My Disciple Wants to Tease Me Every Day - Chapter 85
: Nightmare
They had just agreed to go into seclusion together, and then all of this happened. Di Jiufeng felt that her displeasure was written even in her hair. She puffed up her cheeks and unhappily followed Ning Guang.
Ning Guang saw, paused, and poked her face. “You’re mad?”
Di Jiufeng let out a wilted humph, and started to throw a tantrum. “They knew we wanted to go into seclusion, and they still had to come and ruin everything. Is there something wrong with this person?”
Ning Guang laughed lowly and pinched the back of her neck. “Of course there’s something wrong with them, no normal person could stand being with Lin Yunyou.”
Di Jiufeng blinked. Suddenly understanding something, she turned to ask, “Gu Yunlu is the one behind this?”
Ning Guang nodded. “It’s only my guess, but I am quite sure. Don’t worry, it will be resolved soon. When everything is done, let’s find a place without any other people, no one will be able to come and disturb us, alright?”
“Of course, but Ning Guang, I remember you said…” Di Jiufeng mulled it over for a moment, her voice soft and a bit hesitant, like she was dissatisfied on her behalf. “I remember you said that you wanted to stand at the peak of the cultivation world and make everyone crawl at your feet. Actually, you are already very close to your goal, to give up just like that, would you be a bit… discontent?”
Ning Guang looked down at her. Her curled lashes blocked the sunlight, making her eyes fall into shadow, difficult to determine the emotions within.
Ning Guang didn’t speak for a while, and Di Jiufeng began to panic a bit. She truly wasn’t very ambitious, but she would unconditionally support anything Ning Guang wanted to do.
She tugged on Ning Guang’s clothes, but the next second, Ning Guang pulled herself away.
Her heart plummeted, like a little boat struggling on the surface of the sea had finally succumbed to the waves. She wanted to say something to save the situation, but it stuck in her throat, and she couldn’t make a sound.
“Qing Yu is right, you really are stupid.” Seeing Di Jiufeng looking like she was about to cry, Ning Guang finally sighed and pulled her into her embrace. “How do you still not understand? My cultivation world is you. As long as you live well and stay at my side, I am already standing at the peak. I never wanted anyone else to submit, I just wanted you to be safe and sound.”
Ning Guang stroked her hair again and again. In a daze, Di Jiufeng suddenly thought of the ancient wedding hair-combing custom: one stroke, to the end; next stroke, a devoted couple until the hair turns white.
[T/N: 一梳梳到底,再梳白发齐眉, part of a longer poem of which there are several versions.]
She ducked down to press their foreheads together, hot breath flowing across the tip of her nose, tangling into the flavor of peaceful days under the splendor of the daytime sun.
“I want to stand at the peak, not because I want others to submit to me, but because I don’t want anyone to bully you, I don’t want you to have to lower your head. But things are different now, you’ve become a demon, you’ll never return to the cultivation world again. In the demon realm, no one will get in our way, other than that Gu Yunlu.
So, do you think we still need to do those strenuous and fruitless things? After all, the ancient witch threatens their existence. Once we recover my true body, we might never be at peace again.”
Ning Guang didn’t speak very often, but every time she did, it was like a calming pearl placed in Di Jiufeng’s heart.
Her face went red, then redder, and in the end, even her neck burned pink. She grabbed tight to Ning Guang’s lapel and buried her head in Ning Guang’s chest. Di Jiufeng let out an “ahh”, her head going a bit dizzy with the heat.
She didn’t know whether this sudden dizzy spell was caused by the confession or whether she was a bit weak after first acquiring this body.
Di Jiufeng only knew that in that moment, her mind went blank. It looked like she was just embarrassed, but she actually lost all strength and collapsed against Ning Guang’s chest.
She leaned down very far, her head buried in her own lapel. Ning Guang did not realize it at first, only thinking she was being bashful. She laughed lightly, then put an arm around her waist and started to walk away.
The dizzy spell came on quickly and left quickly as well. When they stepped out into that field of black again, Di Jiufeng came back to her senses.
She pressed on her temples. Realizing that she didn’t feel tired, she tossed the matter to the back of her head, and tugged Ning Guang along to explore the dark.
Watching them confess their true feelings, Qing Yu felt as if her heart was filled by muddy air. She hated it so much, but she couldn’t look away. In the end, it was more admiration, admiration of their love so constant even in the face of death. If it was her, her who held such an affection, she would be smiling every day without end.
Qing Yu tsked, but her eyes did not move away a bit. She thought she must be a masochist to be able to keep! Her! Composure! In front of these two.
She looked at Ning Guang, then looked at Di Jiufeng. She absentmindedly noted that Di Jiufeng’s face seemed paler than usual. Perhaps she had seen wrong, and soon after, it was drowned out in a flustered blush.
Qing Yu didn’t pay it any mind, and followed them out of Shen City.
This dark had come strangely. A dark so complete they couldn’t even see the fingers of their own hands could not be an ordinary night.
