Overlord: Blue Citadel Alternate - Chapter 32 『InControl』
Vertum strode from the house belonging to Enri, having exited from the front door and made his way to the center of the village. When he finally arrived, he noticed he had already taken the attention of those villagers who already noticed his presence.
A small smile took hold of his lips, his eyes tracing over those who were curiously looking over to him as he was standing there waiting. His hands rested at his sides, dangling freely.
Latimon, the residential ranger, made his grand appearance jogging over to the man.
“Jack-sama… May I ask how the wall is going?”
“The process of building the wall is going smoothly,” he responded with a light chuckle, his head cocking to the side. Vertum would lightly flicker his eyes around the ranger. “Would you be able to help Enri gather the people? I have an announcement.”
Blinking a few times at the simple request, the Ranger nodded lightly. “Of course,” turning away from the man the ranger began calling people over. Walking around, casually talking with the other residence.
Vertum smiled lightly, even though being called Jack didn’t bother him when called it by the people of the village, he was soon going to change it. His eyes traced over the faces, until they narrowed on Enri.
The blonde girl with fair skin, made her way towards Vertum with a smile across her face. People were following behind her, as both she and the ranger lead people to the center.
Within minutes almost all of the members of the Village were here, including the Kobold summons, which were under Enri’s command.
“What is it?” The crowd would murmur, hoping it wasn’t another attack coming their way. He had wiped out the last wave of fighters, the last thing they needed was another attack and death before the walls could be put up.
Enri dressed in the blue and white outfit he had given her yesterday, walked up to Vertum and stood beside him, before turning to face him directly. “I’ve brought them,” her upper lip lightly overlapped the lower.
“Thank you…” He reached forward and took her hand from her side, lightly pecking it, before letting her hold it to her chest as she retracted it from his grasp.
Her face had actually turned red as he had kissed her hand in front of everyone, definitely not used to any form of such etiquette towards her. “O-of course,” she said nervously, though her eyes were determined, as she sighed to keep herself calm.
Enri then shifted herself to face the crowd, patting out the sides of her dress. Everyone’s eyes were on her. Some of the children present were giggling and playing within the crowd, hardly paying the adults any mind.
Some people had smiles on their faces, others frowns. Some of them, especially the farmers, seemed impatient as they needed to get back to their craft.
Vertum waited until everyone was silently waiting and watching. “Thank you all for cooperating and coming to the center of the village.” He held out his arms out with a wide girth. “I am here to announce that the Wall will be completed in the following weeks. For the time being, patrols will be on high alert, and the village will be protected by any means necessary.”
The reassurances that came out of his mouth, weren’t necessarily lies. They were just stating the obvious. This village was going to be the start of what he was going to build and experience in this world. It was his personal project.
As the people were beginning to smile, and some of them grumbling that it was a waste of time to be taken from their work, he snapped his finger.
Those who wanted to walk away, immediately looked over at him. Their attention on the dragon, not wanting to upset their protector and definitely not wanting to become prey.
It was hard to trust someone who could eat you. Though it was also pretty hard to trust most humans once you’ve been betrayed or neglected at least once.
That’s when he used silent magic to cast the spell『Mass Control Amnesia』, causing a green wave of light to course over everyone within the village center, including Enri.
People stopped moving for that brief moment. Bits and pieces of their memories were being overwritten or changed. His name was now known as Vertum, no longer Jack Graham, to them. The Re-Estize Kingdom was no longer their sovereign Country, but the Vilisyrterian Empire was.
He was laying claim in their minds and of their land. He was laying the foundation of his Empire with these villagers. Though they there were likely under one hundred people, there were plenty, a Kingdom only needed a few to start.
As the spell came to a close, the faint glow that emitted from everyone dimmed and they all found themselves blinking at one another. Not knowing what had just happened.
“What just happened?” Enri had no idea what had just transpired, as none of them were to remember his alteration of their memories.
Vertum looked towards Enri with a light smile across his lips, he reached out, wrapping his arm around her waist. “Not sure,” he teased suspiciously which caused her to narrow her eyes on him. Though she seemed to quickly dismiss it, trusting in him, that he didn’t do wrong.
Shaking her head, she seemed to smile a bit.

That was when Nemu smashed into Vertum’s side, her arms wrapped around him. “What was that big green wave!?” She laughed as she looked up at him, her rounded chin pressed into his hip. “It was so cooooool~!”
Blinking and looking down at the little girl, he raised a brow. “It was a blessing,” he placed a hand on the top of her head, ruffling her hair. She was so adorable.
“A blessing?”
“Against evil spirits,” Vertum sniggered as she was taking this as truth.
“Oooo Really~? Hehehe…” Nemu’s fingers curled into the fabric of his pants as she smiled big.
Vertum had no problem lying to the child. Seeing the smile seemed to justify it, and even without it, he cared not. He continued to play with her head of hair.
It felt strange having two women in his arms, well, one woman and a girl. Vertum’s eyes gazed down at the child who he was petting the head of. She seemed happy with his attentions.
In his previous world he saw children as nothing but monsters, but that was because he didn’t see them as innocent. To him they were just as calculating and conniving as any matured human being. There was no such thing as innocence, only ignorance and undisciplined behavior.
As the crowd dispersed as there was no further talk, the farmers and villagers went back to what they were doing. The Ranger from before and the Kobolds also returned to what they were doing.
The team of monsters summoned by Enri were making their rounds about the inner perimeter of the Village. They were strong beings, so they could hold their own even if they were attacked by a small group of people.
Though the only problem they’d come across would be if there was a strong Adamantite Party to attack them. The likeliness of this happening at this stage however, was very low.
Vertum lead the girls back towards the house.
Nemu was the first to enter, holding the door open for the duo. “Come on, Vertum-sama! My arm is getting tired!”
After he entered, he would end up sitting in a chair within their common room. His eyes gazed along the floor, paneled in wood. They then traced over the fireplace, the wood stove. People from his time would see this as vintage and ancient. The very cost of these items would be unbelievable. Yet in this time, it was just above the bare minimum, they were well off.
Though he couldn’t say the same for the size of the home though. While there were multiple rooms, they were small. The size was smaller than a two person condo.
This place wasn’t run down and it wasn’t necessarily in poverty. At least that is what the architecture shared with him.
According to what he remembered from books pertaining to medieval times, most villages had dirt floors on the first floor of any home, and the walls were made of stone. It was the secondary floor in which had wood panelling as a floor, if it even had a second floor.
Though as he was seated in Enri’s home, he could see the rafters. It was only a single story home. He hoped when the wall was completed, that they’d begin to build better homes. Increasing the quality of life was something he wanted to do as he expended Vilisyrteria into the Village.
When that happens, he planned on assimilating the village into Vilisyrteria itself, forgoing the name of Carne. Though he was also thinking of naming the village Carnewall instead, while keeping the two places separate entities.
He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, but he knew he’d make up his mind soon enough.
Nemu left the house again as some of her friends, fellow children of the village, came along to play. Enri and Vertum could hear their giggles as they ran around the village.
Enri turned her attention to Vertum now though, smiling. Her chest pounding as she could recall what he wanted from her, what she had promised him for today. Was he aiming to collect?
She folded her hands in front of her, watching him as he did the same.
Glancing up from his thoughts, Vertum rested his eyes on the girl before lightly gesturing his hand to his lap. “Would you come take a seat?” His eyes seemed soft, “Please,” but then his voice became stern, the question had been rhetorical.
