My Disciple Wants to Tease Me Every Day - Chapter 76
Di Jiufeng had imagined many different ways the future could go. In most of them, she stayed with Ning Guang, or if not, she would die with her. She never doubted whether she could do it, because she had already set her baseline very low. She didn’t need a glorious and beautiful life, she only needed a life where she could see Ning Guang, and could hear her say “I’ll stay with you” before she died.
In fact, this sort of future was not easy to achieve either. But no matter what, it shouldn’t be the type of future the monk had seen.
It was too absurd. Di Jiufeng could guarantee that this sort of thing would never happen.
“Great Master, are you mistaken? I thought that no matter how bad the future could be, it wouldn’t end like this.”
The monk pulled his hand back, letting the glowing ball of memories return to his own head. “This humble monk cannot guarantee whether the future will end up like that, but whether you believe it or not, this is what I saw.”
Di Jiufeng: “Alright, but even if this is true, it hasn’t happened yet, has it? The future, the future can change, right?”
The monk did not deny it, but it was a long time before he replied, a faint trace of pity in his voice. “Though what my Heaven’s Eye sees is not the absolute truth, the few things I have seen have never gone amiss. Perhaps the future can change, but who can know if the changes you make are actually pushing fate towards its set destination?”
If this monk joined a debate competition, he would definitely be a top contestant. At least, with Di Jiufeng’s ability, she had no way to challenge his silver tongue.
She began to panic a bit, and she thought carefully about the future he had shown her.
“As you say, what should happen will always happen. Then, why show me this future? To ensure I’m prepared ahead of time? Or, does this mean you have some way to change how things will end?”
As she spoke, she looked up, the wings of hope beating heavily against her heart. They crashed back and forth, but she was afraid to let it show.
She sensed that this monk could do something, but she was also afraid it was a futile hope. She twisted her hands together, her hopes rising, then falling, unsettled like a skiff in the center of the ocean.
The February wind was very cold, and even spiritual energy couldn’t block the bone-piercing chill.
Di Jiufeng looked at the monk, but he was looking at the ground. The cold wind blew, bringing the dampness of a coming winter storm.
“Amitabha, this issue is not in fact difficult to resolve. Everything began because of love, and if you are willing to forsake your love, then every disaster can be averted. But…”
With a loud rumble, a piercing bolt of lightning finally split the sky in two. Dark clouds massed, gloomy and oppressive, washing the sky ink-black.
Di Jiufeng tightened her hands into fists, staring into the monk’s eyes.
Through the crashing peals of thunder, the monk’s voice pierced through to Di Jiufeng’s ears like a sharpened needle. He said, “Whether you can avoid this disaster depends entirely on whether you are willing to forget the ancient witch. As long as you are willing to forget your love, everything will change. The ancient witch will have a better conclusion. She will be able to revive the extinct witch tribe and climb once again to the peak.”
“But I cannot forget. Something like love, how can I just decide to forget?”
The monk fingered his prayer beads. His brow furrowed, then he began to speak more quickly, “If you wish me to, I can help you, the question of how to forget is not your excuse for retreat. You just need to tell me whether you are willing or not, everything else, I can help you accomplish!”
Di Jiufeng hesitated, and after a long time, said, “I…”
But before she could consider for long, the monk’s voice suddenly grew strict. “A stick of incense’s time is almost up! Miss, give me an answer!”
The thunder came faster and faster, dark clouds nearly pressing down on their heads.
At some point, the array which could drown out all sound suddenly broke. Wind wailed through the forest, pushing her heartbeat off its rhythm.
Di Jiufeng’s tongue felt numb. As soon as her hoarse voice left her mouth, it was scattered in the violent gale. “If I say I am willing, then will Ning Guang… will she never… remember me again? She will live a very good life, she just won’t remember… that a person called Di Jiufeng ever existed?”
Looking at her shaken appearance, a wave of pity finally washed through the monk’s heart, which was usually still as an ancient well. He almost couldn’t bear to nod.
But they were already running out of time. Listening to the thunder roaring in his ear, he finally said, “Yes, she will live a very good life, and it will continue to be good. And you will not suffer any major trouble, you will just be apart, each living your own lives.
You will not remember her, and she will not remember you. To you, you will just be restarting your lives, living the same way as before, possibly even better than right now. Do you want it?”
Di Jiufeng: “I…”
The peals of thunder came faster and faster, rumble after rumble, finally shaking some early drops of rain loose from the clouds. The raindrops were ice-cold, and Di Jiufeng shivered as they fell on her face.
She finally came back to her senses, with an unprecedented determination.