“Don’t you think it’s very cold in this place?” As a cultivator who didn’t fear the heat or cold, Qing Yu had not felt cold for many years. But right now, not only did she feel cold, even her bones were frozen numb. When she took another step, she felt a piercing pain in her toes when her foot hit the ground. She hissed, and reflexively bent over.
“You feel cold? But I don’t.” Hearing her hiss, Di Jiufeng paused, wanting to turn and help her up.
But before she could, Ning Guang had pulled her into her embrace. “Don’t run around, it’s worse outside the perimeter of my ghostly energy. If I am not guessing wrong, this place is the witch tribe’s tomb. The ghostly energy is very dense, so she feels cold.”
Di Jiufeng said an obedient “oh”, turned to hang onto Ning Guang’s arm, and said, “Okay, it’s not that I’m cold, it’s that I have Ning Guang.” If there was light, Qing Yu would definitely see an expression of schadenfreude on her face. But even though she couldn’t see it, her raised tone was full of smugness.
Qing Yu’s hands itched, but Di Jiufeng’s guardian angel was right here, she would only lose control of her temper if she wanted to go to heaven.
“Forget it, I’m not going, take me back into Shen City.” Qing Yu panted, deciding to stop right there.
Di Jiufeng didn’t bully her any further, activating Shen City and placing her inside.
They were in a not-very-large corridor, a bit tight even for two people walking side-by-side. They walked along the corridor for a long time, coming across no side branches or forks in the path.
How long would they have to walk through such a strange place? And they couldn’t see anything, would they end up walking right into someone’s trap?
Di Jiufeng’s concerns were reasonable, and Ning Guang thought so as well. So, she stopped and activated the ghostly form.
“Let’s clear away all the ghostly energy. We can’t see anything because the ghostly energy is too dense. But, it will be rather slow, be patient and don’t run around.” She raised a barrier with ghostly energy and settled Di Jiufeng inside.
Then, Ning Guang released the bonds on the ghostly form, allowing it to devour all the surrounding ghostly energy.
Because the ghostly energy was very dense, even Ning Guang needed a lot of time to finish. Di Jiufeng stayed peacefully inside the barrier. She was a bit nervous at first, but seeing Ning Guang handling the situation with ease, she gradually relaxed and even fell asleep leaning against the barrier.
Perhaps affected by the ghostly energy, her sleep was not peaceful, and she began to dream again. In her dream, many scenes flashed by like viewing flowers from horseback, but she could remember none except a single scene which had embedded itself into her brain. It was a cloud of grey fog, dispersing with a poof under a dazzlingly colorful spell…
It was like she was trapped in the nightmare, replaying these scenes over and over, unable to escape.
She began to get obsessed. She wanted to save that cloud of grey fog, but no matter what she did, she couldn’t succeed. In the end, resentful energy began to brew, out of control.
Di Jiufeng was suffering, but she couldn’t wake up. Until at some point, she heard Ning Guang’s voice by her ear.
Some said that when you were unconscious, if a light appeared before your eyes, only if you kept following that light could you regain hold on life. To Di Jiufeng, Ning Guang was this driftwood on the ocean. She chased it, following that anxious voice on and on, through the dark, through thistles and thorns, until she finally stepped into the light of day.
Di Jiufeng’s eyes shot open, her pupils dilated, expression dazed. She was unable to regain her focus for a long time, a grey blur before her eyes, making the whole world look blurry and fake.
Ning Guang called her again and again, her voice frightened and helpless.
“I, I, I was just asleep, you don’t need to be worried…” Di Jiufeng finally got back to herself a bit. She grabbed Ning Guang’s hand, and comforted her in a gentle voice. Her face felt a bit cold, and when Ning Guang’s fingertips swept across it, they came away damp.
“A-Feng, what were you dreaming of? You were crying so hard, and I couldn’t wake you up.” Ning Guang’s voice was a bit hoarse, seeming even weaker with lingering fear in the empty corridor.
Di Jiufeng took her hand, sitting up with her assistance. “I dreamed of, I dreamed of…” She thought for a long time, only to realize that the scenes which had repeated over and over were so blurry as to be indiscernible. Only the scene of that grey fog, splitting apart with a “poof”, was so detailed she was unable to catch her breath.
“I can’t remember, but I seem to have seen a cloud of ghostly energy burst apart. It was such a strange dream, why would I dream about that?”
Ning Guang stroked her hair lightly, thought about it for a time, then said, “Perhaps it was Empathy. This is the witch race’s tomb and the ghostly energy is very dense, it may have caused you to see the scenes of their deaths. All the members of the witch tribe cultivate the ghostly path, the explosion of ghostly energy represents their deaths.”
“That sounds reasonable.”
In this bit of time, Di Jiufeng had recovered. She stood up and looked around. Without the obstruction of ghostly energy, she could take in this little place at a single glance. It was a stone corridor, long enough that she couldn’t see the ends. She could only spot a bit of light to the end from afar.
“Ning Guang, get up, let’s go.” She reached out and pulled Ning Guang up, then intentionally turned her thoughts elsewhere to toss that deep discontent to the back of her head.
It was too realistic, so realistic that the obsessive resentment took root in her heart, whispering to her to save that cloud of ghostly energy.
