My (Monster?) Hero Life - Chapter 342
The Freedom sailed across the land, passing by monster settlements along the way. Curious orcs, trolls, ogres and other races stared at the ghostly ship in awe. ‘Why haven’t I seen any of those races in the battles?’ Kace wondered as he laid eyes on three new monsters. ‘Hell, the ogres alone look like they would be a great help…’
He frowned as he stared back at them as they sailed over a grassy hill. Josh dished out commands as he randomly chose their direction. Although he had seen a lot of ports when he was still human, he did not know too much about areas further inland. As it turned out, Lilly was the most well-travelled out of their group.
This was due to how the treants would migrate. Often humans would look at a group of trees and think, ‘I’m sure they weren’t there yesterday…’ Of course, they were right. Lilly offered up several destinations they could try out towards the western border of the monster nation. Naturally, most of them were forests though, and only a few had settlements nearby.
“We should go to the Silver forest.” Kace said as he listened to Lilly and Josh’s conversation behind him. “It’s close enough to the border that the settlement there may have monsters that used to live further west. With a bit of luck, maybe one of them can point us in the right direction.”
Josh stroked his chin as he thought about it before finally agreeing. Under Lilly’s direction, he expertly commanded the crew to change course. Setting a heading for the Silver forest. The ship lurched as it swiftly turned and sped off on its new heading. Kace sighed as he wondered how long their journey would take. After all, it felt like there was still so much to do.
‘We have to find the other gates, a way to destroy them, find the other pillars and beat back the heroes…’ Kace’s frown deepened as he wondered who he would become by the end of it. What would he do once this world was free from humans? It was a question that constantly plagued him. He turned his head as he heard footsteps approaching. Only to be met with a soft scent and a warm smile on Lilly’s delicate face.
“It’ll take a few days to get there. You should rest up…” Lilly beamed as she stared into Kace’s eyes.

Meanwhile, on a hill not far from the Silver forest…
A demon with indigo eyes stared at the small settlement in the distance. ‘This should be the place that elf mentioned… Which means I should already be within the borders of this monster nation, as he called it. Good!’ The demon grinned as a slight skip appeared in his step as he made his way towards the village.
He waved a hand in the air, and a sinister-looking flute appeared. With a broad grin, he pressed it to his lips and began to play a bright melody. The sound carried over the hills and through the forest. Before long, the faces of small goblins and large ogres appeared on top of the flimsy log walls surround the village. Their eyes went wide as they stared at the stranger, making his way alone towards them.
Their natural instincts warned them that this demon was dangerous. Though, none of them had even seen a demon before, so a debate was going on as to what race he belonged to. A shiver ran down their collective spines as the demon grew close enough for them to see his indigo eyes. Although he wore a smile as he played his flute, his eyes were cold and calculating.
When he reached the open space that was used as a gateway, the music suddenly stopped. The demon twirled the flute between his fingers as he eyed the wary monsters. A bright laugh escaped from his lips as he looked at them one by one. ‘Funny, last time I came to this realm, monsters were not so thoughtful. They attacked me on sight. They sure have changed since the war.’
“Hello!” The demon yelled with a friendly smile that made the monsters feel like he looked even more menacing than before. “I’m here looking for a friend and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.”
The elderly goblin in charge of the settlement stared at the demon as it cocked its head. He knew that it was his place to talk to this strange creature, but he did not want to paint a target on his back if it turned out the demon was hostile! ‘Why me…’ The goblin groaned. If it had been a few days earlier it would have been the previous elder’s responsibility!
The large meaty hand of an ogre pushed him forward, causing the demon to focus on him. The look he received was one that made him feel like he was prey trapped before a predator. The goblin swallowed a lump of saliva as a bead of sweat trickled down his forehead.
“Sir… I doubt we’ll know this friend that you speak of. Hardly anyone travels to this little village of ours except for the heroes in the area.” The elder stammered as he watched the demon’s expression for any hint that he had offended him.
“Oh, don’t worry! I’m sure you’ve heard of him. He’s rather famous around here, you see.” The demon let out a wide grin, showing his immaculate teeth in the process. “I’m looking for where I can find Kace. The chimera that’s been giving the heroes a beating all over the place…”
The monsters frowned when they heard this name. Of course, they had heard of him! He was a big part of the reason that they had a nation to call their own! The problem was that none of them had ever seen him. The last they had heard he was somewhere up North, but was it really safe to tell this demon that?
The elder groaned internally as he thought up a way to take care of this dangerous creature in front of them without getting the village involved. ‘If I send him to Stonefall… They should be able to handle him!’
“Yes… Yes… We know who you mean. I’ve never met him myself but from the little news we do get, he can usually be found in Stonefall when he’s not on the battlefields. That’s the best place to go if you want to find out his current location…” The elder struggled to maintain a friendly smile under the demon’s gaze.
“Is that so? How long will it take to get there?” The demon stroked his chin as he glared at the goblin.
“Hm, maybe a few months on foot. It’s in that direction over there.” The elder pointed a slim finger with a blackened nail off in one direction.
“A few months you say?” The demon sighed as his gaze swept over the crowd. “You! Step forward!”
The ogre he suddenly pointed at began to tremble as he glanced around for help. However, the others all averted their eyes and pretended not to notice! ‘Better you than me!’ Was what they were thinking as the ogre took a reluctant step forward.
“You’ll carry me to Stonefall! My feet hurt, and it’s already been a long journey. Thank you for volunteering!” The demon let out a broad smile as if he were truly thanking the ogre.
However, the ogre felt sick to his stomach when he heard that! This stranger wanted to treat him like a common horse! The ogre was furious and clenched his fists. His eyes narrowed on the demon as his body trembled! The other monsters who saw that started to panic internally. ‘Don’t you dare get us all killed! Isn’t it fine to sacrifice yourself for us all!’
The ogre stomped forward until he stood right in front of the demon. With a heavy gaze, he glared down at the smaller creature. Then, suddenly, a wide smile broke out on the ogre’s face as he began to run his hands together as he got down on one knee!
“My pleasure!” The ogre grumbled in his best boot-licking voice as he nodded happily towards the demon!
‘That was close! I almost got myself killed!’ His anger had gotten the better of him for a moment. That was, until he stood right next to the demon. The pressure he gave off at close range was much worse than when he had been several feet away! ‘Call me horse from now on! That’s what I’ll be if it lets me keep my skin!’
