My Crazy Rich Family : Running From My Psycho Father - Chapter 121
Chapter 121: The sound of darkness
Mckenna was relieved that the awkward lunch came to an end but not as much as Jason. He couldn’t wait to get away from them and he did. Chike followed soon after and Tammy Jones, two minutes after Chike.
Naya and McKenna sat down there in the cafeteria after lunch.
Naya watched Mckenna. She knew she was worried. The way Mckenna starred in an empty distance and the way she rubbed the back of her right palm in a soothing manner was her way of soothing herself.
Naya relaxed back into the chair.
“What is really bothering you, McKenna?”
“Nothing. I am fine. Thanks Naya”
“Bullshit! Talk to me” Naya insisted.
“Do you think Jason is in love with Tamara Jones?” Mckenna finally asked her.
“I think I am the wrong person for that question. You should ask your husband about it. But for what it’s worth, I don’t…. know” Naya asked truthfully.
Jamie looked up and down and then she squirted her eyes. “Well, it’s not worth much, Naya”
Naya shrugged. It was all she had. She refused to lie to make her feel better.
“Tell me how you met Jason” Naya asked out of nowhere.
“Naya, I don’t…”
“Just tell me…” Naya insisted.
“Well, it was about four and a half years ago. I was supposed to interview for the job of a secretary and like a total mess, I woke up late. I was looking for a lift by the roadside when this dream stopped in front of me…”
Mckenna looked like she was seeing the memory play out in front of her. She smiled again.
“Your dream, car?” Naya asked her.
“Yes, a flying spur Bentley…I don’t know whether I am pronouncing it right but yeah, it was my dream car four years ago”
“Okay. What happened next?” Naya was curious.
“Oh, he tried to run me over and I jumped into the gutter…”
Naya raised her eyebrows. “Seriously?”
Mckenna nodded “Yeah and the worst part, he refused to apologize to me. He simply ignored me and carried on like I was an invisible girl”
“No, he didn’t!” Naya laughed out loud.
“Yeah he did. Worst part, I was drooling over him from the gutter he forced me into. Don’t judge me, he was a handsome man and I…drooled. McKenna sat upright and she nodded like she was saying, she still stood by her decision.
“I am not judging, what happened next?” Naya asked her.
Naya had a soft smile on her face. She thought to herself – such an unusual beginning to a beautiful story.
“Tell me, what happened next?”
Mckenna smiled and touched her chin briefly.
“I asked for an apology but he refused to apologize. I called him a beautiful goat and he called me a harlot. But you know me, I had to teach him manners, I took a piece of broken bottle and I slashed his car tyre which in retrospect I shouldn’t have since I ended up paying for them later. Funny fact, I got to my interview and met Jason there, he was the person I was supposed to work for…”
“Did he gloat?” Naya asked her.
“No but he pretended not to know me for the first thirty minutes. And then he hired me. Two days later, we shared our first kiss and it was downhill from there. Four years later and we are married” Mckenna concluded.
“You love him” Naya told her.
“I love him. I have never loved another man, Naya…never will” Mckenna told her.
Naya leaned forward and stared at her.
“Then get your ass up and go get your man. Tamara Jones, can crawl back into the hole she came from. Seriously, dude, go…now” Naya pointed at the door.
Mckenna stood up. She nodded.
Naya was right. She was going to go get her man and tell him that they are having a baby and give Tamara Jones the finger.
“Thanks Naya”
“… McKenna”
“Yes”
“Kick her ass!” Naya told her.
Mckenna walked bravely towards the door. Heroic music played in her head as she made her way to the door.
If she had a glass of wine, she would raise it up and yell ‘here is to ass kicking’
She barely made it outside the cafeteria when she bumped into Naya and Tammy walking together.
Jason stopped when he saw his wife.
“Hey, baby” he kissed her cheek.
“Where are you going?” Mckenna was curious.
“Tamara and I are going to the nearby supermarket to get some things for everyone. We will be back soon…” Jason suddenly remembered that he wasn’t supposed to be alone with Tamara and he quickly added “please, come with us. You and I have barely seen each other since yesterday”
Mckenna thought about it for a minute or so, she could tell him to go on without her or she could show Tamara that the front seats of the car were for her and her husband. And people like her belonged in the back of the car.
“Okay. I don’t mind if I do”
Jason smiled. God! He had missed her so much.
He took her hand and they walked towards the car, Tamara walked behind them.
Tamara wondered when it would be the right time to tell Jason that she wanted to go along with EJ’s plan and it was his wife that convinced her.
Tamara was impressed with the way Mckenna talked about Kara and she hoped that one day, McKenna would see EJ in that light too.
Tamara knew she could rely on McKenna and Jason to do right by her daughter while she went to be with the man she loves and do the things she loved.
And for the first time in a very long time, Tamara wanted to be selfish.
She had forgotten how to think about herself in between being a mother at nineteen and a doctor at twenty seven years of age.
And if she left EJ with her father, she would get some of the childhood she lost with her father back.
Tamara exhaled. She just has to figure out how to do that with McKenna’s consent of course.
She was still lost in her mind as she entered the car and they drove off.

Elixir tapped her foot on the floor insistently. For some reason, the threat Ezekiel made was getting to her more than it should.
Something was wrong. This wasn’t the first time her life had been threatened and yet this time around, it was different.
She watched her grandbabies. They both were playing a card game not far from her.
Elixir decided to distract herself by talking to them.
EJ sat on her sister’s bed and she chatted heartily about a cooking show which obviously bored Kara.
“Can we talk about some else other than that stupid show, EJ?” Kara asked her.
“It’s not a stupid show. How would you feel if I called karate class, stupid?” EJ told her.
“Fine. Sorry” Kara murmured.
“It’s okay. Because you are sick and you are my baby sister, I will let you win the card game” EJ told her.
“Boo! You are saying that because you know I am going to win. You can’t beat, I learnt from the best!” Kara told her.
“From Dad?” EJ asked her.
“No. Uncle Chike taught me”
The girls talked about cards and uncle Chike while Elixir’s mind went back to thinking about the threat from her opponent.
Elixir tried to remember the exact words Ezekiel used to threaten her. For some reason, it disturbed her.
What did he mean when he said that he would take something that will hurt more than her life?
Elixir relaxed back into the armchair and she examined her life.
What would hurt her the most in the world? Then out of nowhere, it clicked.
“Jason!” She murmured and took out her phone.
“The number you are trying to call is not reachable, please try again later” the phone told her. Elixir’s heart sank into her stomach as she dialed again.
Ezekiel had been right. He was going after something she valued more than her own life.

Jason, McKenna and Tamara shopped in the supermarket. Mckenna stayed glued to her husband’s side while Tamara checked out other sections.
Mckenna wanted to pick something from the shelves when Jason kissed her out of nowhere.
She stopped and looked at him.
“I am sorry I saw Tamara without you present. Forgive me?”
“Jason, we need to…” McKenna wanted to say something when. Tamara appeared out of nowhere.
“Come on, guys…we should go. I need to check on Kara” Tamara said.
Jason and Mckenna went to the cashier and he paid for everything.
They made it outside the supermarket, when Jason spoke to his wife.
“Oma, you wanted to tell me something….oh wait, it’s Mom. She might be calling about Kara” Jason told her and picked up. “Hey, Mom”
“Jason, get off the street. Someone will make an attempt on your life…”
Mckenna first heard a gunshot.
Then she saw Jason push Tamara to the ground and everything became dark.. Slowly she was surrounded by it.
