Number One and Rising - 2 Lesson on Nature
The portal did indeed take them to the front of the school, and the second he crossed through the portal closed leaving them in an empty courtyard. She and him began running to their classroom hoping to make the bell, they had a better chance than Victorian anyhow. Racing through the old halls Cecilia spoke up, “Hey, who was that Harbinger guy.” They both took a hard turn sliding on the floor, “That was the number ten spot on the Board, Harbinger. He is also in second command here at the school. He is one of the most powerful people you’ll meet, and I hope for your sake you don’t meet anyone more powerful than he.”
They stopped in front of their room and she was panting, “You sound like you speak from experience,” he turned and looked at her, “I don’t.” He pulled the door open and walked in. Inside sat a number of unoccupied seats, in the front hung up on a wall was a large chalkboard and a leather chair sat beneath it. There classmates turned towards them. There were only three others each with their special quirks. “Oh, wouldn’t you know it, they actually showed. Victorian?”
A male student got up and walked to them, this was Randy, a bigger student and much broader than he. He specialized in Manipulation Magic, at his level he can effectively melt or cool any substance to different states of matter and has even changed items completely a few times. He has the potential to create things out of nothing, store things inside his body, or manipulate the properties of items to make them magical or otherwise, similar to the purple glowing devices on the side of the train. He was practicing on a spoon which he noticed he had turned into brass.
At the front of the class was a quiet and shy girl named Emily. She had long dark hair and pale skin, but she could change those to her liking. Her power was a form of Manipulation called Live Copy. She waved at him and Elias noticed the huge pupils of a cat looking at him, she returned to reading. Her potential was only limited by her own imagination. He had seen incredible transformations with that power, but at her level she could only successfully transform small parts of her body.
The last student was a guy by the name of Brody. At the moment he was a huge as a bodybuilder who hasn’t skipped leg or arm day since he was a child. He had an ability called Exaggerate, it allowed him for a time to over exaggerate something of his own bodily makeup. It allowed him to become overly handsome, strong, literate, smart, and other things. The beginning of the school could not control when he changed he would randomly become nicer, meaner, distant, and other behavioral challenges. He waved and reverted back into his original image of a scrawny short kid with red hair and placed a pair of thick glasses on his face. These were a band of misfits if he could ever tell, but it beat who he had regularly met on a daily basis before.
Near the chalk board a door had swung open to reveal a middle aged man walking into the room with long unkempt black hair. The man looked at the pair and Randy slid back into his chair. When Randy sat down he accidentally turned the chair into stone. He straightened and turned it back. The mans glance turned back at them, Cecilia had begun to explain their absence but the man held his hand up, “It’s already been explained to me. It seems you caught the eye of the Vice principle.” Everyone turned around to look at them.
This was their teacher, or rather their overseer, Mr. Raleigh. Elias shook off their eyes and sat down with a huff, “It was Cecilia that did most the fighting, I was Victorians punching bag.” Cecilia hung her head and sat down next too him, Mr. Raleigh had noticed, “Mrs. Sullivan, you outsmarted one of the top battle team in the school. You made a smart move there, good job.” She smiled a little but still seemed down. It was probably because he had gotten injured.
Raleigh picked up some chalk and scribbled something down. When he had finished there was a large word drawn on the board; Elemental. “I’m sure everyone knows what Elemental magic is. Many believe this is a basic magic and it is for beginner levels. True as that may be they are used in all other more complicated magic. An example, Randy, what Element do you think your magic is based on. Randy thought about it for a second as he rubbed his chin. “I would suppose it would be Earth?” Raleigh scribbled it down on the board, “Correct! Your magic is how magic effects inanimate objects. Can some one tell me the others.”
Cecelia held her hand up, ” I know, Universe is one, and Reality.” He scribbled them down and Emily raised her voice, “Power…” Raleigh nodded and scribbled that one down as well. “As we know these are the basic five. The bases of all magic. Elias had noticed the list was not complete. “Hey teach, somethings up with that list. He turned to Elias, “What, did I misspell one?” Elias shook his head, “No your missing one, you forgot Time. The mans expression turned and a slight grin appeared on his face. Everyone looked confused, seems like some people don’t do their homework. Raleigh turned and wrote it on the board, “Right you are my young friend.” Cecilia turned to Elias, “Iv’e never heard of time being one of the Bases, I just assumed it was a myth.”
The man turned around clearly exited to explain. “Well the schools that teach magic have agreed that it is in fact a myth, are school doe’s not mention it in the studies unless asked by the students. You see it is cause of some debate, the majority says it does not exist while a very small number of believers do in fact believe in it’s existence, but there is very little proof. It is the magic that controls time, and such a power could be potentially… destructive. It is believed to mess with time it’self.”
After he explained what the others do he erased the board and wrote Complex underneath it and a diagram of how magic is affected by it’s base. “As you start to learn about complex Magic the more you know about how the bases work the more powerful your spells get. But only your true nature can break the boundary as you have already seen happen, the other bases will only reach a certain point but you can grow you nature to the limits of your own soul.” Every one nodded and scribbled down their notes, Elias just sat there staring out the window.
“Now, for a small demonstration,” Raleigh held out his hand and a bright light shown from his palm a second later a small creature flew out of his hand. It twisted and turned though the air and came to a stop and perched on the mans shoulder, “Everyone meet Creed!” Elias turned his attention to the creature, it was akin to a griffin but instead of an eagle and lion it had the head of a Raven and a back body of a panther. It’s feathers and fur were near obsidian colored. It was a majestic creature rivaling it’s cousin despite it’s small size which was slightly lager than a house cat.
“Life creation. If I can understand how an animal is supposed to act I can create it with my ability. Who can tell me what my base is. Emily raised hr hand quickly, “Reality, it’s just like mine, right?” He scratched the chin of the creature and it gave a ravens equivalent of a cats purr, “Yes, it allows me to change the reality of my own thought. It’s nearly the same as yours, but while you change your physical body I can turn my thoughts into being.” Creed took off again flying in circles until coming to a landing on the Emily’s desk and to the her surprise laid down on the shy girls books. Despite how Elias though she would react she rubbed the top of it’s head and it purred again.
“Each of you have such an abilities that let’s you capitalize on your own strengths. Each with it’s base and specialties. And a word of advise, the more you know about your base the more you can attune your skills to reach you own boundaries.” He scribbled the last words on the board. ‘Power = Understanding’.
A bell rang through the school signalling the lunch period. “OK, your dismissed to lunch. When you get back well begin battle lessons.”
