My (Monster?) Hero Life - Chapter 341
Kace hummed as he stared towards Stonefall. It had been some time since Lorget had left and now he was growing concerned that he had not heard anything from them. ‘Something is definitely going on…’ Kace frowned as he signalled Josh to be ready to move out. At that moment, a loud sound erupted from somewhere near the vampire’s residence.
‘Shit! They know!’ Kace cursed as he prepared himself for whatever the council would throw at them.
“Man the cannons! All hands! Prepare for battle!” Josh roared as he strode confidently across the deck.
“Captain! There’s an army headed this way!” Brenden shouted down from the crow’s nest.
Both Kace and Josh turned to stare at the budding city with narrowed eyes. Within moments they caught a glint of metal as the fires around town reflected off weapons and armour! They both understood that while they had been waiting that the vampires had been preparing to launch a fast assault. With the speed they were capable of, they traversed the streets to the gates before anyone else could react!
Kace’s eyes narrowed on Dao, who held Shadow and a battered Lorget in chains. Meanwhile, Sonja stepped forward while wearing her armour. She looked fully prepared for battle. Her eyes met Kace’s as a frown appeared on her face. She turned her head to find her daughter somewhere behind her.
“Dao! Release the prisoners!” Sonja commanded, causing those on board the freedom to frown. “Sophia, go! And be safe!”
Before Kace could register what was going on, Sonja commanded her army to about-face and block the gates! He could only stare at her back with a blank expression as Sophia swept Shadow and Lorget into her arms as their bindings disappeared! With one fluid movement, she leapt straight up onto the deck and flashed a smile at Kace.
“What? You didn’t think I would let you leave without me? Did you?” Sophia grinned as Lilly showed a dark expression from behind Kace’s back!
However, she was not the only one. Josh also wore a dark mask on his face as he stared at the vampire. He would have been happier without her as well, but that was just due to who she was related to rather than her as a person. He only dwelled on it for a second before spinning around and giving the order to set sail!
“What’s going on?” Kace raised an eyebrow as he glanced from Sophia to her mother standing in the front lines, preventing the gathering monsters from leaving Stonefall.
“Simple… Mother knows that it’s more important to support you than to mess around with your head. Despite how she acts sometimes, she really likes you. After your Tu’Thrag invaded the castle in the other realm, she had Dao search for a way to prevent it from happening again once she returned. She was pretty pissed that you felt the need to go behind her back.” Sophia chuckled as she covered her mouth with a pale hand as she recalled her mother’s expression.

“Oh… Wait, so she’s actually on board with this? What about the council? Won’t she face a backlash from them for helping out?” Kace’s frown deepened as the Freedom began to move, causing a chorus of shouts to erupt from the monsters trapped in Stonefall.
“She said to let them try. She won’t mind turning Elderbeard into kindling to warm herself up…” Sophia burst out into laughter when she caught sight of Lilly’s expression at that statement.
Lilly, on the other hand, was cursing internally. She knew fine well her grandfather would not approve of this choice of hers. So in her mind, it felt like Sophia had scored one over on her. She had been hoping Sophia would refuse to join them, that way she would have Kace all to herself. A sinister smile crept across her face as she stared at Sophia, who tried not to laugh at the subtle threat.
Although the girls thought they were being subtle, Kace spotted the look on Sophia’s face and guessed what was going on. However, he chose to ignore it in the hopes that they could put their differences aside and work together. As the Freedom pulled away from the city walls, Kace’s ears picked up the distinct sound of weapons being drawn. He could only sigh as he thanked Sonja for this opportunity.
However, he still felt that she was trying to make up for the damage she had done to their relationship with her games. Which, in a way, made him feel like she was still playing another type of game with him. ‘I guess that’s just how rulers have to be.’ Kace shook his head as he turned his attention away from Stonefall and out towards the plains and forests ahead of them.
They had barely begun to move when they heard a loud humming noise, and once again, Brenden’s voice could be heard delivering more bad news!
“Sir! The airship is taking off!”
Kace sharply inhaled as turned to squint at the fortress rising into the skies. Had Shagrat ordered it to give chase to them? The firepower that Gyn had packed into it was no joke! Even if Josh and his crew could survive, the rest of them would be screwed if it opened fire! Kace had expected Gyn to refuse to allow it to be used like this!
Then again, Gyn would probably just look at it as another field test! So maybe he should not have placed that much faith in him. Josh swiftly gave the orders for the ship to prepare for a broadside volley. However, the airship rose so high that the Freedom’s cannons would be useless against it!
Just as Kace was beginning to think that things already looked hopeless, he saw the treants from over the walls making their way towards the gates. ‘It looks like they couldn’t sit still. I hope Sonja can find a way out of this.’ However, before they could reach their destination, the airship overhead fired a round into the ground in their path!
Kace’s mind was all over the place at this sight. It seemed that the airship was helping to cover their departure! Did that mean that the goblins had also sided with his decision? Of course, that would make sense. Out of all the races, the goblins were undoubtedly the ones he was closest to after all they had been through together.
A glider swooped down from the behemoth in the skies to pass by overhead. In the chair sat Vaskra. The old hag waved at him with a sad expression before she turned back to reinforce those aiding Kace. Although he should feel happy at the show of support for him, wanting his own independence, he could not help but grimace. Right now, his departure looked set to spark a civil war between those he had helped to bring together.
He had the feeling that Stonefall would not look the same upon his return. He could only hope that they settled their differences before too much blood got spilt. By his side, Grugda, Sophia and Lilly also wore dark expressions as each of them wondered what would happen to their kin. They stared at the city falling behind them as the airship suddenly opened fire!
The four of them felt their heart sink as they realised that any hope for negotiation had just gone up in flames. Whoever came out victorious in this fight would most likely be the one in control of the monster resistance from now on. The Freedom suddenly started to gain speed, and before long Stonefall was nothing but a small dot on the horizon.
“What now?” Sophia asked, as her tone became subdued. She had not expected for things to escalate like this.
“Now? We try and actually find the other pillars. The sooner we get rid of the heroes the better it will be for everyone.” Kace replied with a low growl.
“Couldn’t we have done that with everyone else?” Sophia frowned as she glanced at him.
“It would have taken too long. The army takes time to cover the ground. During that time, the heroes become aware of their movements. It’s better if we act like a fast-moving group to get to our objectives behind their lines. Less hassle that way.” Kace shook his head as he explained his reasoning.
“What do we do if we come across other monsters?” Sophia’s frown deepened as she wondered about that. “Do we ignore them to stop from exposing ourselves?”
“No, we help them and raise as much hell as we can for the heroes in the process…”
