“This is so terrible. I don’t want to stay in this school. I want to transfer.”
“How can you be so superstitious! I know the girl who jumped off the building. She didn’t pass her exams to go into senior high. She was repeating her classes this year. It must have been too stressful for her and she was unable to get through it. Don’t scare yourself or else you might fall sick.”
“But, someone jumps off the building every year…”
“Rumors are rumours after all without factual basis.”
…
The two girls beside me kept whispering. I moved my stiff legs with great difficulty to exit the crowd. With the help of teachers summoned by the supervisors, the students were ushered back into their own dorm.
Pushing open the door of dorm 108, I could see Xu Zixi sitting on her own bed at first glance.
The lights in the room were on, and her appearance was carved into my brain very clearly.
She wore a blood-soaked white dress with black hair hanging down on both sides of her cheeks. She stared at me with wide-opened eyes, seemingly frightened.
My heart sank sharply, and I took two steps backwards, but accidentally bumped into Cheng Fengfeng who had just returned.
“What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you see someone coming in?”
Cheng Fengfeng shouted at me impatiently.
I quickly apologized, “Sorry, I didn’t mean it.”
Looking at Xu Zixi’s bed again, it was empty.
With a sigh of relief, I mustered up my courage and entered the bedroom. Cheng Fengfeng and Bai Xiaomeng followed behind me.
Cheng Fengfeng stared at my face very intently for a few seconds and said in suspicion, “Your eyes are really special. Are the rumors about you really true?”
I hadn’t figured out how to reply yet when Bai Xiaomeng had already taken the lead, she said to Cheng Fengfeng with a startled expression, “Xu Zixi is dead. Why are you still in the mood to say such an eerie thing?”
Cheng Fengfeng shivered and whispered, “Xu Zixi is already quite spooky. Speaking of it, I feel that she was more terrifying than Ji Sixi.”
“Hurry up and stop the chatter. Quiet!” The voice of the supervisor came from the corridor.
Cheng Fengfeng and Bai Xiaomeng shut up.
I climbed into bed and fumbled for the blindfold in my pocket. As I was just about to put it on, I saw Ming Si walking in through the closed door.
He glanced at Cheng Fengfeng and Bai Xiaomeng who had been lying down. Then, he approached me in big strides.
Without saying anything, he went to get in bed and cuddle with me.
“It’s very packed,” I lowered my voice.
There was a smile in Ming Si’s eyes. His cold palms made their way around me whimsically, approaching spots where he shouldn’t touch. I was annoyed and shoved away his hands, shouting, “What are you doing?”
He smiled without anger, and said softly, “I’m just checking how my little Sixi is developing.”
“…”
In this situation, he still thought about this kind of stuff.
However, just as I stopped speaking, I realized that Cheng Fengfeng and Bai Xiaomeng were staring at me as though I was psychopathic.
I smiled bitterly, “It’s okay. I was just talking to myself.”
The two turned around and lay down again.
I rolled my eyes at Ming Si and turned my back to him.
He quickly approached me again, hugged me from behind, and placed his cold chin on my neck. It was so cold that I shuddered several times, but I didn’t push him away.
This night was too chaotic. But it felt that as long as Ming Si was there, I would be able to sleep peacefully. Otherwise, Xu Zixi would appear quietly in front of me again, and scare me off.
The lights in the girls’ bedrooms were on all night. Although the supervisor was maintaining order in the dormitory, there were still people looking through the windows to see the situation downstairs.
Soon there were sirens of police cars and muffled conversations…
In the end, I could only fell asleep when midnight came.
I felt like I didn’t get to sleep much by the time the alarm rang. I sat up immediately.
The sky was already bright.
Cheng Fengfeng and Bai Xiaomeng were lying on the bed. One of them whispered in her mouth, “So noisy. I will get up after another short nap.”
After whispering, the two turned over and seemed to fall asleep again.
I got out of bed and took the wash basin under the bed. Then, I went to prepare myself in the bathroom. There were always many people there, but I didn’t know why the most corner place was always empty. So I always washed myself up there, as though that place was reserved for me.
The suicide incident that occurred last night had spread rapidly throughout the school at the same speed as a virus. Many people were already talking about it after school.
As for me, I had my head on the table, trying to make up for the inadequate sleep, ignoring everyone else.
“Ji Sixi, the class teacher asked you to go to the office to see her.”
Su Rui’s voice sounded from above my head.
I opened my eyes and Su Rui stood at my desk with a serious face. He looked at me from above.
I asked him, “Why is the class teacher looking for me?”
“I’m not sure.”
He went back to his seat.
I got up lethargically and went to the teacher’s office slowly.
There was a teacher’s office on each floor of the teaching building with an average of three to four teachers in the office.
I knocked on the door politely, only entering after I was given permission from the head teacher.
There were a total of four teachers in the office, namely the class teacher, Math teacher, English teacher and Biology teacher. Besides the class teacher facing me, the other three teachers were all busy with their own affairs.
I approached the head teacher. She stared at me for a while, and sighed resignedly.
“Ji Sixi, how is your relationship with your classmates?”
This question puzzled me. After giving a short while to think about it, I replied, “It’s alright.”
“Cheng Fengfeng and Bai Xiaomeng from your dorm room came to me again. They requested to change their room. The other rooms are all full, I really can’t change it for them.”
“Oh.”
“Oh? What’s the matter with you? Are you so independent? The school is a big family. You should learn to get along with your classmates…” She muttered her lectures on me.
I quietly watched her words fly everywhere.
The head teacher was a very wordy woman. She was about thirty years old and dressed in a very flirty manner. I could even smell quite a heavy perfume from her from more than two meters away.
She muttered endlessly, causing the other three teachers to glance at me a few times.
*Ring…*
Finally, the school bell rang.
The head teacher stopped, took a breath, and waved at me, “Go back to class.”
“Oh.”
I trotted out of the office. Finally, my ears could be in peace for a while.
Making my way through the chaotic hallway, the class bells finally stopped ringing and I strode back to the classroom. And just as I sat down, the math teacher walked in with a textbook.
He was talking about practical questions but I couldn’t undertand a thing. It was almost the same as listening to Greek, so I just pretended to be focused as I stared intently at the blackboard.
Meanwhile, my thoughts had already fluttered elsewhere and I had long lost my concentration.
All I could think about whas of the hint that Ah Zi gave me before disappearing – You are next.
I really wanted to cry.
I didn’t know what kind of sin I had to have committed in my past life for me to encounter so many horrible things in my life now.
Why am I next?
