Nightmare System - Volume 1 Chapter 52 Portal To Home
As the sour little devil started preparing the arena for their fight, Hell ate his fill and started walking around the castle, eventually finding his way into the dungeons. This place wasn’t solely for prisoners as some of the cages had wild animals within. There weren’t too many prisoners here, but Hell still followed the yelling in the distance to see what was happening.
“I don’t know, I swear I don’t know!” a woman yelled.
“Don’t yell that much, girl, how will I hear your screams if you lose it before the torture starts?” The demon who so sinisterly spoke looked to be yet another sub-demon with a lab coat and tons of blood on.
“Start with me instead, you coward!” a man yelled this time.
Hell finally turned the corner and saw the situation unfolding here. A disgusting imp-like demon with a doctor’s coat was about to torture these two poor souls. Funnily enough, Hell had recognized both of them.
“Ada, Sam!” he yelled and cheerily walked up to them. Both looked dehydrated and starved.
Ada turned to where the voice came from and saw a man walking toward them with a robe and a smile on his face. Her eyes were still blurry with tears, but she soon saw Hell.
“Hell! Help us!”
“Stop!” Samuel yelled. He was agitated at the very sight of hell, even in his circ.u.mstances. “Can’t you see he is completely unharmed and well? He doesn’t even have weapons out. He is with them. Probably came to enjoy our suffering.”
“Ah, King Hell, I have heard of you already. Since you are an esteemed guest introduced to us by Pride, I would love to show off my torturing skills to you,” the imp doctor said with a respectful tone.
“You shut up for a moment,” Hell said without looking at the sub-demon, who promptly shut up, not directly looking at Hell out of fear. An esteemed guest of Cain was far superior to himself, after all.
“I am indeed in cahoots with these demons.” Hell pulled the chair in the corner and sat on it, putting one leg over the other. He seemed to be in a relaxed position.
“I told you before, as well, this demon-” Samuel started yelling until he was shot with a small dose of Hell’s Gaze of Pain and stopped talking.
“Our interests are temporarily aligned, that’s all,” Hell said and added: “Do you want me to save you?”
“King Hell, you must be joking!” the imp interjected but Hell’s slightest glance at him managed to shut him up again.
“Well?” he asked.
“We-” Samuel started talking but was cut short due to Ada’s bawling: “Hell, please save us! We were thrown into this world with an impossible mission, even surviving in the jungle was far beyond our abilities!” Ada no longer cared about looking bad. She was miserable and would hold onto any branch offered to her.
Ada was visibly shaken, perhaps molested, starved and was now about to be tortured. Samuel looked the same with his ripped clothes. It was a wonder they didn’t kill themselves.
Hell used the vampire claws ability to shatter the shackles binding Ada. It wasn’t a strong ability compared to his other ones, but the claws were still very durable and worked well in certain conditions.
Ada was so happy that she hugged Hell and wouldn’t let go for some time. Eventually, she looked at her hands and realised she was really free! After basking in the freedom for another moment, he looked at Samuel who was still bound in chains.
“Hell, what about him? I know you had some differences, but perhaps you could save him from here. That’s bound to change things.”
Hell chuckled. “Bound to? Good one.” Hell then turned to the imp standing quietly in the corner, telling him to feed her the best food available, and that she could sleep in Hell’s room for now. Hell also didn’t forget to threaten the creature in case something happened. He waited until they both left the cell to talk again.
“How are you doing, Samuel?” Hell asked.
“Screw you.”
“What exactly did your ‘Identify’ ability say about me?” Hell wondered. That was the exact reason Samuel looked at him as if he was the devil and immediately called the guards.
Samuel stayed quiet but continued locking eyes with Hell.
“Did it say that I had relations of a s.e.x.u.a.l nature with thine life-giver? I mean, because I would never.” Hell chuckled at his own joke and asked another question at him.
“Are you sure you would like to stay here? Ada won’t be able to save you.” Hell may have plucked her from the dungeons, but there was no real need to look out for her.
“It said that you were the Man of Cursed Spirit. It said you were the flower that would poison the entire well. You will bring utter death and destruction wherever you go.”
“That’s it?” Hell burst out laughing. “Well, Samuel, good talk. I’ll see you again if they decide to throw away your corpse instead of eating it.”
Hell started walking out of the cell with slow steps and with each step taken, Samuel got more anxious. They were only left in the dungeon for a week and the torture hadn’t even started, but he had almost mentally collapsed already.
“Wait!” Samuel yelled behind him as he forced out those words, however, Hell kept walking with slow steps still. After betraying his pride and yelling after him, the walls around his heart had started crumbling one after another. He yelled again, he yelled louder.
“Hell, please don’t leave me here!”
Even though it was moments ago, images of how relieved to be saved Ada was flashed in front of his eyes. His panic had broken through the ceiling already. He watched his one chance at life and being saved from cruel torture by literal demons was currently walking away. As Hell turned the corner and Samuel could no longer see him, he started screaming his heart out. He started cursing his fate as he cried out.
Hell waited for a few minutes at the corner until his voice was gone and the screaming stopped. Glancing inside the cell, he saw Samuel hanging off the chains like a corpse, his wrists already bloody. He must have tried to escape by struggling with all his strength. Of course, it was fruitless.
