My Disciple Wants to Tease Me Every Day - Chapter 63
: Shade
Even if Qing Yu hadn’t said anything, there were some things that Ning Guang would have begun to suspect. After all, ever since they escaped the Pure-Heart Precipice, everything had gone far too smoothly.
––––The narrow-minded Ming Cang had not sent anyone in pursuit, they were able to arrive at the lost treasure lands in time by a fluke, and they had entered the demon realm so easily. Sometimes, Ning Guang had to wonder if someone had smoothed the way for them. Listening to what Qing Yu said today, she was even more sure of her guess.
She tilted her head to look at Di Jiufeng, but seeing the worried expression on her face, Ning Guang did not want to bring it up any more.
She pinched her nose and lightly shook it back and forth. When she turned to look, Ning Guang said, “Don’t think about it too much. Since that person has already let some things slip, they will come to us sooner or later. Whether they are friend or foe, it can never hurt to be prepared.”
As they were talking, they had already arrived at the city lord’s residence: a majestic ancient compound towering in the very center of the city. For several miles around, there was nothing other than some rare plants, not a single building until the official residences of a few powerful nobles on the far perimeter.
The city lord’s residence stood singularly in the center, showing off its outstanding might.
When the three arrived, there was already someone waiting at the gate. He gave a few hasty greetings, then hurriedly brought them to the eldest young mistress’s boudoir.
It was a room in the southeast corner. The door was wide open, and there were people hurrying in and out.
When Di Jiufeng and the others approached, they heard a frail woman’s voice from inside the room.
“Daddy, I am an unfilial daughter, I, I cannot accompany you any longer.”
“Qiao-er, this is not your fault, it’s all daddy’s fault. If daddy hadn’t pressured you two, you would not have ended up in this state, it’s all daddy’s fault! Even if I have to stake this old life, I will save you.”
“No, it’s all due to my poor luck, daddy, I am going to die soon.. There is one question I wanted to ask you, if… if…”
The voices gradually grew quiet, then a hasty set of footsteps approached the door.
The city lord walked over, hands behind his back, brows furrowed into a deep crease, green veins popping in his temples. “Why are they still not here! Send someone to hurry them!” He yelled at the servants in a pressed-low voice, before he spotted Di Jiufeng and the others standing in the doorway.
He visibly started, then heard the servant’s frightened explanation. “City lord, they have already arrived, I was just about to report!”
Three young people, three young people who weren’t even of the demon race. Even though the city lord was desperate to save his daughter, he still had to hesitate. He looked them up and down, precaution clear in his eyes.
Not to speak of him, even a three-year-old child wouldn’t believe that someone could know his daughter had a beloved just from a mouthful of blood. He let them in only because he was sure someone had told them something. As this was a shameful matter, all the people of the estate had been given an order and would not talk, so there was only one other person who knew.
When he thought of that person, the city lord closed his eyes, veins jumping at his temple.
But a moment later, all of his explosive temper returned to calm. Like he had aged several years at once, his back bent and he gave a heavy sigh. “Everyone, let us step away to talk.”
The city lord was worried about his daughter, so he did not go too far. He looked back at the room, then set a barrier and turned to the three people: “Which one of you deduced that the way to save my daughter was marriage?”
“It was me.” Qing Yu replied.
The city lord nodded and continued, “If so, then I will be blunt. I can guarantee that, other than the people of the estate, not a single outsider knows about this matter. If you could deduce it, you may have heard some rumor. If I may be so bold to ask, is he still alive?
No need to evade, I did ask, I have no plans to do anything else to him. My daughter is already in this state, I only ask that he comes back to see her at least once. If he is not opposed, I would be fully willing to marry my daughter to him today. Before, it was all my fault, I should not have been so narrow-minded, I know I was wrong. I beg him not to hold a grudge against this petty one, and come back to see my daughter.”
The city lord gave them a deep bow. In showing his sincerity, he nearly bent his waist into a right angle.
