My One And Only - Chapter 20 Beautiful Memory
Sure enough, as they walked out of the office into the deserted hospital corridor, the assistant had new orders. He was to go to the site of incident with some men and inspect it thoroughly for any clues, watch the surveillance camera in the street for any video that might have been recorded and report back to him.
As the assistant walked away, Arnav went through to meet Susan. She was sitting on the bed, her back resting against pillow, as she looked out of the window in the dark night.
With the sound of footsteps, she half smiled when she saw Arnav walking in. However, Sofya was not there. Where the heck was she?
” How’s Advay? ” This was the first question that Susan asked Arnav after he had sat down. Her eyes twinkling, she gazed at him expectedly. Arnav couldn’t help but notice that she had the exact same eyes as that of Sofya, black and almond shaped.
” He will live. ” Arnav answered in a slow voice, his eyes cold and empty, a frown on his face.
Shouldn’t she be more concerned about herself?
He had some inkling of the fact that Susan and Advay had known each other from beginning, before even their marriage was decided, but he couldn’t see how he could ask her this now, in such a situation.
” Thank God. I don’t know what made him — ”
” Protect you? ” Arnav smiled dangerously. ” Maybe it’s because he loves you too much to care about his own life? ” He asked grimly, watching her closely for her reaction.
Susan who had been drawing her hand towards the bedside table to take the glass of water, knocked it over after hearing his words. The water spilled all over the floor. The shattering of the glass could be heard clearly in the silence of the night.
Susan froze, her eyes wide. This was clearly unexpected, especially from Arnav. How had he grasped it so quickly? They had promised not to talk about it, ever. Even her own sister didn’t know about this.
Arnav chuckled. Susan’s actions just confirmed his suspicions. However, before he could reply, his phone rang.
” What is it? ” he asked quietly.
As he listened to whatever was being told by the speaker on the other end, his eyes darkened and he clenched his fist. He had expected this much. They had to be professionals.
” Come back. ” He ordered, cutting the call. Glancing at Susan, he ordered her sternly, ” Rest now. I will come back later. ”
Susan looked wistfully as Arnav strode out her room, quietly closing the door behind her. She closed her eyes, leaning back on the pillow, a single tear squeezing out of her eye, thinking about 4 years ago.
A medium height girl with two ponytails was running in the park, laughing wildly as the summer breeze whipped her hair. She was being chased by a boy, lean and lanky having brown eyes.
As she neared the swing, the boy suddenly caught up. Turning her slowly towards him, he began removing the leaves stuck in her hair. The girl giggled harder, making it more difficult for him.
” Suzy, stand still! ”
Wrapping her arms around his torso, she gazed up at him, black eyes to brown eyes.
” And that’s why I love you! ” she replied, kissing him on both cheeks, leaving him red in face.
It was a Memory, a beautiful Memory!
” And that’s what happened. ” The assistant concluded, giving the full report. There was a silence. Arnav didn’t speak for a whole minute. He was staring out of the window of his office, watching the sun rise above the horizon. It was almost 6 in the morning.
” Very well “, he replied, coming out of his daze.
” Make sure their needs are catered to, especially Susan’s and call me as soon as you come to know about Sofya. ”
The assistant nodded and left for the hospital. As he got into the car, he thought about yesterday night.
Yesterday night had been a big mistake.
He had gone to the scene at around 2 am. When he reached there, it was almost deserted, the police had not been there yet. There was nothing there, not even a soul in sight, except for a few shards of glass and blood splattered here and there on the wall. Next he had gone to the nearby police station to withdraw the footage from the surveillance camera on the street. As warned by Arnav, the footage for that specific time was wiped entirely clean, it was all a blur. The department dubbed it as a technical glitch. Same thing happened with the camera of a posh restaurant, that was located exactly in front of that alley. The entire feed was deleted. When the manager of the hotel was questioned, he adamantly stated that he had no idea about it.
Arnav had already warned him about it. It maybe staged to look like an accident, but it was actually a well planned crime. Someone with a motive might have done this, a motive to defame and hurt.
