One Good Betrayal Deserves Another - Chapter 14:Turning the Tables
“So where do I sign?” An over-eager Jonathan Hunter said as he grabbed the pen from the attorney.
“Over here and-here-” David Barrett flipped the page, “Janice you can sign as a witness..that’s it. It’s now official John,” he said with a knowing smile.
“Does that mean it’s all mine??” Jonathan’s beady eyes gleamed with greed. He rubbed his hands in anticipation, and Janice danced around, unable to contain her excitement. She had regretted marrying Jonathan but at this very moment, she patted herself on the back. This was the best decision she had made since forever.
“Yes, Dad it’s all yours,” Ethan strolled into the office casually, looking like a billion bucks, in a grey slim-fit designer suit and his hair slicked back. His gold and diamond cuff-links blinked in the sunlight as he walked to the desk and sat on the leather chair, with one elegant leg over the other.
“Eth-Ethan, what are you doing here?” he stood up, taken aback.
“Nice to see you to father,” Ethan said dryly as he bobbed his leg, “Janice, it’s always a pleasure,” he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
“You’re supposed to be dead..there’s no way..you’re not real…he’s not real,” Janice backed away, fear written all over her face. She knew Ethan Hunter was not one to be messed with. Ethan was merciless. If you were dumb enough or brave enough to cross him, then you would have to make sure he didn’t survive to tell the tale, otherwise…
“So, let’s take this from the top, shall we? Who’s bright idea was it this time?” Ethan looked at his father and Janice, waiting for a response.
“It was Jonathan-he-he even paid me to marry you-it’s always been him,” Janice rattled, trying to save her own skin.
“Son, listen-I’m your father…I was just going along with her plan..she’s the one that suggested we make it look like an accident…I admit I may have paid her to marry you but this was all her,”
“Tell me something I don’t know,” Ethan said humorlessly, “I knew that, that’s why I made you sign a prenup. But this time you went too far!” He stood and banged his hand on the wooden desk, “You were prepared to kill an innocent woman-that had nothing to do with this! For that, you will have to pay.”
“You don’t even know her, why are you so concerned about a nobody?” Janice spat, but her luck had run out the door, for good this time.
“Nobody huh? You are going to find out just how worthless she is..” Ethan strode to the door and held it open for Cassie.
“Hi babe,” she kissed him soundly, “that went better than expected.”
“We aim to please sweetheart,” he smiled at her, then turned to Janice with a scowl, “You see Janice you’re wrong-this woman right here holds all the power.”
“You should be dead along with him!” Janice screamed as she lunged herself on Cassie.
“Sorry but you will have to get through me first,” Ethan stepped in between before she could attack. He pushed her away with a look of disgust. “Touch her again..I dare you,” he challenged.
“You hardly know her and you’re already in love with her-I can tell by the way you look at her,” Janice snapped, “I should have killed her-I should have killed you both!”
“Yes Mr. Hunter, are you going to press charges?” Detective stone asked.
“It’s entirely up to Miss Winters.” All eyes turned to Cassie.
“Ethan don’t…he’s your father..” Cassie held his hands and pleaded with him.
“He was merely a sperm donor, not my father. He’s never been a father to me and he never will be.” Ethan turned away from Cassie’s pleading eyes, “Take them out of my sight Detective. Lock them up and throw away the key-I couldn’t care less really,”
“Ethan-son-think about this-don’t be so rash son,” Jonathan knew that his son was serious, “What would your mother say if-”
“Don’t you dare drag my mother into this! I know that you were behind her accident. I will never forgive you for taking her away from me! and all for money!! You disgust me-I’m no son of yours, you’re dead to me.” Ethan stormed out of the room without so much as a backward glance.
“What’s it going to be Miss Winters?” Detective Stone asked again.
“You heard the man detective-lock them up and throw away the key,” Cassie said with finality.
Janice started to hyperventilate as the police officer read their rights while handcuffing them. Cassie went after Ethan, he must be in a bad state. It couldn’t be easy having a father that wanted you dead and then to find that he killed your mother. That had to be a hard blow, even for the coldest of hearts.
Cassie ran out of the building and saw Ethan hurry off to his car. She ran after him, her heels clicking against the pavement. He heard her calling out to him and he stopped and turned to face her.
“Cassie..I’m sorry for just leaving like that but-”
“Hey..there’s no need to apologize okay?” Cassie said out of breath, “Sorry, just give me a minute to catch my breath,” she leaned against his Mercedes.
“Take all the time you need sweetheart,” he laughed as he gathered her in his arms.
“I think it’s time I joined you for the morning workout,” she joked.
“Let’s get out of here,” he held the door open for her, “I think our job is done.”
“Yes it sure is,” she said grimly as she fastened her seat belt, “are you okay babe?” she looked at him with concern.
“Honestly? No-but I will be. Don’t worry about it okay?” Ethan started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.
“So do we move on to phase 2?” Cassie asked.
“Sweetheart are you sure you okay with this?” Ethan’s hand tightened on the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. He was having second thoughts about the second part of their plan. It made him uncomfortable but it had to be done, there was no other way.
“Babe, I need you to trust me-I can do this okay?”
“I do trust you, my love, it’s him that-” Ethan placed his hand on her thigh.
“Baby..can you let me do this? Please? You’ve already done your part so allow me to do mine?” Cassie lifted his hand and pressed her lips in his palm.
“Okay,” he sighed heavily, “but I will step in if I feel you can’t handle it..deal?”
“Deal,” she nodded.
She just hoped she could pull it off.
