My Ghostly Romance - Chapter 31
Standing behind the glass windows of the intensive care unit, Yang Mi couldn’t take her eyes away from the man lying in the bed with a tube stuck on his mouth, as the rhythmic and repetitive beep from the monitor continued to show his status.
Although he had his eyes closed, Kaisar still got away from danger and got to keep his life.
Aunt Wu had been crying while seated on one of the blue benches in the hospital near the ICU.
“How could this happen to young master Kaisar?” She questioned the decisions of the Gods watching them right now.
Yang Mi turned her head towards her and said, “Aunt Wu… Don’t cry anymore. The doctor already said that he’ll be okay.”
Aunt Wu raised her head, staring at the brave and beautiful young lady standing before her. She shook her head as she thought that even though this young lady before her sounded so confident and brave, trying to comfort this old lady, Yang Mi still couldn’t erase the wrinkles between her eyebrows and the redness of her eyes.
Without a doubt, Yang Mi felt the pain after seeing him almost slipping away from her grasps.
Earlier, while the doctors inside the ER was operating on Kaisar, Yang Mi got a warning from the system inside her. It told her that the target she needed to get her points was about to lose his life.
When she heard that, not only did she want to strangle the system for doing this to her, she also wanted to storm inside the ER and wake the man up.
Unfortunately, she was unable to do that.
And besides, she wasn’t frustrated that if Kaisar died, she would be sent to the dirtiest and most disgusting place – Hell. On the contrary, she felt emotions she shouldn’t feel. The hopelessness, grief, and pain that she long forgotten after millennia of being a ghost.
Staying outside the ER and waiting for news was the most painful thing ever. Not even knowing if that person behind that closed door could come out alive, you would already feel the hollow pit in your stomach.
So, when the system alarmed her once again that Kaisar’s life was about to be forfeited and handed over to the grim reaper, she did one thing she never thought she would do in this lifetime.
[Start of Flashback]
Standing at the rooftop where the helipad was, Yang Mi waited until she saw the black smoke descending from the sky.
A small wisp moved towards her, as if attracted by the unique aura wrapping her figure.
Looking at the black wisp, Yang Mi touched it with a finger and said, “Call your master. I need to speak with him.”
The wisp shook as if stunned by her request. But then, the wisp disappeared, only to be replaced by a larger form of smoke. It spiraled before her, forming a circle of endless darkness – a portal opened on earth.
Death has come.
She saw Death standing before her. He wore a black robe, covering his face and body from the naked eyes of the humans and the dead ones alike. As a thousand year-old being, even with the restrictions made by the system, Yang Mi could still see her old friend, Death.
“I did not expect that you would stand before me and call for me.” said Death to her.
Yang Mi smiled and said, “I didn’t come here to greet you.” Death raised his brows eager to know her intentions. Then he heard her say, “I came here to stop you.”
“Stop me?” His voice loomed over her, thick and devoid of emotions. Threatening, but enchanting. “You dare stop death? Stop me? Do you know what you’re saying and trying to do?”
Yang Mi nodded.
“And yet, you are willing to face my wrath just to save a couple of human lives? Have you gone soft or have you forgotten what these humans did these past millennium?”
How could Yang Mi forget?
Driven by their greeds and endless desires, humans destroyed and ruined themselves, pulling their own kind and even the world itself to destruction. Even she was pulled into their worst desires.
“I don’t want to save a couple of lives. I only need you to save one.”
[End of Flashback]
“Ms. Yang? Are you alright?” Aunt Wu asked her.
Yang Mi forced a smile and said, “Yes, I’m alright.” Turning her head aside, she asked the old housekeeper, “Why is Kaisar’s family still not here?”
Aunt Wu replied, “I already called them. They should be here any minute now.”
As if on cue, the elevator parted and revealed a group of people. Once the elevator opened for them, they stormed out of it and crowded the hallway.
When they saw Aunt Wu sitting on the benches, they picked up their paces and walked over to where Yang Mi and the housekeeper was.
“Aunt Wu! What exactly happened?”
“Is my son alright?”
“Wuu… why did this happen to uncle?!”
Several voices coming from the group simultaneously sounded. Even Yang Mi was pushed to the side by the group and shocked at their actions.
“Young master is alright now.” She heard Aunt Wu’s voice from the crowd. “The doctor said that his condition should still be checked, but he should be out of danger now. Even the doctors said that the young master is still favored by the Heavens and won’t face any repercussions because of his injury!”
After Yang Mi stopped Death from taking Kaisar, she made sure that not only was he saved from his apparent demise, he should also survive this incident without any problems in the future.
Everyone sighed in relief after hearing Aunt Wu’s words.
Aunt Wu noticed that something was amiss. She wasn’t sure what it was at first and ignored it.
But after a few minutes, she finally realized that the beautiful young lady who was with her earlier to look after Kaisar was gone.
She looked around her and in the hallway to see Yang Mi, but didn’t see her standing there. Kaisar’s mother noticed her unusual movements and asked, “What’s wrong aunt Wu?”
Aunt Wu turned to Madam Chu, “Madam, did you perhaps see the young lady standing beside me earlier?”
