Part Wolf - Chapter 126 Chapter 125
“…so mean…” Agatha moaned.
Elize raised her brows in confusion. Who was she talking about? She thought cluelessly. She leaned closer to her friend, hoping to hear more.
“…bad elf..” The witch said, pouting her lips in irritation.
Elf? A bad elf? Only one person came to her mind at the time- a perfectly blonde elf with purple eyes who had splashed wine on her dress the other day. Was Agatha still thinking about that? Elize felt touched, thinking that her friend was holding grudges against other people for her. If this wasn’t loyalty then what else could be? She thought to herse;f with a smug smile. Careful not to wake the witch, Elize quietly slid off the bed, walking towards the curtained balcony.
Early morning rays penetrated the glass door, moving through the flimsy white curtains to pool beside the tea-table. Elize stealthily opened the glass doors to the balcony and breathed in the fresh air. It smelled like wet earth and flowers. She sighed happily, a smile forming at the corners of her lips. She could smell each and every single plant from the garden outside the hostel. It was indeed a fulfilling thing to be a werewolf. Even her footsteps were lighter and her pace was a hundred times faster- not to mention the superhuman strength that she had acquired.
Turning around, she stood on her toes, stretching her body like a cat. That was when something caught her attention. She bit her lower lip, assessing what to do about the items on the table. Finally, after much contemplation, she walked towards the tea- table and bent down to retrieve a rolled out sheet of paper that was tied in the middle with a red satin ribbon. She pulled at the one end of the ribbon, unraveling the paper. As the paper opened up, another smaller sheet fell down from inside it. Elize caught it before it hit the ground. The first paper was a title deed to a house. The second one on the other hand was a letter- written in familiar handwriting. She gasped in surprise as she saw the signature at the bottom of the letter. With wide eyes, she started reading its contents.
Dear Elize,
Yours,
Anna.
There was a wide smile on her face as she picked up the small necklace from the tea-table. She had kept it there a few days ago, along with the letter. Thinking that it was from Aileen, she didn’t want to even open it at first. But thankfully curiosity had gotten the better of her. If she hadn’t read it, then she would have missed her great grandmother’s last words to her. She sighed happily, looking at the small piece of jewelry in her hand. The thin gold chain and the diamond pendant now held a different place in her heart. Anna must have prepared it all in advance for her eighteenth birthday.
Tears welled in her eyes as she remembered the woman she had so cheerfully called nana all her childhood. When she passed away, Elize was only ten years old. Anna’s funeral service was the last time that she had stepped foot on the Island until the day that she had received the invitation. The very next year after Anna’s death, her mother had passed away too in an accident that she still can’t make herself forget. And soon after, her life had turned upside down. It was evident that no one had suspected her to turn out to be a witch. Especially not her mother on that day.
Judging from the way that Anna addressed her in the letter that now lay on the table, she guessed that even she didn’t know. That would only mean one thing- her father had lied to his mother about his family background. She gritted her teeth, remembering the way that he had screamed at her after coming back from the hospital. He had woken her up from sleep and accused her of murder. The eleven-year-old child was scared beyond her wits to respond to that. She remembered getting slapped again and again and Alex crying and begging his dad to stop.
That night was the first time that her magic had manifested. Shocking both Alex and her father, magic had flown out of her body uncontrollably. Her grandmother had come running to the room wide-eyed. The old woman’s screams echoed through the house, shadowing Alex’s desperate attempts at asking her to stop. But before it got out of control, she had fallen back on her bed, tired to the core. At that time, she had no idea what had happened to her. Her father had immediately left the room, followed by a disturbed older woman. Alex was the only one who had kept her company that night, staying in the bed with her, while holding her close to his chest. For some reason, Alex hadn’t seemed to be scared of her. To this day, she remembered the warm feeling in her heart, lying in his arms.
Elize suddenly missed her brother. She wondered how he was doing and whether he too was thinking of her. She twisted the necklace in her hand, distracted. Suddenly, she stopped, scrunching her face in confusion. She looked down at the chain suspiciously. Anna hadn’t mentioned anything about a chain in the letter. Where did this come from then? She thought, narrowing her eyes at the piece of jewelry. She remembered how the two items were delivered to her. It was definitely an enchanted box whose key was her blood. As far as she knew, Anna didn’t possess any magical items. The only other possibility being, a certain head witch.
She looked closely at the piece of jewelry, turning it and twisting it to see if she could spot any clue leading to its owner.
“Elize?” Agatha’s sleepy voice came from the bed, distracting her.
Elize looked up, distracted. “You’re awake.” She said with a slight smile on her face.
“Mhmmm,” Agatha replied, sliding off from the bed lazily. “What’s that you’re holding?” She asked, noticing the necklace in her hand.
Elize looked at the piece of jewelry in her hand with a sigh.
“I don’t know.” She said, frowning.
She extended the chain towards her friend, all the while keeping her eyes on it. Something about this particular item seemed very off. But she couldn’t pin the exact problem. The pendant caught the sun’s rays and sparkled beautifully. Suddenly Agatha gasped, quickly snatching it away from her.
“Where did you get this from?!” She asked, looking shocked.
Elize looked raised her brows at her friend. “It was a gift I guess. Why?”
“A gift?! Elize do you even know this is?!” The witch exclaimed.
“What?”
“A destiny stone! It’s a destiny stone Elize! Do you ever listen to Runebreaker’s classes?”
Elize shrugged. “What is it?”
“Only two such stones exist on the earth.” Agatha started explaining with a sigh, “It is said that the day you meet your fated partner the stone will shine a bright blue and when you meet the one with whom you have an ill-fated future, the stone will turn black.”
