My Chaotic City - Chapter 52
The countdown ended very quickly.
At that moment, the Space-Time Wormhole suddenly expanded by more than two times. It looked like the great maw of a beast. A path quickly opened and following that, a horn sounded. Four soldiers in armor lined up in a row marched forwards.
[Infantry: Level 10. Lowest level soldier of the Red Dragon Empire. Physical Melee Troop, 1000 HP, 12 Attack, 6 Physical Defense, 10 Magic Defense, no skills.]
Two of the four infantrymen brandished large swords while the other two bore banners. There was the symbol of a golden dragon on the banner, which was the war banner of the Red Dragon Empire.
“The Red Dragon Empire is undefeated in battle!”
“Attack the city! Take their lands! Defeat them! Annihilate them!”
The soldiers yelled with their intimidating appearances.
[Area Announcement: Attack on the City is beginning. The Attacking Forces have 48 hours!]
Li Hanqiang breathed a sigh of relief when he heard the announcement.
The Attacking Forces were numbered at 10,000, He originally thought that they would all spawn in one go, as this was usually the case when the monsters attacked the Chaotic City. However, they were now going to be spawned after 48 hours. That would be a lot less stressful as if there were just four enemies in a team, that would have meant that they would spawn at one team per minute.
“These infantrymen raise their banners and shout slogans. It looks like the Players are the true core of the Attacking Forces. With just 625 Players, I think I can hold them off!” Li Hanqiang thought to himself.
At this moment, the Fire Tower began to attack. The four infantrymen in armor kept shouting their war cries as they slowly advanced in step, falling before they even leave the Fire Tower’s attack range.
The War Corridor turned quiet and it took a dozen seconds or so before the Players began to appear.
Li Hanqiang floated in midair as he surveyed the scene. His eyes could not help but widen, the first wave of players were part of the group of aunties who worked with Sister Pomegranate.
“Sending the aunties in the lead, how impressive! Are the Rich Emperor’s Guild a guild of aunties?” Li Hanqiang thought that this was great. Previously, the group of aunties had gotten some experience here and now it was time for them to give it back.
Sister Pomegranate and her company were not panicking as they strolled forwards, chatting and laughing with joy on their faces.
They were being given a small bonus for taking part in the City Attack, so they were naturally happy.
However, their joy turned into panic when their bodies began to burn.
“Aiyo, young man. We’re all friends, so don’t fire!” Sister Pomegranate yelled in panic as she saw Li Hanqiang.
“Don’t kill us, we’re just here to scout ahead!” Red Wine Rose yelled as well.
“Give us a chance, we’re all good guys!” The other aunties began to join in.
“I’m sorry! I’m a good guy too!” Li Hanqiang could not afford to be merciful. This was an attack on the city!
Furthermore, this group of aunties were clearly selling out their own. They were all pretending to be clueless, but Li Hanqiang had no doubts that they clearly knew what they were getting involved in.
Rapidly, this group of incompetent aunties all retreated and did not even reach the position of the Beast Hunter.
Following behind the aunties, the actual force of Players began to show up. It was a large initial wave, with tanks in the front, followed by swordsmen, assassins, archers, clerics, magicians, and others behind them.
These Players were mostly Level 18 and above, but there were not many above Level 20. Those with 2,000 HP or higher were even rarer.
There were many adventurer professions in Endless World and each profession had different pros and cons. On HP gain alone, tanks such as Shield Warriors or Knights gained roughly 100 HP per level up. Swordsmen, berserkers, and other such half tanks gained 60-80 HP. Robbers and other similar professions were even lower, gaining only 50 HP per level.
Archers, magicians, clerics, warlocks, and other such ranged professions had the lowest growth rate of HP. Every level up would gain them less than 50 HP.
It went without saying that the Players attacking the city were on a whole different level. Regardless of movement speed or spawn rate, the Players were much faster than the wild monsters. A large group of them rushed out of the Space-Time Wormhole and like the rising tide, they had covered 30 to 40 meters.
They were all screaming as they advanced.
“Brothers with me! Charge!”
“Boss Chun Sanyue has said that if we succeed, there’s a 200 RMB reward!”
“Charge!”
“Kill all of the defending Players and we’ll win!”
“Charge…”
Li Hanqiang’s face turned cold. He estimated that there were more than a hundred people coming out of the Space-Time Wormhole. He looked at them coldly before yelling, “Charging the towers now, I wish you all a fun game!”
In the blink of an eye, the Sword Qi on both sides of the War Corridor began their crossfire. There was the sound of clashing metal as translucent beams penetrated. A large number of damage numbers immediately began to appear over the heads of the attacking players and they began to cry out.
Given the tightly packed ranks of the Players, the Sword Qi easily penetrated up to eight targets. Therefore, a single beam of Sword Qi could deal eight damage values per second. This meant five beams of Sword Qi could deal 40 damage values
Surveying the scene, Li Hanqiang regretted not building more Basic Cannon Towers. The Basic Cannon Towers had a small damaging area of effect on attack. It would be extremely satisfying to bombard with these towers.
However, the attack speed of the Basic Cannon Towers were extremely slow and their basic attack power was extremely weak and would be unable to compare to the Sword Towers.
At this moment, the nine Bright Lance Dark Arrow Towers were even more intimidating. Their attacks fell like rain. The only thing that could be seen was the composite damage, with instant kills occurring constantly.
