Office Diaries - Chapter 163
“Well, I’m not lying to you now,” Yanee countered with a pout.
“Are you sure?” her parents prompted again as they scrutinized her face.
This made Yanee torn between laughing and crying. Why wouldn’t they believe her? It was good that at this moment that Chummy returned with the drinks.
“I’m sure. If you want to, ask Chummy,” Yanee murmured, feeling a bit aggrieved that her parents didn’t believe her. But she knew it was her fault anyway.
At the mention of her name, Chummy chuckled. However, since she’s the great sidekick, she quickly pacified the elderly couple.
“Uncle, Auntie, don’t worry about Yanee at work. She’s actually doing very well. She not only got promoted, but she was also given a very important job right now,” Chummy said meaningfully.
The couple’s brows rose as they transferred their gaze from Chummy to Yanee.
“Mom, Dad, why do you look at me like that? Am I really not that trustworthy?” Yanee complained.
Of course, the couple shook their heads.
“No, no— of course, not. Dad and I are just surprised,” Mrs. Lee said in wonder before clapping her hands and then smiling. “But if that’s the case then it’s great.”
Yanee sighed. “Well, at the beginning, I really hated the idea of being at the literary department. I was even considering resigning from my work.”
At her confession, the smiles on the couple vanished again as they both looked worriedly at her.
“But?” Mr. Lee prompted, anxious to hear more.
“But just as Ami said, I’ve been working hard so in the end, I could work at Niji so why would I quit when I already kind of reached my goal just because I didn’t like the task that was given to me. The new company gave me an important job. Even if I didn’t like it at first, I couldn’t be choosy. Besides, not all people can have this opportunity that was handed out to me. Many people would kill to take over my job right now.”
Yanee told them about her conversation with Ami. Just as she expected, her parents calmed down when they found out that her elder sister already discussed it with her. She would normally feel aggrieved as, without her sister, her parents would have trouble believing she’s alright. But again, it’s her fault. She was the total opposite of Ami whose nose constantly breathed fire. Her timidity was her undoing. They knew that Ami wouldn’t let others bully her.
“Well, your sister’s right,” her dad commented as he nodded.
“Right! So I accepted this task as a challenge,” Yanee genuinely told them. “So you don’t have to worry about my job, okay? Since I started my project I actually realized it’s fun.”
“Fun?” Mrs. Lee quizzed and Yanee bobbed her head.
“Yes. I need to interview a lot of people for reference so I did a lot of traveling. All the people I interviewed and will interview are very interesting and I personally like them,”Yanee shared and she talked about the big sisters and their husbands.
“Wait— who?” Mr. Lee asked when Yanee mentioned the names of some of the big sisters.
“Did you say Jisoo Park? Yushin Park’s wife?” Mr. Lee asked and Yanee was a bit surprised because the one he remembered was the one from Korea and not Japan.
“Do you know them?”Yanee asked and realized that they were all big names in the business industry so her father must have known them and their husbands.
“Of course. She’s pretty popular in the circle. She’s supporting many orphanages and animal shelters in Asia. Your mother and I met her and her husband last year at a charity gala in Seoul,” Mr. Lee said thoughtfully before frowning.
“What’s wrong?”Yanee wondered why her father suddenly turned quiet.
“You said she’s one of your interviewees?” he asked and Yanee nodded. This made the old man and his wife exchange looks.
“Er… dad, is there something wrong with that?”Yanee was now curious about their reaction.
“Yes, uncle. Why did you suddenly ask?” Chummy was also eager to hear the reason.
“Ah, nothing. Your mom and I are just surprised that you managed to make an appointment with her. She’s not someone who likes the limelight and doesn’t really give interviews easily,” he said.
“Well, my project is not necessarily an interview about her. I was just tasked to talk about romance with her so I can use the information as a reference when I write my book,” Yanee said.
She already knew the fact that most of her interviewees were people who never really gave interviews except for Jason Tan who was a superstar. But she never really thought much about it since it had nothing to do with her project.
“Which made it more surprising,” Mr. Lee interjected. “Those people hate giving interviews much more talking about their personal life with a stranger for some book.”
Well… Yanee thought if they would put it that way, what her father said made sense. But she really never thought about it since everything’s already been arranged. It was unlike when she worked at the magazine and had to arrange interviews by herself.
“Well, my boss arranged the interviews so I didn’t have any problems,” Yanee told them. “All I had to do was set a schedule with them and do the interview. Well, I do have to fly over to where they are most times. But traveling is fun so I didn’t mind.”
“Oh? Arranged by your boss?” The couple looked amazed. “He must be someone amazing to be able to make those people say yes to the interview.”
“Yes! Our boss is amazing! He’s very handsome too!” Chummy chimed in with a giggle and Yanee side-eyed her, warning her to shut up.
She was not yet prepared to tell her parents about her new boyfriend right now. She was planning to tell them when Ami was here so she had someone really strong to back her up just in case.
“Really?”Mrs. Lee asked with curiosity. “Who did Niji send by the way? Your boss is originally from Niji, right? Which one is he?”
Urgh…
Oh well, Yanee couldn’t refuse to answer anyway.
“Tohru James,” she said, rendering her parents speechless.
