack of opening and brought her hand back from the lamp. She walked to the wall without hesitation in her steps and not after five minutes of walking, Eugene was led outside of the base. The smell of greenery and the humidity of the forest hit her at once as she paused in her step.
“….” She scratched her head awkwardly and breathed in the smell of nature. The forest wasn’t as dense here which made the moonlight able to shine through and light up some of the surrounding areas. Eugene didn’t want to explore the forest hence she turned back when all of a sudden a dazzling gold caught her eyes by surprise.
“Wha…” She flinched. Eugene closed her eyes briefly before reopening her eyes. She stared at the dazzling light that seemed to become brighter and brighter as the clouds covering some parts of the moon moved away. Once the area she was looking at lit up brightly, did she gasp from surprise?
“The… The… The.” She stuttered as she stared at the massive amount of gold bars in shock! The gold cave?!
Eugene walked back and forth. She walked around the gold as she admired her sight. Eugene gulped as a slight desire to possess whatever was in front of her burned her heart. Just slightly though.
Eugene put her hands on her waist as she observed the gold in great detail. As Ron said, the gold had bat carvings. And other than that, there was nothing else to note except that the gold was in a huge amount. There was so much money here that it stunned her speechless. Her head was blank even though she was in deep thoughts.
‘Exitium’s financial hub…’ There was a reason why Ron said such a thing. Because there was so much money here.
Eugene coughed before she returned to where she came from. Of course, she wanted to bathe in this money called gold and sleep here forever but she could not afford to do this right now. Didn’t Levis tell her that they had a bit of the royal blood flowing in them? Scratch that, they did have royal blood flowing in them! This meant that when the money reached the Emperor’s hands, she might still have a chance to inherit this amount of money if… If something happens to everyone in line to the throne of course.
Eugene shook her head! How could she think of something so dark! Well, no matter. What can she do with that amount of money anyway? It was beyond her, and not something a person like her should desire.
Eugene headed into the base at the entrance she came from and once again passed through the traps before reaching the stairs heading upstairs. Now, onto the real matters at hand. She walked to the right hallway she hadn’t explored. She walked for a while when suddenly a piercing scream of agony could be heard.
Eugene stopped walking until the screaming stopped for a moment and only then did she continue walking. The smell of blood crept to her nose along with the smell of the moldy and damp basement. It was something instinctive but her heart skipped a beat the moment the familiar smell wafted through her nose.
“…” Eugene’s great mode from discovering the gold was only replaced by the feeling of emptiness and gloominess as she continued to walk forward. Despite the awful and depressing atmosphere in the basement, Eugene did not forget her objective and burned the herb in the oil lamps she passed by.
“AHHHHH!!!”
The screaming voice belonging to an aged female could be heard more clearly once Eugene got closer. Eugene did not pause like before and continued to walk until she reached the source of the scream. She hid in a dark corner and watched as a small group of bandits took their turn to torture an old couple.
The room was not very comparable to the torture basement of her former life, however, the amount of dried blood was commendable.
She allowed the sight to burn into her eyes, as she observed each and every person who took part in this torture carefully. She had thought that this group of bandits were only capable of robbing things at night, and never thought that they had a sinister side to them. The reason for this was because the bandits seemed to be scared of Euria when she had threatened them. They were scared, which was why Eugene didn’t think much of them.
But the sight in front of her proved her thoughts wrong. The bandits were greedy people who only cared about money. They didn’t care about the ethics of killing people, nor cared about the organization. What they cared about was only money, which was why they were here torturing this poor old couple for money despite the intense situation involving Euria and Exitium. Because there was no way Exitium would approve of the bandits having another mission along with the mission of making sure Euria was in their hands.
“Do you know what this is?” One of the men raised a syringe up as he grinned creepily at the old couple.
The old couple could do nothing but cry. They were strapped into two chairs with their bodies wrapped around in ropes.
“This is what we injected your entire family with and made them all cry in pain and die in agony worse than death!” The man laughed happily and as if he was high on something, the man began to clap his hands as he jumped up and down. When Eugene saw his face for a brief moment, the word lunatic entered her mind.
Eugene watched as the old couple’s faces turned from pale to green from horror, “YOU! WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY SON AND GRANDSON?!” Grandpa screamed at the man’s face!
“HAHAHAHAHA! MORE! SCREAM MORE!” The bandit shouted back as if he was satisfied that he made the old man scream.
Eugene stared at the syringe in wonder before her eyes narrowed down dangerously.
“WHAT DID YOU DO TO OUR FAMILY!” This time, it was the grandmother who couldn’t take it anymore and condemned the bandit.
The man pointed at himself with a startled face, “Huh? What I did to them?” He asked, before appearing to go into deep thoughts. After a minute of thinking, he replied, “I only let them die slowly. That’s all I did.” His face crept into a smile, bringing only screams of heart ache and pain to the old couple.
“Now. Now. Let’s inject you with this too.” The man signaled for the 4 men to grab the couple before he injected them with whatever liquid was in the syringe.
“Now, will you tell us where the money is?” The bandit squatted down with the empty syringes.
“AHHHHHGHH!!” Only screams could be heard.
“HONEY! IT HURTS!! HONEYYY!” The grandmother screamed as her eyes turned bloodshot.
“Now? Where is it? Tell me, otherwise there is one final step and that is burning you alive!” The man smiled as he patted the gourd of oil by the table.
“ARGHHHHH”
No one could reply as only pain went through their bodies. Agonizing pain that made them want to die.
“Hey hurry! It will be our turn to guard the base soon.” One of the bandits ushered for the sadistic bandit to hurry up.
“You go on first. I will go later.” The man did not look at his comrades and only watched the old couple squirming in pain.
The other guy looked at his comrade and nodded, “Make sure to come later then” He said before leaving with his three other comrades.