It went without saying that the Defensive Towers, when placed together, created an extremely formidable hail of fire. The large stacks of damage values made one’s heart pound as they saw it. The mob of Players struggled to reach Fanning Knight and Fiery Blade Sage. They could barely get two hits in before being killed by the Defensive Towers and Dark Redemption at the rear.
“City Lord, leave the heavily wounded ones to me! I’ll use them to summon Skeleton Warriors!” Dark Redemption bellowed, drawing his longbow with astounding speed. The Dark Arrows killed the players, managing to summon Skeleton Warriors.
Li Hanqiang naturally knew to comply and controlled the Defensive Towers so that they intentionally avoided targeting the heavily wounded Players.
Compared to the previous attacks where Li Hanqiang did not need to operate anything by letting the Defensive Towers attack automatically, he now had to display his abilities.
Li Hanqiang stepped up into the air and channeled all his abilities. In one moment, he was controlling five Sword Towers to fire at the clumped groups, and at the next moment, he was controlling the Bright Lance Dark Arrow Towers to take care of a few straggling Players with higher HP.
Controlling towers was no easy feat. Li Hanqiang had just started and he was slightly flustered. He immediately realized that controlling towers was a skill within itself.
Who said that the Chaotic City Lord did not need to operate anything. Controlling towers was also a form of operation and it was one that required high mechanical skill as well. It was a high difficulty skill!
It was fortunate that Li Hanqiang’s Defensive Towers were sufficiently powerful. It did not matter even if he did not operate them well as there was no pressure.
There was nothing to be said about Dark Redemption’s skills. The Skeleton Warriors kept increasing in number and slowly formed ranks to block the middle of the War Corridor.
At this moment, the attacking Players sent forward an even stronger wave. A large player with a round shield appeared from the Space-Time Wormhole and shouted, “Brothers! Shields up! With me!”
Li Hanqiang had noticed this player from the first moment. He had already reached Level 24 and his equipment was not bad. He had 3000 HP and he did not charge in a beeline. Instead, he zig-zagged his way forward, his feet nimble.
Looking at this, Li Hanqiang felt angry.
It seemed like an expert did not take the usual routes. It was not good enough to just charge in a straight line, he had to zig-zag and also do the serpentine, shadow stepping, and making use of blind spots and other such methods. Especially when taking on PvP[1] Challenges, experts put a premium on positioning, kiting, and avoiding damage.
Li Hanqiang understood the basics of pathing and positioning. However, he had never mastered it. In the past when he played as an adventurer, melee characters stood facing forward while ranged characters stood still. Occasionally, he would practice positioning. However, not only was he unable to exploit it, he was always unable to execute it perfectly which led to him just getting a headache as his opponent easily exploited his bad positioning.
Positioning was a skill and if an expert could use it with other such skills like blocking, evasion, blinking, and acrobatics, they would be extremely difficult to lock down.
However, Li Hanqiang was levitating in midair and had a bird’s eye view. Furthermore, he was also controlling the Defensive Towers which had locked-on targeting, so what the use of positioning? He was better off making a beeline forwards, as at least then he would be able to make it further.
“Keep that up!” Li Hanqiang said and with a thought, five Sword Towers simultaneously released their Sword Qi at the shielded Player.
No matter how good the positioning of the Player was, he would not be able to avoid a locked-on attack and was instantly struck by the five beams of Sword Qi for 400 points of damage.
He could not help but take two steps back due to that. The five beams of Sword Qi passed through him to the players behind him, causing them to cry out in panic.
“This isn’t good, this Sword Qi has no way to be defended. Have the healers come forward to heal me…”
Before he could finish, a volley of Bright Lances and Dark Arrows came flying over. The Player with the round shield was considerably good as he rolled on the ground and brought up his shield. This allowed him to avoid being struck by seven Bright Lances. However, he was struck by two of the Bright Lances. His HP was immediately drained and he died on the spot.
The moment the Player with the round shield died, discipline broke and there was an outcry of shock. The Players behind him were in an obvious panic and their advance faltered. Li Hanqiang took advantage of that to release a murderous volley of fire from the Defensive Towers.
Li Hanqiang was unaware that the Player with the round shield was an expert recruited by Zhen Deqiang and he was recognized by the others as an expert as well. For him to be so easily killed instantly affected morale.
Players would lose Levels when they died. Gaining levels was not easy, but losing them was all too easy right now. Their lives were basically cheaper than those of the monsters.
Those Players who were attacking the city were doing so for the first time. They originally thought that this would be an easy victory, but they did not expect the scene before them.
This kind of attack, charging against Defensive Towers, was no less than suicidal.
“Oh no, Roudan has died. Everybody, be careful! The Defensive Towers are too strong. Healers, do your best! Don’t worry if you’re an assassin and just charge forward as fast as you can to kill those players defending the city!”
Another Player stood forward, brandishing a large sword as he shouted to rally the troops.
Li Hanqiang noticed he had no shield, so he controlled three Bright Lance Dark Arrow Towers to concentrate fire on him. This Player’s skills were not too bad either as he managed to block one Bright Lance with his sword. However, there were still two more simultaneous attacks!
-50, -100, -1000, -50, -100, -1000, -50!
Seven damage values appeared above his head and this Player immediately turned into a flash of white light.
“The Defensive Towers are my skill!”
Li Hanqiang felt rather proud of himself and looked for his next target. Whichever was trying to stand out or attempting to carry out positioning would be his next target.