“I will not. I do not want to leave her, I am just this selfish, no matter the conclusion.”
The rain finally began to pour down like it was upended from a bucket, instantly soaking the ground. But, none of the dense rain landed on Di Jiufeng’s body, every drop blocked by the oil-paper umbrella over her head.
Ning Guang seemed to have ran here. Her chest was rising and falling hard, even the hand holding the umbrella was trembling faintly. “A-Feng, sorry I’m late, someone was holding me back.” Her ice-cold gaze shot out from her phoenix eyes, sawing at the monk’s body like a blade.
He did not try to persuade her any more. He looked at Ning Guang, then looked at Di Jiufeng, and finally gave a low sigh.
“You can have the core. A stick of incense’s time for a core, this was what we promised. Amitabha, I will be taking my leave. See you later, if we have the chance.” The monk carried the core over to Di Jiufeng with spiritual energy, then turned and stepped away, disappearing into the downpour.
Ning Guang didn’t know what had happened. When she hurried over, she only vaguely heard the last few words of their conversation.
When the monk had left, Ning Guang pulled Di Jiufeng into her arms, taking her ice-cold fingers in a single hard and pulling them into her sleeve. “A-Feng, what did you do? Why did he give the core to you?”
Di Jiufeng shook her head and said, “He didn’t do anything, he just showed me the future and asked me to make a choice. Ning Guang, did you know? In the future, you won’t kill me, and we won’t go into seclusion together, but I will strike you down. He has no reason to trick me, so this ought to be true, I will kill you.”
She motioned at Ning Guang’s chest, before Ning Guang caught her hand and stuffed it back inside her sleeve.
It was like she didn’t care about her death at all. With a crease in her brow, she said, “You are a Deity Transformation cultivator, aren’t you immune to the weather? How are your hands so cold?”
Di Jiufeng wasn’t embarrassed to say, “I was scared, I was scared by the future, and by that monk.”
Ning Guang let out an oh, then asked, “You said the monk wanted you to make a choice? What choice?”
“He wanted me to choose whether to forget our love.” She recounted the prior events to Ning Guang, intentionally leaving out her answer. She raised an eyebrow and looked at Ning Guang.
Ning Guang seemed as if she didn’t mind at all, but the hand holding the handle of the umbrella was gripping just a bit too hard. “How did you choose? You definitely would not forget me, right?”
“How could you think that? Do I seem that selfish to you?”
Di Jiufeng opened her eyes wide, reflecting on her own actions. Though she was not some benevolent saintess, she had been wholeheartedly good to Ning Guang. She had practically never done anything selfish, why would Ning Guang think that way?
“A-Feng, I’m not saying you’re selfish, but I thought that our love was more important than our lives, I thought we both agreed.”
“Humph, who gave you the courage?” Di Jiufeng was feeling a bit better, but she still forced a serious expression onto her face.
Ning Guang didn’t expose her either. Her brows relaxed, and she looked gently into her eyes. “I thought you were the one who gave me courage.”
Ning Guang held the umbrella and leaned over slightly, blocking all the wind and rain behind a layer of oil-paper. The rain came quickly and disappeared quickly, and after pouring for some time, it started showing signs of ceasing. The air was clear, and the gloomy oppressive atmosphere had disappeared. Ning Guang held Di Jiufeng in a half embrace, and they slowly descended the mountain path.
“A-Feng, do you believe the future that the monk showed you?” Ning Guang seemed to have thought of something. With a worried expression, she leaned over to ask.
Di Jiufeng nodded and said seriously, “I didn’t believe it at first, but now I think his words were not a lie. He has no reason to trick us, there is no benefit to him.”
Ning Guang: “En, he truly has no reason to trick us. But don’t you think it very strange?”
“Strange how?” Di Jiufeng opened her eyes wide. “That I would attack you? I also think I would not, but who can say about the future? The scene he showed me was too disconnected, it is hard to tell what happened before and after.”
Ning Guang did not refute her. She only added leisurely, “Not only this, but would you actually kill someone? Up until now, you have never killed, you have never even drawn blood. I think that a timid… mm, benevolent person like you would not attack lightly, not to speak of killing me.”
Di Jiufeng gave her a sideways look.
Don’t think you can hide it by changing your tone quickly, Ning Guang clearly wanted to call her timid. What about it, no one’s allowed to be timid these days?
Di Jiufeng was not very happy, and she turned away arrogantly. “How are you so sure I wouldn’t attack? Maybe it’s you who did something to offend me, I wasn’t able to take it, and I decided to clean house! I have never harmed anyone, but if I really want to attack, don’t think you can stop me.”