Hell then entered the cell again with a grin on his face, thinking it was good enough punishment for Samuel calling the police on himself. ‘Snitches get utter emotional devastation’ Hell thought to himself. Then again, killing Claude and his posse was quite useful, so he was, in fact, wasn’t very bothered by it. Nonetheless, it required punishment.
“Will you help?” Samuel weakly asked, raising his head to see the kindle of hope returning to his damp cell.
“Sure, since we are such good pals,” Hell said and similarly shattered his shackles. The imp doctor came inside at this point, seeing the other prisoner being freed.
“But why? I could just unlock them! Why would you destroy them?!” the imp went mad for a moment, speaking awfully fast.
“Hey, small thing, the same deal for this guy. But I don’t want this idiot near my bed.”
“Yes, Esteemed Guest.” The imp gestured Samuel to follow him. Hell stopped the broken prisoner before he left, and really considered saying this was all a prank and that he would lock him up again, but he had something else to say.
My spear. Do you still have it?”
Samuel was distraught still, but he forced the words out and replied: “You sold it to me. It’s a glaive.”
“Well, but since we are such good pals and all,” Hell said again and stared at Samuel.
“Of course, King Hell,” he said in a defeated tone and pulled out the weapon from his inventory. This meant Samuel was at least level 40.
“Glaive of Hans the Undying,” repeated Samuel, do whatever you will with it.
In the meantime, the imp was shocked beyond belief to find out one of these two humans could just create items out of nowhere. He was a lot more respectful to Samuel as he took him to the kitchen also.
Hell looked around the cell and realised instead of taking his promised portal time with his little brother, he had walked all over the castle, finding anything to busy himself with. He had spent tens of minutes using his Branding ability on his various body parts. Anything to spend the time.
“I am stalling, aren’t I?”
Hell looked at his hands, they looked perfect. They didn’t look like the hands of someone who had mowed down thousands with his sword and enjoyed it.
“Perhaps, I am scared you will learn what I did and be disappointed.”
This was the real world now, he no longer killed things in his dreams. This was truly the real version of the Impossible Nightmare System Hell was cursed with, an unending nightmare. That is, if you let it control you. Hell gathered his courage and got up. He walked outside of the dungeons, deciding to talk to his brother first.
On his way to finding Cain, he started fantasising about what he could get out of this simple part of the deal. Perhaps he could spend a week or two back home, or even if that was impossible, he may be able to talk to his little brother for hours. There were so many new things he had explored in this world that he would love to tell his brother about.
He was lost in thoughts still when he encountered Cain again.
“Are you here for the portal?” Cain asked. He was reading a book written in a language unknown to Hell.
“How long can I stay there?”
“One day. I won’t be able to locate where I opened the portal to after that. I can find the general location of your brother using you as a catalyst since blood draws one another.”
“Understood,” Hell said. He had no c.o.c.ky remarks or his usual enthusiasm. He was both happy and nervous to be seeing his brother again. He had been gone for some time now, he would have to explain himself, first.
“King Hell!” Annette popped up from the corner. Jack showed himself soon after and spoke:
“We will kill any and all obstructions.”
“Miur? What about you?” Hell asked.
“As my King commands,” he answered. As experienced as he was, even Miur had never stepped into another dimension, a new world.
“Would that be an issue?” Hell asked Cain.
“Of course not. Anything for my friends.” Cain’s smile seemed innocent enough, but his eyes were not as amicable. It was all right, as long as he held his end of the bargain, Hell didn’t mind.
“All right, open it.”
Cain walked up to Hell and motioned him to extend his hand. Cain casually pulled out a knife and slit his wrist again.
“It needs to be fresh, keep the wound open,” Cain said and started casting a spell. Mana flowed out of Cain like a waterfall, slowly forming a vortex in the air. Hell had to keep slashing his wrist every few seconds due to his passive healing ability.
Cain also handed Hell an amulet with a red jewel embedded in it. “Infuse your mana in it if you somehow manage to miss the portal. But it is a very valuable tool that will be erased after one use. I want it returned.”
‘I may heal but it still hurts, damn it.’ Hell thought to himself, keeping the blood flowing.
“It is opening, get ready!” Cain yelled. Even though he could indeed create portals even to other worlds, it took a lot of Cain. “I can only keep it open a few seconds, don’t miss the chance!” Cain yelled again. “I will open the portal in the exact same place in 24 hours!”
The portal finally started forming from a small dot in the air. It grew larger and larger until finally, it formed black doors. The doors opened inwards and Cain yelled once more. “Go in!”
Hell, Miur, Annette and Jack all jumped inside. The smell of the soil after rain was still lingering in the air, the first thing Hell noticed when passed through. The group looked around and only saw the sun in the clear sky and the trees they were surrounded by.
Of course, Hell knew of this place. It was a little distance from where he killed Vaun’s friends and made him submit. He could find his way to his house easily from here.
“I wonder what day it is,” Hell mumbled.
“Is this where you came from, King Hell?” Annette asked, standing uncomfortably close to Hell. Her shining, innocent eyes perfectly concealed the murderous creature within.
“Indeed, I-” Hell’s sentence was cut short, hearing some sort of alarm going off. A transparent digital message suddenly appeared out of thin air.