Qing Yu startled a bit. When she figured it out, she immediately dodged away. She did not accept the city lord’s bow, and instead said, “You thought that I had seen your daughter’s beloved? You think I am here as a messenger for him?”
“Are you not?” The city lord replied in hesitation.
“Of course not.” Qing Yu shook her head. “I am a yao. When I first took form, I manifested a special gift, everything I know I saw through this gift. But, there is one thing I can tell you. Not only is that person alive, he even met your precious daughter today.”
Hearing this, the city lord turned and walked towards the room. But after taking only one step, he morosely pulled back his leg.
Di Jiufeng was an orphan, she did not know what a father was like. But, seeing this city lord, she suddenly felt a bit envious.
The city lord shook his head, his back stooped, looking a bit shriveled and weary. “I pushed them until one was dead and the other was seriously ill, they must hate me now. No matter what I say, they probably won’t trust me anymore. Doctor, you said that an illness of the heart must be treated with like medicine. Please, save my daughter. As long as she survives, I can do anything for you.”
Doctors were benevolent, and saving people was their duty. Qing Yu would not loot a burning house, so she agreed to give her an examination. She sent away everyone else and walked into the room with Di Jiufeng and Ning Guang.
An ashen-faced young woman laid on the wide canopy bed. She must have been sick for a long time–her cheeks were sunken, there were dark bruises under her eyes, and the hair spread out around her was as dry as straw. Seeing the three enter, the woman did not say anything. She had already gotten used to one treatment after another. With her eyes half-closed, she obediently stretched out her hand.
“I probably don’t have long to live, you needn’t take so much trouble.”
The woman was very pretty. Even while seriously ill, she was too beautiful to be described. But Qing Yu did not show any admiration. One side of her mouth curled and she coldly sneered, “If you are so determined to die, no one will be able to save you. Don’t worry, I won’t try to stop you.”
All the previous doctors had tried their hardest to cure her, but Qing Yu was different.
A doctor who didn’t want to save people was truly rare. Though this woman was sickly and weak, she still managed to keep her eyes open. “Aren’t you here to treat me?”
“Of course I am here to treat you, but I refuse to save someone determined to die.”
Qing Yu sneered, “You’d throw away your best years, just for a man? I don’t know whether to call you brave or stupid!”
“You, what do you know! He’s not, not, an ordinary man, he… he…” Qing Yu had truly been very blunt. The young mistress who had been spoiled since youth immediately got angry, but she had no strength. Her chest violently rose and fell, but she was unable to speak a complete sentence. Her complexion grew even worse, like she was about to breathe her last breath.
Qing Yu scoffed, but before she could speak, Di Jiufeng stole ahead and spoke up.
“Of course he is not an ordinary man, he is your beloved. But what about it? Your beloved is alright, and your dad has already conceded, he is willing to let you marry him. What else do you want?”
“My dad?” The eldest young mistress laughed, her expression managing to be both furious and heartbroken. “My dad has said that before, but in the end, he lured him in and killed him, then threw his body into the water. I will not trust him again, the only thing I can do now is die. If I die and become a spirit, I can be with him again.”
“Then go and die.”
As a mystic doctor, the thing Qing Yu hated the most was people who didn’t value their own lives. Some people wanted to live, but did not get the chance, while these well-fed and well-clothed people just loved to degrade their own lives. If so, then they could just go die. Only after you died could you understand how beautiful it was to live.
Qing Yu swept her sleeves and walked out, but right before she stepped over the threshold, she was stopped by a shade.
It was the person Di Jiufeng and Ning Guang had seen at the city gates.
He dropped to his knees with a plop and clutched Qing Yu’s hem. “Don’t go, please don’t go. I beg you, save A-Qiao.”
But Qing Yu ignored him and dragged her hem out of his grip. She used a bit too much force, and dragged the shade into a tumble.
The shade crashed heavily to the ground, and not-quite solid grey smoke immediately began to seep from his body. Seeing this grey smoke, Di Jiufeng and the others took on identical expressions of worry.
