At around half past eleven, the gang finally decided to disperse. Bidding them goodbye, Susan stood alone on the pavement outside the pub, waiting for her car. But there was no sign of it. Hugging her jacket more closely to avoid the cold wind, she tried calling the driver many times, but he didn’t pick up. There was a taxi stand at the other side of the road, a few feet from there. After taking a few steps towards the taxi stand, Susan felt she was being followed. Turning around, she could not see anybody. Resuming her walk, she quickened her pace. Behind her she could hear several footsteps and whispers.

Susan felt her heart beating faster as anxiety and fear gripped her. At this hour, the road was almost deserted, she didn’t have anybody to turn for help. A feeling of helplessness dawned on her.

Shit! Thinking she has trapped herself, she turned around slowly, to find 4-5 men leering at her, smelling of alcohol.

Susan tried to run through the gap between a tall and a short man, but a rough hand immediately caught her around the waist and pushed her down. She landed face first on the road. The dirt on the road scuffed her fair skin. Hearing them laughing mirthlessly, her heart trembled. What exactly were they trying to do?

Suddenly she remembered the pepper spray in her bag, that Sofya had always told her to carry with her, in case of an emergency. Taking the little bottle out of her bag, she got to her feet again. There was a large gash on her knee, which had started bleeding and it hurt quite a lot.

Swinging the pepper spray, she shouted at the men, as boldly as she could, trying to scare them off ” Go away! ”

The men looking at each other, doubled up in laughter. She really thought she could outdo us?

A rather tall man, having gristly beard, his cheeks red, made a move towards her. Susan sprayed the little bottle with her entire might, hoping against hope, to drive him away.

” Ouch! F**k man! ” the man bellowed, covering his eyes as he felt the sting and pain.

There was an uproar from his friends, as they came forward. The second man met similar fate. But Susan was not so lucky the next time. Just as she was about to tackle the other two, he had twisted her arm, pinning her against the wall.

” You are one wild cat! ” the man moaned in her ear, while the other laughed. He reeked of alcohol and had a stinky mouth, which made Susan want to puke.

” I will enjoy f**king you! ” With that he ripped off her blouse in half, which revealed her pink bra underneath.

” Rascal.. ” Susan screamed as her eyes filled with tears, blurring her vision. But try as hard as she might, she could not escape it. The man next started tracing her back with his mouth. As his hand was about to touch her butt, she felt the pressure off her. Turning around, Susan saw that the man had been yanked off her, thanks to her saviour.

Susan slid to the ground, her face streaming with tears, unable to believe what had happened.

” Susan? ” said a familiar voice.

Looking up, she saw it was Advay. He was crouching in front of her, his hands trying to steady her already shaking shoulders. There was a softness in his brown eyes that she had not witnessed in a while. Unable to control herself anymore, she burst into tears, tightly hugging Advay as he comforted her.

” Shhhh! It’s all right, you are all right. ” He tried to placate her, but his voice was pained and emotional. Seeing her pitiable condition, he promised himself that he would punish those who had tried to hurt her.
