Office Diaries - Chapter 165
“He’s a nice guy. He’s very thoughtful.”
Mr. and Mrs. Lee exchanged looks of surprise, but the intensity of the worry in their eyes lessened. Instead, an obvious curiosity marred their faces now as they turned their attention back to their younger daughter. They refrained from speaking, however, and let their eyes do the talking that Yanee understood so well.
They were waiting for her to spill the beans— or so the saying went.
But, what to tell them? Yanee was at a loss. She didn’t want to tell them his name yet, as she wouldn’t be able to express herself well if they suddenly became excited— which she knew they would. Well, based on how they praised the potato earlier, she wouldn’t be surprised that they were low-key wishing for someone like him to be their son-in-law.
“Yanee, your phone’s vibrating,” Chummy suddenly said, but before she was able to answer, Mrs. Lee dismissed her.
“Just return the message or call later. Tell us more about your man first,” she said, and everybody knew there was nothing in the world that was more important to Yanee’s mom right now.
Urgh… She mentally apologized to whoever sent the message or call before humoring her parents.
“He’s very good at his job but he arranges his schedule to spend time with me,” she began and heard Chummy sniggering behind her so she turned to her again to give her a warning stare and she quickly wore a serious face— at least in front of her.
She knew her best friend snorted since Tohru did not only arrange his schedule for her, he did more than that. He bought the company for her, didn’t he?
“Oh, that sounds good,” her parents nodded in approval.
For them, someone who could give priority to their children was someone nice.
“Also, his family is very nice and down to earth,” Yanee suddenly said alarming her parents.
“What— wait! Did you already meet his family?
Well, this was somewhat Pandora’s Box. She knew her parents would think it unfair that she had already met his family when she just told them about his existence and they hadn’t even seen him yet. But Yanee had no choice but to mention this before telling them his identity.
“It’s just a coincidence. I went to Kyoto for work, right? I had to interview someone there for my project and met them there,” she explained, totally omitting the fact that she also had no idea at all that she would be meeting his family and that the person she had to interview was his sister.
“Is that so?” Mrs. Lee prompted, and when Yanee nodded, she frowned. “But how did his family know you? I mean did your boyfriend go with you? Was he in Kyoto as well?”
Yanee had a cold sweat as she laughed nervously. “Well, we actually met at work.”
“A coworker?”
Yanee smiled. This time, she noted apprehension in her mother’s voice. Well, it’s understandable since the ex who gave her bad memories was a coworker.
“We’re coworkers now but we weren’t when we first met,” Yanee answered.
Her mind raced. She knew that the moment had come. She had to tell them his name now.
“Oh? Is he one of the people Niji sent over to Clover?” her father asked and Yanee nodded.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee didn’t look so worried now. It must be because they had good opinions on people from Niji. Normally, if it was someone the headquarters sent to a small, insignificant branch, this would mean a demotion, either because of incompetence or something else.
“You’re not going to worry if he’s someone Niji threw away to fester in a small branch?” she prompted with a teasing voice and her parents laughed.
“Well, naturally, under normal circumstances, it’s what would people think. But Niji worked differently. It’s under Arcus Iris International. People who work there undergo difficult ȧssessments monthly and if someone performs poorly, he doesn’t get transferred. He gets fired, no questions asked,” Mr. Lee explained. “Also, Niji sent Tohru James there to rehabilitate the dying department. Do you think people who came with Tohru James are incompetent? It should only be the opposite.”
“Oh, Mama, look. Our baby girl looks so proud. Are you going to brag about your boyfriend now?” Mr. Lee said teasingly and Yanee had to cover her face.
“Papa, stop teasing her. Let her continue! I want to know more about this mysterious guy. If you weren’t coworkers before, where did you meet?”
Yanee cleared her throat. Well, after everything that’s been said, she thought it’s already alright to tell them.
“We actually met during my last project.”
“The interview you did for the magazine? The one with the most eligible bachelors in Japan?” Mrs. Lee asked and Yanee nodded.
Her mother looked thoughtful for a while and then she suddenly looked enlightened. “I remember, you interviewed Tohru James then too! Did you meet your guy when you went to Niji to interview the boss?”
Er…
“Yes, we met around that time,”Yanee said.
“So, you told us about him except his name,” Mr. Lee then quipped and Yanee laughed.
“Don’t be shocked, okay?” she asked, and the others nodded.
She opened her mouth and was about to tell them his name when the doorbell suddenly rang and they all froze.
“Ah, who could it be at this hour?” Mrs. Lee asked and Yanee motioned for Chummy to open the door.
“Are you expecting someone?” Mr. Lee asked while they waited for Chummy to return and Yanee shook her head, and then she remembered her phone, the one she was not able to answer earlier.
She quickly picked it up and opened it to see several missed calls and a message from the potato.
[BOSS: Anjee is here. She surprised us with a visit here at the office. We’re coming to your place to see you and if you’re free, maybe you can do a short interview.]
“EEEEEEEEEH?” Yanee was shocked.
“What happened?” her parents asked suddenly.
“My Boss is here,” she announced just as a giggling Chummy returned to the living room with two people in tow.
“Good evening,” Tohru’s soft baritone echoed in the room and Yanee watched as her parents sprang from their seats and looked at Tohru James in awe and she palmed her face.
